What is WhyIslam?
WhyIslam (Outreach program) is one of the most well known ICNA projects. Given the
prevalent misinformation, misunderstanding and stereotypes coupled with our duty to spread
truth about Islam, this is one of the most significant projects that ICNA has embarked upon and
continues to maintain, Alhamdulillah.

WhyIslam uses some of the most unconventional, innovative, and creative approaches of
spreading the truth about Islam among the larger society. WhyIslam has been using variety of
fresh ideas available including advertising through Bus Ads, Transit Shelter Ads, Billboards,
Islam Radio Ad; booths at shopping malls, Bart Stations, Fairs and Festival, Flea Markets and
Farmers Markets.

WhyIslam further maintains a Free Hotline (1-877-WhyIslam) with live operators, 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year, ready to demystify and clarify any misconception or
misrepresentation of Islam.

WhyIslam has one of the most extensive free literature program for people who are interested
about learning our religion, Islam. Literature and copies of Quran are provided free of cost to
MSAs, Prison Dawah, Prison libraries and other dawah organizations. WhyIslam also provides
free literature to non-muslims directly through our website WhyIslam.org (national) and
WhyIslambay.org (local)

We have attractive pamphlets that inform readers about everything from What does Islam say
about Terrorism to Status of Women in Islam to Concept of God in Islam to Who is
Jesus? We also have FREE translations of Quran which we gladly provide to anyone who
would like to read it.

In summary:

Dawah Workshop 2009

A Project of ICNA

Why Dawah?

Do you know that at one time, as you move up on your pedigree, one of your ancestors was a
pagan, worshipping creation and idols? How did our ancestors accept Islam? Well, Prophet
Muhammad (saw) and Sahaba (ra), struggled with their time, wealth and lives, to make sure that
the message of Islam can be delivered to our pagan ancestors in regions of Africa, Asia, Europe,
Indian subcontinent. It is due to these immense sacrifices that we can call ourselves Muslims.

Sahaba (ra) could have been contempt with believing and practicing Islam and being part of the
best generation, they could have stay put in Madinah, holding annual conferences, or isolating
themselves in the Masajids, doing zikr etc, but they knew that the message of Islam was meant
for all of humanity and they made sure that it reached far and wide.

Us, we don't have to struggle with any barriers to come here to USA. We, or our parents, came
here in the comfort of a plane, now residing amidst an ocean of darkness, 300 million individuals
waiting to hear the message of Islam. What are we doing about it?

Some of us may be saying that we don't have time, ability or talent to do Dawah. Fine, try your
best and meanwhile support financially those individuals and organizations who are dedicated to
the cause of Dawah, ICNA, MCC, IIIE and others are struggling financially and you can pitch in
to support them in many Dawah endeavors these organizations are undertaking.

Remember, 46% of the USA population associates Islam with violence. They are fed this
negative propaganda day in and day out. Who will correct this misinformation and who will
explain Islam to 300 million people? It is you, me and the Muslim Ummah in this part of the
world. If we don't fulfill this obligation of Dawah as mentioned in the Quran 16:125, 2.143 etc,
then don't be surprised if the number of hate crimes increase, our liberties restricted, our
Masajids closed and practicing of Islam altogether banned! Scary? Yes, and our Muslim
Ummah have passed through such calamities many times in history. The Spanish Inquisition of
1492, when Muslims, who ruled Spain for 750 years, were banned from practicing Islam,
forcefully converted, burned at stake or thrown out into the sea. In recent times came the
ethnic/religious cleansing in Bosnia where Muslims, who were living with non-Muslims for
centuries, but due to lack of Dawah and practice of Islam and increase of hatred against Muslim,
eventual catastrophe descended on Bosnian Muslims and the whole world were mere spectators.
May Allah (swt) protect us from such shame and disgrace.

