ISSMGE TC209 Jack-up leg penetration prediction event

CASE 3

1. INTRODUCTION

The ISSMGE (www.issmge.org) is the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of
Engineers, Academics and Contractors all over the world that actively participate in geotechnical engineering.
As a truly global organisation, for the ISSMGE to provide a focus for professional leadership to more than 80
Member Societies and over 18,000 individual members.

TC 209 is the technical committee for Offshore Geotechnics. The committee is organizing an international jack-
up leg penetration prediction event. Results of the predictions will be presented anonymously in a paper at the
ISFOG 2015 conference and compared with actual measured spudcan penetrations.

Case 3 concerns a jack-up rig installed in the North Sea.

2. JACK-UP RIG DETAILS

Maximum load / Preload 3,800 tonnes

Spudcan details Rectangular footing: dimensions 7.7 m x 8.3 m

3. SOIL INVESTIGATION

The available soil investigation data is presented on the next pages and consists of continuous CPT plots.
The soil investigation contractor has recommended an Nkt factor of 20 based on the laboratory testing
performed onshore.
No physical samples have been collected at this particular location however it has been noted in the borehole
logs from nearby locations that the clay is heavily fissured.

4. PREDICTIONS

Please provide following prediction details:

- Case number (i.e. Case 3)
- Parameter value selection for all soil parameters used (numerical/tabulated values and graph)
- Methods and software used to make predictions
- Spudcan penetration curve versus depth (numerical/tabulated values and graph)
- Considered foundation risk
- Expected final penetration depth
- Other hazards and/or recommendations

5. SUBMISSION OF PREDICTIONS

Please submit your predictions by 15 August 2014 by e-mail to following address: tc209@issmge.org
