Proposal for SLP

We have chosen to do our Semester Long Project on the educational and social

differences of those who attend public schools vs those who attend private or charter schools.

We will conduct research as well as use the knowledge we have from attending these schools.

Eva and Lexie will use what they know about private school, and Kassie will help with public

school. We will do research to compare test scores, graduation rates, dropout rate, SAT, ACT,

AP scores, and differences in curriculum. We will explain our topic via visual depictions on a

Prezi and interactive surveys for the class. Other topics we plan to look into are crime rates and

teen pregnancy rates. We will look into the cost of private school and investigate whether or

not it is worth the money.

We are planning on using a prezi to gather all of our research. Because of the prior

knowledge we have from attending both public and private schools, we will be able to apply

our research to the personal experiences we have had over our years in different types of

schools. We are planning on using a compare and contrast technique and integrating some of

the ideas that our classmates helped to come up with. Along with our preconceived knowledge

based on our experiences in growing up in different types of schools, we will also use several

educational sites concerning the pros and cons of public/private schooling.

Our topic is relevant to young adults because eventually, many of us will have children and
have to make decisions about their education. This research will help our class as much as it will

help us because it will make us start thinking about what kind of schools we want to put them

in. For example, our research could show that private school students generally have a higher

graduation rate or have higher test scores. This may surprise someone that has attended a

public school their entire life. On the other hand, the research could show that more public

school students end up going to college, which would bring up the question of whether or not

private school tuition is worth it.

We all are planning on providing good information concerning the type of school we

attended and the impact it had on our education. Along with our individual knowledge, we will

all three research the different topics we will be focusing on. Kassie will design the prezi and

conduct research on test scores and college attendance. Lexie is going to head up presenting

the project and will also research the differences in curriculum and dropout rates. Evas main

focus for the project will be research and she will go into depth on crime rates, pregnancy rates,

cost differences, and qualification for teachers.

We are planning on spending one morning a week (after class) working on research

together and gathering/compiling our personal thoughts. The first part of the project will be

based on composing our personal experiences and what we may agree or disagree on

concerning our own personal education (6th and 13th of March). The next steps will be to each

separately conduct research on our assigned topics (20th of March). After doing that we will

compile all of the information we have and organize it within our Prezi (27th of March, 3rd of

April, and 10th of April). Lastly, we are going to spend time going over our project and making

sure we are familiar with what we will be presenting (17th of April).

Our presentation will hopefully make our classmates start to think about topics they

never considered before. We hope to find correlations between the cultures of public and

private schools with our research topics. Our group has some ideas about what our research

will prove, and we are looking forward to seeing if our predictions are correct. Hopefully, our

project will open new doors for inquiry by us as well as our classmates. We hope to take away

new knowledge about this topic, which we think is important and relevant for people our age.