My dear Muslims, with or without us, Allah's (swt) deen of Al-Islam will be spreading far and
wide as is prophesized in the Quran (61:9). If we become part and parcel of being helpers of
Allah (swt) we will be rewarded in this life and the hereafter, if we neglect our obligation of
Dawah we may be held accountable in the hereafter and we may be humiliated with the hands of
non-Muslims in this life.Let pray to Allah (swt) to assist us in fulfilling our obligation of
learning, practicing and conveying Islam. Aameen.

Dawah Workshop 2009

Importance and Necessity of Dawah

Obligation of Dawah

Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful
preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most
gracious(16:125)

Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to God,

works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in
Islam"? (41:33)

Thus, have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that you might be witnesses over the nations,
and the Apostle a witness over yourselves(2:143)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)Pass on the Message from me, even if it be a single verse.
(Bukhari, hadith 3462)

Inviting others to Islam is also a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (s) and all the 124,000 Prophets and
Messenger (peace be upon all) appointed by Allah (swt).

How did the Shahaba (companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) perceived the above
verses of the Quran?

The World is Plagues with Evil, Problems & Suffering:

Economy
Violence
Homicides
Drugs
Racism
Break down of families...

All Muslims are Spiritual Doctors to the World

In Islam is the solution to all the problems plaguing the world.

If we dont share the solutions to societys problems....
o We are like doctors who have the cure for a disease in their hand and dont share it
with their patients

Dawah Workshop 2009

A Project of ICNA

Every single Muslim IS an Ambassador of Islam

Islam is being conveyed to other regardless of the fact that you are opening your mouth or
not.
When people find out that we are Muslims by knowing our name or by our appearance... they
judge Islam by our actions and word.
Thus, why not actively convey Islam with

Consequences of Not Performing Dawah Things may become worse...

Wire-Tapping our Masajid

Arresting of Muslims and throwing them in prison on secret evidence
Hiring informants to monitor Masajid activities
Wire-Tapping our home phone lines
Banning us from placing our ads. in media, newspapers, radio, TV, Buses
Banning the Hijab in schools and govt. buildings
Banning the beard
Closing of masajids
Freezing of assets of Muslim charities closing our Hifz schools closing of full-time
Islamic schools Sunday schools Deportation of Muslims on immigration charges
closing our Alim schools Restricting the flow of Muslims scholars to and from USA

So, who should we blame for our misfortunes?

Media?
Islamophobics?
Right-wingers?

OURSELVES!

Option #1

We can continue to do little and busy ourselves in job, family and an Islamic program here and
there

Consequences of Option #1

Hate against Islam & Muslims will grow

Our rights and liberties to practice our deen will be restricted
Our property and lives could be compromised
Most of all, we will held accountable in front of Allah for not fulfilling our responsibility as
being witnesses unto mankind.

8
Dawah Workshop 2009

A Project of ICNA

Option #2

Change the public opinion in favor of Islam

More people will become receptive to Islam
More individuals will convert to Islam (with guidance from Allah, swt)
We will leave a better world for our children and future generations, insha Allah
Obtain an everlasting success in the hereafter for fulfilling our obligation as being witnesses
unto mankindinsha Allah

Summary:

Dawah is an obligation as mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah

Dawah is needed to save the society from going towards hell-fire
Dawah is needed to create a better world for ourselves and for the future generations
Negative consequences of not doing dawah
Positive consequences of doing dawah

Conclusion:

Allah will fulfill His promise regardless of our action or inaction with or without us
If we failed to invite humanity towards Allah (swt) and Islam
If we dont save the society in their path towards hellfire
If we dont provide solutions to societys problems:

America may never forgive us!

The world may never forgive us!
May Allah (swt) make it easy for all of us to fulfill all our obligations, unite our hearts, provide us
means to work together as one body, forgive our shortcomings and rewards us for all our endeavors
in His path.aameen.

Dawah Workshop 2009

A Project of ICNA
Why the need for this Dawah course?

