Eggs are hatching throughout Moorabool

Shire - not only on the farm, but also in the
library!
A live hatching was held at the Lerderderg
Library in Bacchus Marsh from Tuesday
April 4, with the final chick emerging on
Friday (April 7).
Staff member, Sam said the live hatching
was part of a school holiday project,
which allowed children to view the chicks
hatching from their eggs during the first
week, and meet them and learn about
them during the second week.
The chicks were kept inside a brooder box
complete with a heat light, bedding, feed
and a waterer.
The school holiday project aims to teach
children more about life cycle, as they visit
the journey from the egg to the chicken.

man who stole from a local
CFA and performed danger-
ous burn-outs on the main
street has been released back
into the community.
Max Dennison appeared in
the Bacchus Marsh Magis-
trates Court on Friday (April
7), where he pleaded guilty
to a number of offences in-
cluding careless driving of
a motor vehicle, burglary,
assault with a weapon and
reckless conduct endanger
life.
The 20-year-old unlicensed
driver crashed a motorbike
in the main street of Bacchus
Marsh after attempting to do
a burn out at around 6:15pm
on January 31.
At the time of the incident,
Dennison was on bail for
various driving offences,
assault with a baseball bat
and the theft of a $500 chain-
saw from the Parwan Fire
Station.
The accused, who was sup-
ported by his family and
friends in court, was denied
bail in February and had
since spent 50-days in cus-
tody an experience he re-
ferred to as not great.

every intention of abiding by

She said Dennison had sold
his car at the end of 2016 and
was no longer in possession
of the motorbike used to do
burn-outs earlier this year.
Magistrate Gregory Rob-
inson jailed the accused for
50 days, with the time spent
on remand counted as time
served.
Dennison was also placed
on a 24-month community
corrections order and fined
$1,500.
His drivers license was
cancelled for a period of
12-months.
Magistrate Robinson said
if it wasnt for the accuseds
guilty plea, he would have
sentenced him to at least
two years in custody.

in jail.

million dollar company Hanson Quarries.
Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell raised the matter
at the April 12 Development Assessment Committee DAC)
meeting, saying that he had read about issues between
Hanson and council in the media but had not received a
single word on it from council itself.
The Moorabool News reported last month that Hanson
was negotiating with council about extending a permit for
a Coimadai mine that it already had but which had expired.
It appears though, that negotiations failed.
We have had discussions with Hanson Quarries, is their
permit valid or not. We made an assessment that their
permit is not valid, we werent convinced on the information
provided. It will be heard between them and ourselves at
VCAT on 10 May, a council officer told the meeting, after Cr
Tatchell raised the question.
Cr Tatchell told the meeting that he was frustrated at reading
about the issue in the paper, saying councillors were well
overdue for an update.
It seems that the officers were managing it, and I use that
term pretty loosely, the fact that you have to bring these
things up at a DAC meeting is really disappointing, Cr
Tatchell said.
My understanding is this has been going on for five
months... and not even a briefing note for councillors. I
understand there are sometimes sensitive negotiations
between planning and industry, but generally you dont read
about it in the newspaper.
He said the issue could have been brought up in confidential
business at a regular council meeting.
The fact that its gone to VCAT means a decision has been
made that industrys not happy with, and thats my concern.
Weve got a multinational having a blue at VCAT with
council and the councillors dont know anything about
it?
A council officer told the meeting that a report will be
brought before the May council meeting, and that a briefing
note will be sent to councillors.
Hanson Quarries declined to comment for the story.

