In 2013, the state of California adopted the K-8 Next Generation Science Standards Early
Implementation Initiative. The program is all about combining science experiments with hands
on learning at the very core of the curriculum. With this implementation, the classroom is
evolving to new standards and methods of teaching. Teachers are encouraged to teach their
students the connections between life science, space science, earth science, engineering, and
physical science. Instead of students learning a certain subject at a certain grade level, the
subjects are combined and taught together. Students have raved about the new curriculum and
are actively engaged. The initiative was started due to the low rankings by the United States
among 64 other countries on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Yet even
with this desire to raise the USs ranking, it will come at a price. Budgeting and raising funds
will be a huge key to the success of implanting this initiative all over the country. Besides the
desire for a higher ranking, the ultimate goal of this initiative is the accelerated growth and
quality of each students education by combining experiments with hands on learning.

An article under chapter 3, Fundamental Issues, discusses the importance of life science.
Many do not know the components of life science since it tends to be used in a very broad sense.
Life science combines the three fields and disciplines of Botany, Visology, and Zoology. Along
with biology, life science is becoming more fundamental in teaching. The foundations of life
science seem to have a very direct effect on those students who learn it. Teaching students skills
such as how to develop healthy living conditions promotes their scientific understanding. It also
develops human thinking skills as well nurturing emotions such as love. The first Prime Minister
of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, also has witnessed those with an education in life sciences benefit
in his country. He advocates for the education of science especially life science since he believes
that there is a direct correlation between an individuals education and their quality of life.
According to the Prime Minister, the overall welfare of a society is the outcome of an education
that emphasizes life sciences. Life sciences is a fundamental component of an education
curriculum that has a direct impact on the quality of life.