When a person goes to a doctor with some ailment, the doctor will not immediately give him the
medication and sends him home. The patient is first seen by the nurse who takes the
temperature, blood pressure, weight, height etc. Secondly, the doctor will ask the patient some
questions regarding the details of his ailment, performs some physical examination and if needed
sends him for blood tests etc. When all data is available, then and only then the doctors makes
the proper diagnosis and then prescribes the proper treatment specific to that person and his
background. Thus, the form of medication (liquid, capsule, tablet, injection), how much to give
(half a tablet), when to give (morning, before meals etc.), what is it mixed with (water, other
medication etc.). This is done because each person is different, each disease is different and each
treatment is different. Thus, by assigning the correct medication, the appropriate amount, at the
right time etc. will provide the maximal impact on the body of the person. Thus to provide the
best treatment, all the necessary data on the patient is necessary, including his or her background.

Likewise, for us to effectively perform dawah on a group or an individual we should possess as

much data on him, his religious background, which denomination he belongs to, educational
background, race, ethnicity, nationality etc, so we can cater our dawah methodology to that
individual. The examples and analogies we use to explain tauheed, the choice of words we use
to explain Islam, the historical accounts we use etc, will be different when we are doing dawah to
a college professor compared to a high school graduate or a housewife.

It is my hope and prayer that some benefit can come out from the contents of this book to assist
in our dawah endeavors to Christians.

Invite (all) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful
preaching, and reason with them in the better way (Quran 16:125)

How to present Islam?

There is only one God. No one has seen God, but we know God through the names or attributes God
has given for Himself. God is the Creator, thus He alone created all things that are
existing. God is the Sustainer, thus He alone is controlling the whole universe,
provided us with the water, air and food. Our Creator, God, is a loving God and
wants to guide humanity, thus He sent His guidance to various prophets, Noah,
Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them). None of these
prophets of God worshiped other human beings, or saints, or idols or the sun or
the moon etc, they all worshiped and submitted to the guidance of One God.
Now, when you translate the concept 'submit to one God' into Arabic language,
you get the word 'Islam'. Thus all the prophets of God, came with the faith of
Islam (submission to one God and not to His creation).

Thus, when you enter Islam, you are not entering into a new faith, you are, in fact, entering the same
religion which Jesus and Moses and Abraham and Muhammad (peace be upon them) all believed in and
preached to their people. Thus, you are spiritually getting connected with all these great men of God.

Secondly, God is All-Just, and when a baby is born, he/she is not born with the stigma of sin. All babies
are pure and innocent and God has implanted a spiritual chip in each baby to recognize one true God.
Thus, if we leave the baby alone to grow up, without any outside influence, then the baby will grow up
to recognize, worship and submit to One God (which is Islam), manifest the natural inclination God has
implanted in him. All babies are born as Muslims (one who submits to one God).

So, when you enter Islam, you are not entering into a new faith, but the same faith as you were born
with, which was Islam. You are 'reverting back' to the same truth, purity and innocence as you were
born with!

The best reward which a person obtains when he/she enters Islam is the peace of mind in this world (by
knowing that the purpose of life is to worship one God) and by obtaining eternal PARADISE in the
hereafter.

With that said, I invite you to embrace Islam and start following the way of life lived by all the Prophets
of God.

To enter Islam, all a person needs to do is to recite a simple phrase which should come from a person's
heart: I bear witness that there is no diety worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that
Muhammad is the slave and Messenger of Allah.

What follows below is a study of a group of people calling themselves Christians
and professing to be the followers of Prophet Jesus Christ (s).

Who is a Christian?

If we look at the dictionary definition of the word Christian, we get:

Anyone who calls himself a Christian

Anyone who follows the faith of Christianity

Who coined the word Christian?

It wasnt God of the New Testament who labeled the early followers of Jesus as Christians. It
was not Jesus either who said You are now called Christians. We may assume that it was the
early followers of Jesus who named themselves as Christians. Not so. The early disciples
travelled to the city of Antioch, Syria and over here they were first called as Christians; by the
pagans of the city of Antioch (Syria). Therefore, it was unbelievers in Christ who coined the
name Christians.

