Donotallowsparksorfirenearthebatteries(especiallywhenthebatteriesareoncharge)becausethe
gasesfromtheelectrolytearehighlyflammable.Thebatteryfluidisdangeroustotheskinandespecially
totheeyes.
Disconnectthebatteryterminalsbeforearepairismadetotheelectricalsystem.Alwaysdisconnectthe
negativeterminalfirst.
Onlyonepersonmustcontroltheengine.
Ensurethattheengineisoperatedonlyfromthecontrolpanelorfromtheoperator'sposition.
Ifyourskincomesintocontactwithhighpressurefuel,obtainmedicalassistanceimmediately.
Dieselfuelandlubricatingoil(especiallyusedlubricatingoil)candamagetheskinofcertainpersons.
Protectyourhandswithglovesoraspecialsolutiontoprotecttheskin.
Donotwearclothingwhichiscontaminatedbylubricatingoil.Donotputmaterialwhichiscontaminated
withoilintothepockets.
Discardusedlubricatingoilandcoolantinaccordancewithlocalregulationstopreventcontamination.
Thecombustiblematerialofsomecomponentsoftheengine(forexamplecertainseals)canbecome
extremelydangerousifitisburned.Neverallowthisburntmaterialtocomeintocontactwiththeskinorwith
theeyes.
Alwaysuseasafetycagetoprotecttheoperatorwhenacomponentistobepressuretestedinacontainer
ofwater.Fitsafetywirestosecuretheplugswhichsealthehoseconnectionsofacomponentwhichisto
bepressuretested.
Donotallowcompressedairtocontactyourskin.Ifcompressedairentersyourskin,obtainmedicalhelp
immediately.
Turbochargersoperateathighspeedandathightemperatures.Keepfingers,toolsanddebrisawayfrom
theinletandoutletportsoftheturbochargerandpreventcontactwithhotsurfaces.
Somecomponentsarenotwaterproofandshouldnotbewashedwithahighpressurewaterjetorsteam.
Donotwashanenginewhileitrunsorwhileitishot.Ifcoldcleaningfluidsareappliedtoahotengine,
certaincomponentsontheenginecouldbedamaged.

DonotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisaDONOTOPERATElabelorsimilar
warninglabelattachedtothestartswitchortothecontrols.
Ensurethattheareasaroundrotatingpartsareclear.
Resetalloftheshutdowndevicesoralarmcomponents.
Checktheleveloftheenginelubricatingoil.MaintaintheoillevelbetweentheLandtheHmarksonthe
dipstick.
Checkthelevelofthecoolant.Maintainthelevelofcoolantwithin13mm(0.5inch)ofthebottomofthe
fillerpipe.Iftheengineisfittedwithasightglass,maintainthecoolantlevelinthesightglass.
Checktheserviceindicatorfortheaircleaner.Whentheredwarningindicatorisseenthroughtheclear
panelaftertheenginehasstopped,theairfilterelementmustberenewed.
Ensurethatanydrivenequipmenthasbeendisengaged.Removeanyelectricalloads.
Howtostartanew,anoverhauledengineoranenginewhichhasbeeninstorage
Primetheturbocharger.Thiscanbeachievedbyoperatingtheenginebrieflywiththeinjectiondisableswitch
on.
Whenanewengine,oranenginewhichhasbeenserviced,isfirststarted,preparetostoptheengineifan
overspeedconditionoccurs.Usethequickestmethodavailable,forexample:EmergencyStopbutton.
Startprocedure
Thisstartproceduremaybeusedforallengineswhicharenotfittedwithanairinletheater.
RefertotheOwner'sManualoftheOEMforyourtypeofcontrols.Usethisproceduretostarttheengine:
1MovetheignitionswitchtotheONposition.Ifasystemfaultisindicatedby,forexampleapanellight,
investigatethecause.IfnecessaryusethePerkinsElectronicServiceTool,EST.
2PushthestartbuttonorturntheignitionswitchtotheSTARTpositiontooperatetheengine.
3Iftheenginefailstostartwithin30seconds,releasethestartbuttonorignitionswitch.Waitfor30seconds
toallowthestartermotortocoolbeforeattemptingtostarttheengineagain.
Note:Asystemfaultmaybeindicatedaftertheengineisstarted.IfthisoccurstheECMhasdetecteda
problemwiththesystem.Investigatethecause,ifnecessaryusethePerkinsservicetoolEST.
Caution:Oilpressureshouldrisewithin15secondsaftertheenginestarts.Theelectronicenginecontrols
monitortheoilpressureandwillstoptheengineiftheoilpressureisbelownormal.

engine.
Warning!Ethertypefuelsmustnotbeusedinthe280618sixcylinderengine.
Theenginewillstartwithoutaidsdowntoatemperatureof10C(14F),buttheabilitytostartattemperatures
below10C(50F)willimprovebytheuseofacylinderblockcoolantheateroradevicewhichheatsthe
crankcaseoil.Thiswillhelptoreducewhitesmokeandmisfireswhentheengineisstartedincoldweather.
Note:Iftheenginehasnotbeenrunforseveralweeks,fuelmayhavedrained.Airmayhavemovedintothe
filterhousing.Also,whenfuelfiltershavebeenchanged,someairwillbeleftinthefilterhousing.Referto"How
toeliminateairfromthefuelsystem"onpage49.
1MovetheignitionswitchtotheONposition.Ifasystemfaultisindicatedby,forexampleapanellight,
investigatethecause.IfnecessaryusethePerkinsElectronicServiceTool,EST.
2PushthestartbuttonorturntheignitionswitchtotheSTARTpositiontocranktheengine.
3Iftheenginefailstostartwithin30seconds,releasethestartbuttonorignitionswitch.Waitfor30seconds
toallowthestartermotortocoolbeforeattemptingtostarttheengineagain.Repeatforamaximumofthree
timesiftheenginefailstostartinvestigatethecause,
4Asystemfaultmaybeindicatedaftertheengineisstarted.IfthisoccurstheECMhasdetectedaproblem
withthesystem.Investigatethecause,ifnecessaryusethePerkinsservicetoolEST.RefertotheDiagnostic
Manualformoreinformationonenginediagnostics.

Thecoldstartstrategywillbeactivatedwhenthecoolanttemperatureisbelow17C(63F).Thecoldstart
strategywillcontinueuntilthecoolanttemperaturereaches28C(82F),oruntiltheenginehasbeenrunning
for14minutes.Atimerwilldisablethecoldstartstrategyafteramaximumtimeof14minutes.
IfthecoldstartstrategyisactiveandiftheECMmeasuresenginespeed,theenginepowerthatisavailableis
reduced.
AftertheECMhascompletedthecoldmode(orthecoldmodeisdisabled),itcannotbeenabledagainuntil
theECMisswitchedOFF.
Ifanenginehasbeenstopped,forexampleafterafaulthasbeenindicated,donotattempttorestarttheengine
untilithasfullystopped.
Aftertheenginehasstarted
1Checkallofthegaugesduringthewarmupperiod.
2Performanotherwalkaroundinspection.Checktheengineforfluidleaksandairleaks.
Note:Gaugereadingsshouldbeobservedandthedatashouldberecordedfrequentlywhiletheengineruns.
Acomparisonofthedataovertimewillhelptodeterminenormalreadingsforeachgauge,itwillalsohelpto
detectabnormalconditionsofoperation.Significantchangesinthereadingsshouldbeinvestigated.
