Summary and Reflection

I held my lesson in my apartment, because my student was my

roommate, Allison. I liked having her as my student because I felt

comfortable and confident around her, and she picked it up fairly

quickly! I set up my lesson plan so we would go step by step along the

process, leaving room to stop for further explanation if she struggled.

Overall, the first part of the lesson went pretty well (assembly,

identifying parts, etc.). Allison struggled a little bit with the breathing

exercises, because she was not used to having to breathe that way for

that long. We took a brief break after the breathing exercises so she

could get relaxed, and stop being dizzy.

When it came to making sounds on the instrument, she struggled

at first, but after awhile she was able to produce a sound (she was very

excited!). Once we put the oboe together, we worked on sustaining

notes since her air support was not very strong.

Overall, I stuck to my lesson plan pretty well. We spent more

time on some things then others, which is important in order to suit the

needs of the student rather than sticking straight to the procedures. I

felt pretty confident and prepared in my teaching abilities going into

this, because I practiced a lot on my own in order to be fully prepared. I

believe my goals and objectives were met with this lesson plan!

Participant Statement

My students name was Allison Tipsord, and shes a senior IDLS

background. Allison has little to no musical background, but has taken

dance since she was 3 years old. Our lesson lasted about 45 minutes.
