In Tattoos have gone mainstream, but they still carry risks by Kim Painter, the author

builds an argument that despite the popularity, tattoos still have health risks. Kim Painter uses
evidence, reasoning and stylistic or persuasive elements to strengthen the logic and
persuasiveness of her argument.

Kim Painter talks about the risks of getting tattoos; she uses evidence to strengthen her
claim. One percent to 5% of tattoo recipients get an infection according to a review published in
the medical journal Lancet in January (p1, p4). Painter uses this evidence to show that even
though the percentage of people who get infections is low, there is still a dangerous risk. Painter
wants to convince the audience that getting tattoos has high risks. She wants the audience to first
analyze their decision.

Painter wants people to analyze their decision but also gives her reasoning to say tattoos
are dangerous. In paragraph 6 she says that tattoos are making a worsening off skin conditions.
Tattoos can trigger psoriasis flare-ups and make skin cancer harder to detect, Leger says. By
that statement, she gives the audience a reason to avoid tattoos so they can prevent cancer from
being detected, causing an even bigger health threat.