And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. (Book of Acts 11:26)

(Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1997 by

Dawah Point: It is good to remind our Christian friends that the word Muslim was given to us
by our Creator, Allah:

It is He (Allah) Who has named you Muslims both before and in this (the Qur'an) (Quran
22:78)

Who coined the word Christianity?

Nobody. The word Christianity does not occur in the entire Bible! Likewise, the word
Judaism does not occur in the entire Bible.

Dawah Point: Again, its a good reminder to our non-Muslim friends that the word Islam
means submission to Allah (swt) and it was coined by our Creator, Allah (swt)

What is the Bible?

Bible is the name of the book which the Christians and Jews consider as holy and
Word of God. The entire book of the Bible contains 66 Booklets or books and is divided into
two parts. The first part of the Bible is referred to as Old Testament and the second part of the
Bible is referred to as New Testament.

Christians believe in the entire first part (Old Testament) and second part (New
Testament) of the Bible, but Jews only believe in the first part of the bible (Old Testament).
New Testament is written in Greek. Language of Jesus was Hebrew and Aramaic, not Greek.

Old Testaments starts with the creation of Heavens and the earth, Adam (s) and Eve (s)
ends with just before the birth of Jesus Christ (s).

New Testament starts with times around the birth of Jesus Christ (s), then life of his
companions and ends with prophecies of the last days, second coming of Jesus Christ (s) and
some aspects of hereafter.

Was Torah Written in the Lifetime of Moses (PBUH)?

According to the Jews, the first five books of the Old Testament were given to Moses. However,
internal evidence shows that they were written years after Moses passed away:

Old Testament, Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 34, Verses 5-7, 10.

5 And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. 6 He
buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his
grave is. 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died.Since then, no prophet has
risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face

Dawah Points:
Did Moses wrote his own obituary
If Moses did not write or authenticated these books, then how can we trust
them to be the word of God?

Bible Versions

Definition of a Version:

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

A description or account from one point of view, especially as opposed to another: Your version
of the accident differs from mine.

Why so many different versions of the Bible (New Testament)

During the lifetime of Jesus Christ there is no record of anyone recording his sayings. After he
was gone some people started to write down the narrations about his birth, childhood, preaching,
and last days of his life before he was lifted up. The people who wrote down these narrations
include historians, new converts to Christianity, supposed eyewitnesses, supposed disciples.
These early narrations were about the life of Jesus Christ are known as gospels. These are in a
way synonymous with the seerah or biography of the Prophet. There were 10s of gospels
floating around in the land of Christians. They were not initially taken as word of God by the
early Christians and later on each sect adopted their own compilation.

Who was Paul

Paul was born in 10 CE in the city of Tarsus, Turkey. His original name was saul, which was
later changed to Paul. He was not one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. He used to torture early
Christians. On his way to Damascus he saw a vision of Jesus and converted to Christianity. Paul

wrote several letters to early churches and these letters came to be placed inside the New
Testament Bible. In total, fourteen of his letters are amongst the 27 books of the bible. These
letters were written before the other books of the bible.

Paul contradicts many of the commandments of the Old Testaments and those given by Jesus
Christ.

QUICK GUIDE TO BIBLE VERSIONS
Historic - Major Catholic, Anglican/Protestant Versions ( 400 CE-1800 CE)
Latin Vulgate (St. Jerome) c.400: the Bible of the Western Church through the middle ages;
still the official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church.

Wycliffe (& Purvey) c.1385: first translation of whole (or most of) Bible from Vulgate into
vernacular, medieval English -- [n.b. complete Wycliffe Bible not published until 1850].

Martin Luther c.1522: translation of the Greek N.T. and Hebrew O.T. into vernacular
German; still the standard Bible of German Protestants [Lutheran].

Tyndale c.1525: translation of Greek N.T. [consulting Vulgate and Luther's German
translation] and parts of Hebrew O.T. -- fixed the English translation style.

Coverdale c.1535: little change from Tyndale's, but with new translations for previously
undone portions of O.T. from Vulgate and Luther's [not orig. Hebrew]; Coverdale's PSALMS
still used by Anglicans and Episcopalians in Book of Common Prayer.

