Paragraph organizer
Lined paper
Pencils
6. LESSON COMPONENTS:

a. INTRODUCTION/ READINESS
Tell students that we will be using our Ralph S. Mouse book, and the characters in it to compare
and contrast ourselves to them.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION (I DO)

1. Ask students what words we use when we are comparing and contrasting? (Like,
different, same, similar)
2. Then ask them what characters are in Ralph S. Mouse? (Ralph, Ryan, Brad, Matt, Mrs.
K)
3. Tell them that as the teacher, you would compare yourself to Mrs. K. That you are both
teachers, but she teaches in Cucaracha and you teach in Belen. That she is married and
you are not. Were also the same in that we both like to give our students projects. We are
also different because she wants to have a class pet, and you wouldnt want to.

GUIDED PRACTICE (WE DO)

4. Then have each student pick what character they will compare and contrast themselves
to.
5. Then pass out the Venn diagram handout to each student. Tell them they should try to
think of 4 things for each of their sections of the Venn diagram.
6. Walk around the room and offer help we needed. Help students in thinking of ways that
they can compare and contrast themselves to their character.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (YOU DO)

7. Once the students have completed the Venn Diagram, have them complete the graphic
organizer. Where 1 paragraph should be comparing and 1 paragraph contrasting. The
students will use what they wrote in the Venn diagram.
8. Then have students take what they wrote in their graphic organizer and write on their
lines paper. Remind them to indent, use their best try at spelling, capitals, punctuation,
and clear handwriting.

b. CLOSURE
9. Students will share what they wrote with a partner. Students should tell their partner one
thing they heard that relates to themselves as well.

c. ASSESSMENT
The students will be assessed on their completion of their Venn diagram. They should have 4
things for each section, send should have taken details directly from the text. The students will
also be assessed on their graphic organizer and final draft. They should include 2-3 similarities
and difference that they have with their chosen character.

ADAPTATIONS FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS AND STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL

NEEDS
Adoptions for English learners and students with special needs will be partner work or the
teacher working one on one with those who need extra support. Partner work can be used for
creating the Venn diagram during the we do. The teacher working one on one can be used in
completing the graphic organizer as well as thru final draft on lined paper.