Quotes are being sought for the pur-
chase and removal of buildings and
other infrastructure at the old Lerder-
derg Childrens Centre site.
Councillors voted at the April 5 meet-
ing to declare the site surplus to council
needs, as the Darley Early Learning
Centre is now up and running.
The 6200sqm site is located on the cor-
ner of Albert and Nelson Streets, Dar-
ley, and has served as a Kindergarten,
Maternal & Child Health Centre, Coun-
cil Early Years office and Occasional
Care service for the past 16 years.
The portable buildings were moved to
the existing site in 1999 after being pur-
chased from the City of Moonee Valley
to act as temporary and portable facili-
ties for a kindergarten service in Darley
in 1999.
But a council report on the site found
that it lacks private meeting space as
well as disability accessibility, with the
report stating that to bring the site up
to compliance with disability access
requirements would cost over $70,000.
It is proposed that it would be more
financially sustainable to dispose of the
Lerderderg Childrens Centre build-
ings and other assets (storage sheds
and play equipment), read another
report prepared by council officers.
The report recommended that the
site be declared surplus, noting that
it could be used by the neighbouring
Darley Primary School but that other
interest is also around.
The Bacchus Marsh Christian Church
has written to the Council expressing
interest in leasing or buying the former
Lerderderg Childrens Centre to run
programs such as a Youth Centre; Play
Group; Foodbank; Return to Work for
Mums and English skills for migrants
in an OpportunityShop and Caf envi-
ronment, the report stated.
It is proposed that the expression of
interest from the Bacchus Marsh Chris-
tian Church be considered after the
conclusion of the invitation to quote
process and in determining the future
use of the site.
A further report will be presented to
council after the invitation to quote
process has been completed.

A paper road is a term used for a road that is not on any
official register of roads usually track-style built by farmers
for access reasons, and not constructed to any standard.
Council is not responsible for maintenance of paper roads
however the issue arose at the February council meeting,
when a request was made for maintenance on a paper road
and subsequently refused unless users first paid to have the
road constructed to the proper standard for council to then
maintain.
The request for maintenance of paper roads has recently
become a topical issue as there are a number of properties
being sold which abut these Paper Roads that do not re-
quire a Planning Permit as the lots have individual titles and
as a result, houses are being constructed without access to a
public road, read a report prepared by council officers and
tabled at the April 5 council meeting.
The draft Maintenance of Unmade Paper Roads Policy
proposes a number of criteria that would be required to be
satisfied in order for Council to assume the management and
maintenance of a paper road.
These criteria address the financial, environmental, and
social impacts of upgrading and maintaining such roads,
reads the report.
The draft policy is now available for viewing through the
regular council channels.

Plea change considered

One of the alleged killers of Spring-
bank war veteran Ken Handford will
this week find out if he can change his
guilty plea.
Adam Lucas Williamson appeared in
the Supreme Court of Victoria on Mon-
day (April 10).
The 40-year-old initially pleaded
guilty to murdering Mr Handford on
the eve of his 90th birthday, however in
unusual circumstances, his defence has
argued that he should not be facing a
3a murder charge as he was not in the
room when Mr Handford was stabbed
13 times.
Section 3a involves unintentionally
killing during a crime of violence.
An interim suppression order, made
by Justice Jane Dixon, has limited The

the matters heard on April 10; however,
in December last year, Williamsons
former lawyer, Richard Edney, argued
that Williamson was unaware that the
co-accused had a knife and was not
complicit with it being brandished.
Williamson and the co-accused alleg-
edly kicked open the back door of Mr
Handfords Springbank home in the
early hours of September 14, 2015.
Mr Handford was tied with his hands
behind his back before being stabbed
with a double-edged knife and being
left to die more than four hours later.
The two accused left the property with
$3900 in cash, jewellery and a collection
of Mr Handfords WWII medals.
Justice Dixon adjourned the matter in
order to consider the change of plea,

Two expressions of interest have so far

been received in the process to lease
gym facilities at the Bacchus Marsh
Leisure Centre.
The leasing of the facility was decided
on when councillors opted to not renew
the contract with Belgravia Leisure to
provide services at the centre, and in-
stead have council manage it.
The item was discussed at the April 5
council meeting, however no further
details have emerged.
Gym member Kathy addressed the

A 24-year-old woman found in possession
of stolen goods, methamphetamine and
cartridge ammunition has been condemned
by a Bacchus Marsh magistrate.
Jessie Oakley appeared in court on Friday
April 7.
Bacchus Marsh police executed a search
warrant at a property in Peelmans Lane at
around 8:30pm on December 21 last year, the
court heard.
The mother-of-two was found in
possession of two ziplock bags containing
methamphetamine and diazepam tablets,
cartridge ammunition and ladies underwear

questioned by police following a pursuit that
occurred on February 25.
The court heard that police attempted to
intercept a vehicle after it was observed
speeding at 110km/h on Flanagans Drive in
Bacchus Marsh.