Matthew c.1537: Essentially Tyndale's but a publication authorized by the king (Henry VIII);
the first authorized or licensed English Bible - [though license was extended to Coverdale's later
editions].

Great Bible (Cranmer) c.1540: revision of Matthew's Bible produced in a large size;
undertaken at Cromwell's suggestion and claimed the "Bible appointed to the use of the
churches".

Geneva c.1560: revision/collation of Tyndale's and the Great Bible; first English translation to
use the division into verses; considered most scholarly of early English versions; commonly used
for many years - especially among Puritans - and commonly brought to America.

Bishops' c.1568: a rebuttal by the bishops to the Geneva Bible (which they didn't like);
borrowed heavily from Great Bible and, actually, also from Geneva Bible - including use of
verses; uneven quality but formed basis for KJV.

Rheims/Douay c.1582/1610: the official [English] Roman Catholic Bible; translation from
Vulgate [n.b. Bishop Challoner revised in mid 1700's, sometimes called "Challoner-Rheims
Version"].

King James (or Authorized ) Version (KJV or AV) 1611: the standard authorized Bible of
most Protestant churches for 2+ centuries; used the original Hebrew and Greek to inform
comparison/revision of earlier English versions - [leaned heavily on Bishop's Bible; much of the
language actually goes back to Tyndale's].

Modern - Major English Language Versions (1800-1990)

Revised Version or English Revised Version (RV or ERV) N.T. 1881, O.T. 1884: first major
revision of KJV; done by lengthy committee process including Anglican and most Protestant
faiths but NOT Roman Catholics.

American Revised Version or American Standard Version (ARV or ASV) N.T. 1900, O.T.
1901: a re-edited version of the RV, basically the same.

Moulton (Modern Readers') Bible 1907: a rearrangement of texts rather than a significantly
new version, but an early attempt to "update" the Bible.

Moffat Bible N.T. 1913, O.T. 1924: a new translation from early Greek and Latin texts -
considered flawed because of the choice of source texts and the occasional rearrangement of
verses but still a major work and fairly popular in it's time.

Smith-Goodspeed or "Chicago " Bible c.1930's: [The Bible: An American Translation

(AT)] first significant attempt to make truly modern language version.

Knox Bible N.T. 1945, O.T. 1948: a new translation of the Vulgate bible; the New Testament
was officially approved by the Roman Catholic church, though not supplanting the Rheims N.T.
(first translation done by a single individual).

Revised Standard Version (RSV) 1946-1957: an attempt to improve on the language of the
RV/ASV; more widely accepted, but not supplanting KJV.

Modern Language Bible (New Berkeley) (MLB) 1959, rev. 1969: another attempt at a
modernization of the language leaning especially toward an American audience and working
from the Greek and Hebrew texts.

Jerusalem Bible (JB) 1966: Catholic translation based on ancient Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic
texts, but closely following the French "Bible de Jerusalem" [n.b. begun well after the NAB NT
(1941) was done, but finished before the NAB OT (1970)].

New American Standard Bible (NASB) N.T. 1963, O.T. 1970: conservative, fairly literal
translation from mainly Greek texts; attempt to repeat the RV process with more contemporary
language; not very well-received.

New English Bible (NEB) 1970: first completely new [Protestant] translation from original
Bible languages into English since Tyndale.

New American Bible (NAB) O.T. 1969, complete 1970 [added "Confraternity Version" N.T.
of Douay]: The first significant Catholic translation since Douay-Rheims; working from original
Greek texts mainly, rather than Vulgate (Latin); O.T. also made use of Dead Sea Scrolls; original
N.T. rushed and mostly from Vulgate and later (1987) greatly revised/retranslated.

31
Dawah Workshop 2009

A Project of ICNA
Living Bible 1971: most popular "paraphrase translation".

New International Version (NIV) 1973: a conservative, evangelically oriented translation

from Greek and Hebrew texts.

