CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Furniture can be defined as fundamental equipment that makes places such as house
suitable for living. With the presence of furniture, people's lives become easier and more
comfortable [1]. Furniture is grouped accordingly with their functions such as tables or desks
for work and dining, cabinets or cases for storage and chairs or sofas for resting. Every single
piece of furniture with different functions is installed into a house, so as to ease the daily life
and also to make the house becomes more organized.
However, house pricing are increasing over the years [2]. Houses such as apartment
and compact houses become popular. Unfortunately, the primal concern of these houses is the
space available is limited. An issue arise when an individual starting to fill the house with
furniture, as more furniture is being installed, the space in house become lesser. Therefore, it
is important to remove unnecessary furniture and to find the right one to make the house look
more spacious. Space saving furniture is one of the options to solve this problem.
Space saving furniture is transformable furniture that uses less space and provides at
least two types of functions. An example of a space saving furniture is a sofa bed; it can turn
the sofa into a bed when needed, especially when there is a guest coming and staying at home
overnight [3]. Other examples of space saving furniture are foldable table and chair which
can be kept easily when not in use and bookshelves which transform into beds. Bunk beds are
good in small house; it uses the technique to make the furniture more vertical. This
technically takes up the same amount of space; however, it saves the space on the floor.
In a house, an individual usually do this his or her work in the living room or bedroom.
For a working space, table and chair are the must have furniture with an additional cabinet.
However, it is quite space consuming to put all these together in a room. The idea of the
project is a sofa combining with other furniture and serves various functions. It helps in
reducing number of furniture in house and makes the house look more spacious. Besides, the
sofa will help in improving ergonomics on working.

1.2 Problem statements
After a few research into smart furniture for space saving design, we are found some
problem statement:
1.3 Objectives
1. To develop a space saving furniture by combining several types of furniture such as table,
book shelf and cabinet into one multifunctional study sofa.
2. To identify ergonomics issues in multifunctional study sofa.
3. To improve the study quality of user.

Based on the figure 2.10, most of the respondents are able to study for at least half an
hour without leaving the study area, with 37 of them able and 13 of them unable to do so.
For the figure 2.11, it is an additional question to the respondents who answer No in
the first chart. Most of the respondents, 8 of them leave the study area because their study
supplies such as laptop and stationary are distant away from the study area. There are 4 of
them give the reason that the table is cluttered. 3 respondents claim that they leave the study
area because the chair is stiff and similarly there are also 3 respondents claim that the
room/study area is crowded. There is 1 respondent prefer other option than the given.
This question supposed to have a total of 13 respondents only, however, there are 19
responses received. There is a possible reason to this situation, which is maybe some of the
respondents does not read the question thoroughly before answering it.From the analysis,
most of the respondents does not leave the study area or get distracted during their study. For
those who leave the study area, the main reason is that the study supplies are distant away
from study area. Hence, the study sofa should be designed to help the users in storing their
study supplies.

2.2.4 Section Four
Based on the figure 2.13, both the fabric and leather are the most popular material
among the others and prefer to be used as surface material of sofa, both with 24 respondents
choose them respectively. For the material plastic, it received only 1 response from the
respondents while the material hardwood received zero attention from the respondents. There
is 1 respondent prefer other option than the given. From the analysis, fabric and leather
capture the most attention from the respondents. Hence, the surface of the study sofa should
be made in fabric in term of cost effectiveness.
11

per week is less than 15 hours. Majority of them is able to study for at least half an hour
without leaving the study area. Minority of them leave the study area as they need to go and
forth to take study supplies which is distant away from them. Besides that, respondents most
likely to replace the chair in study area with a comfy one and to install a bookshelf to keep
books or documents orderly.
For section four, respondent opt for either fabric or leather as the surface material for
sofa. Regarding the questions on study sofa, respondents feel that study area is a must in their
house. They also agree that comfort is important during study time and having a
13
multifunction sofa can help in study. Respondent want reclining mechanism sofa which can
be extended for resting. Respondent claim that the chair in study area should be replaced with
a sofa and retractable table should be used as it is easier to keep when not in used. Extension
furniture such as cabinet and bookshelf is important as it can help to keep the study area clean
and organized. Long usability period and great aesthetic value of sofa is important in the eyes
of respondents.
For section five, the price for most respondents would prefer to pay for the sofa is
between RM1000 until RM1200. From market survey, it seems respondents prefer to