She said the relationship, which had
now ended, was marked with drugs and
violence, however Oakley had since begun
rehabilitation in an attempt to turn her life
around.
Magistrate Gregory Robinson said it was
unfortunate that Oakley had entered into a
life of crime and drugs at such a young age.

relationship you should have gone to police.
Oakley received an aggregate fine of $1,500
with conviction.

Big Fev kicks off with BFLcontest was as fierce as the weather.
First goal of the 2017 BFL season went to
the new co coach of Melton South, Brendon
Fevola. The 2006 and 2009 AFL Coleman
Medalist had four goals on the board in
the first quarter as the ex Carlton champion
strutted his stuff in front of a large crowd on
Saturday 8 April.
As a stand alone fixture game, Melton South
took on Melton in a hotly contested season
opener. Melton South, after a winless 2016,
have attracted some big recruits with AFL
experience including Tayte Pears, Nick
Kommer and Mitch Banner who played at
Darley last year, to bolster their player stocks
to push for a 2017 flag.
Fevola was on fire early with great strength
and bulk, out positioning Melton opponents
to mark and bring his set goal kicking
prowess to the fore.
After a strong first quarter, aided by the
breeze, Melton South lead by nine points
at quarter time. The play was reversed in
the second quarter as Melton fought back
kicking five goals to one to lead by 15 points
at half time.
It was just after half time that the storm
clouds rolled in bringing periods of heavy
rain that caused many in the crowd to leave
early. This was unfortunate as the football

Lightning halts contest - Ballan Football The senior squad took on Buninyong at home and an early
goal from Matt Rollo and the Blues were in for a match. They
certainly went in at all the contests and then the massive
storm hit and lightning led to the umpires halting the match.
Meanwhile the A Grade netball match was abandoned.
Sammy Hitchings and Darren Tanti were dogged in the
middle and made their opponents work hard for their
possessions. In the second quarter the Blues held their
opponents to one goal and at the main break were certainly
in the match. But up forward the Blues were bustled out of
too many contests and just could not convert from the good
work down field. Jack Shaw is certainly gaining great deal
of experience and improving every week in the ruck and
Lachlan Snaith made the most of the chances he had. The
coach never stopped trying to inspire his squad.

The Reserves took on the league heavy weights and were
slow out of the blocks but as the game progressed they came
into their own. The squad welcomed the return of Bernard
Whelan who as ever was incredibly intense up forward and
gave the Blues something to aim for up forward. Watts also
chipped in and moved into the middle to give the team some
bite in the centre contest. Justin Fenwick was ably assisted by
Photos Tim Saultry Dylan Trickey down back and they did a great job controlling
their opponents, but the Bombers had too many runners and
all the drills were in place.

The Under 18s were also slow out of the blocks and certainly
had to earn their kicks. Scores were level at the first break
then the Blues slowly started to get into their rhythm and
follow the game plan. Corey Pascoe had a tremendous game
slicing through many a pack, booting three goals. Connor
McLeod was superb in the half back line. After half time the
Blues defence held the Bombers to just one goal but the Blues
then booted four goals to draw away.

With the Under 15s having to forfeit due to lack of numbers,
the Under 12s had a good day out. Lucas Smits had a great
game in the ruck and set up plenty of goals. Matt Golding
played really well in the middle and Cody Gates did well
up forward. Ethan Boland looked confident in full forward
kicking a goal after a great mark. The Blues had a real spring
in their step and were simply more determined to get the
ball.

2017 season

2017 comes with enormous expectations for the Bacchus Marsh
Football and Netball Club.
Back to back flags is a legitimate aim for the seniors; a spot on
grand final day for the reserves and under 18's; continued improve-
ment in the netball and growth in female football; as well as some
terrific development programs for our juniors and coaches.
The 2017 season has seen the loss of three valuable members of our
premiership side, being Cameron Richardson, Damien Cupido and
Coby Millar.
With the loss of two key forwards, I'm sure some opposition sides
will be questioning our ability to kick enough goals this season,
however, we believe we have others ready to hit the scoreboard and
more than cover those departures.
While Scott Sherlock has joined us as a playing assistant coach,
Ryley Stuhldrier has returned from the very strong Geelong Foot-
ball League alongside Dean Heta, who has spent the majority of his
career in the Ovens and Murray Competition.