Good News Bible [Today's English Version] (TEV) 1966: "common language" translation from
modern Greek/Hebrew texts; emphasis on effective and accurate communication to the common
reader.

New King James Version (NKJV) N.T. 1979, O.T. 1982: a revision of KJV to improve
readability of text .

New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) 1985: a revision following on the changes made in the French
revision of the Bible de Jerusalem (1973) reflecting some new scholarship in research of the
original texts and translations.

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 1989: the result of continuing revisions from the
committee(s) who made RSV .

Revised English Bible (REB) 1989: a revision of the New English Bible (1970), updating
according to new scholarship in translation.

Jesus came for his own people to save them from their sins (his people
were the Jews)- Matthew 1:21
Jesus said he came not to destroy the law of Moses, but to fulfill it - Matt.
5:17-19
Said he came only for the lost sheep of Israel - Matt. 15:23,24

Matt 10:5-6
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go

(Mankind, Jinns and all that exists)' 21:107

How to ProveIsa (as) was not god

Start with the Attributes of God: All-Mighty, All-Knowing, Eternal, Independent. Then apply these
attributes to Jesus and see if he qualifies...
God is All-Mighty...Jesus was not
'I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not
my own will but the will of Him who sent me' (John 5:30)
God is All-Knowing...Jesus was not
Speaking of the last day Jesus said: 'But of that day or that hour knows no man, neither the angels,
nor the son, but only the father' (Mark 13:32)
God has no Beginning...Jesus was born
...'She brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus' (Matt. 1:25)
God doesn't have a God...Jesus did
Jesus said: 'And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ
whom thou hast sent.' (John 17:3)
God doesn't pray to anyone...Jesus did
'And he (Jesus) went a little farther, and fell on his face (sujud) and paryed.' (Matt.26:39)
God is immortal...But not Jesus
Jesus was supposedly crucified according to the Christians. God died!!! The whole world will utterly
collapse if that happens!!!
They do who say: "God is Christ the son of Mary." But said Christ: "O Children of Israel!
worship God, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other gods with God, - God will
, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help. (5:72)

How to Disprove Trinity

The word 'Trinity' is not mentioned in the Bible
Trinity = Jesus is also a 'god' = disproved earlier
Trinity was formulated in the year 325 by Athanasius,
an Egyptian deacon from Alexandria at the Council of
Nicea presided by Emperor Constantine
- Three century after Jesus gone.
Pagan influence
Jesus and Moses and all prophets proclaimed the
Oneness of God:
Moses - Deut. 6:4 'Hear O Israel: the Lord, our God is
one Lord'
Jesus - Mark 12:29 hear O Israel: the Lord our God is
one Lord'

How to Disprove Original Sin

God is All-Loving, compassionate, merciful and forgiving
Start with a practical example e.g... a father who is displeased with his son
and punished him and then goes on to punish the children of his son, and
then his great grandchildren, etc. Will you consider this father a loving,
caring and forgiving father?
Then how can you credit God such a heinous injustice of ascribing Adam's
and Eve's sin to the progeny born even after thousands of years?
Children: kingdom of God belongs to the children: Mark 10:14, Matthew
19:14. How possible if the children are born sinners?!
A son doesn't bear his father's sin, nor vice versa. 7 verses from the
Bible:
Ezekiel 18:20, 33:20
Deut. 24:16
Quran: 3:25, 2:286, 4:164
II Chron. 25:4
Jeremiah 31:29,30
II Kings 14:6
Roman 2:6

Oneness of Allah in Islam: Tauheed

Allah is one in essence and in His attributes

Allah is the sole creator. There is NO other creator along with Allah or besides Allah.

Allah is the sole entity to be worshiped No one with HIM or besides him

Allah should be worshiped directly, not through any intermediary

Divine Attributes of Allah solely belong to HIM. Attributes of Allah cannot be assigned to
anyone beside HIM or along with HIM.

Attributes of the creation cannot be assigned to Allah (swt)

There is none in the creation like HIM in any aspect.
