The Culture of Waiting and Persevering
Tas a good background to
odays First Reading serves
the Gospel story. Moses gets
physically tired from raising
up his hands to petition God
for victory of Israel against the
Amalekites. But with the help of
Aaron and Hur, he perseveres
in making his hands steady till
sunset, until victory is complete.
Likewise, in the Gospel,
perseverance enables the widow
to obtain a just decision even
from the dishonest judge. Her
firmness of resolve finally tires
him out. In the Second Reading,
Paul asks the same thing of
his protg, Timothy: Remain
faithful to what you have learned
and believed Be persistent [in
proclaiming the word], whether
convenient or inconvenient.
Some Bible interpreters say
that once youve asked God for
something, asking for it again
is a sign of lack of faith since
you need to believe that what
you have prayed for is already
granted (cf. Mk 11:24). But
Jesus teaches us clearly that we
are to continue praying until
we receive the answer. Praying
again and again is not a sign of
weak faith, but of persistent faith.
But the modern world
characterized by globalization
and digital media has created
a culture of convenience and
instant gratification. We hear
slogans or shout outs such as: I
want it now!, Just do it! and
I want it all! We are offered
instant coffee, instant noodles,
instant pleasure, instant wealth,
fast craft, express delivery, and
even instant marriage.
Indeed, the culture of instants
and convenience has put aide
our need of and dependence
on God. When we pray, we
expect God to give us what we
are asking for, like a vendo
machine or an automated teller
machine. Pope Francis writes in
Laudato Si that the new values
of the contemporary culture is
assimilated into the stream of
culture, as if reality, goodness
and truth automatically flow from
technological and economic
power as such. Catholic culture
is slowly disappearing. Faith in
God is wavering.
Todays liturgical readings
lead us to an awareness of the
relationship between faith and
culture especially in the light of
our celebration of Sunday for
Cultures. Culture is a human
construct that includes behavior,
beliefs, political and economic
systems, values and symbols
that are passed along from one
generation to the next through
communication and not through
genes. In becoming human, the
Son of God became part of the
history, culture, traditions, and
religion of the Jewish people.
He understands the dynamics
of human nature. In the same
way, the Church should also
incarnate herself in every race
and culture where she finds
herself implanted for the same
motive which led Christ to
bind himself, in virtue of his
incarnation, to the definite social

and cultural conditions of those
human beings with whom he
dwelt.
With new cultures (throw-
away culture, culture of
indifference, consumerism,
commercialism, instant
gratification, etc.) created
by modern society, let us
recall what Saint John Paul
II underlined as the essential
mission of the Pontifical Council
for Culture which he gave in
audience on 14 March 1997:
To help the Church achieve
a new synthesis of faith and
culture for the greatest benefit
of all, it is essential to reaffirm
the fruitfulness of faith for the
development of a culture. Only a
faith that is the source of radical
spiritual decisions can have an
effect on an eras culture.
Traditional Catholic culture
passed on by our parents
teaches us to wait in Gods
time and to kneel down in
perseverance. There is always
the right time--may tamang
panahon. We experience
and bear with the cycles of
the seasons. Weunderstand
that patience, forbearance, and
discipline entail hard work.
Waiting for Lords perfect time
is a sacrifice. It is in the active
waiting process that we can
truly grow in our faith in God.
May we live this culture of
waiting and taking time in our
daily life, in our spirituality and
relationship with others.

The outstretched hands of
Moses during the Israelites
battle against the Amalekites
assure Israels victory. This story
illustrates to us the power of
prayer.
A reading from the Book of
Exodus
IN THOSE days, Amalek
came and waged war against
Israel. Moses, therefore, said
to Joshua, Pick out cer tain
men, and tomorrow go out and
engage Amalek in battle. I will be
standing on top of the hill with
the staff of God in my hand.
So Joshua did as Moses told
him: he engaged Amalek in
battle after Moses had climbed
to the top of the hill with Aaron
and Hur.
As long as Moses kept his
hands raised up, Israel had the
better of the fight, but when he
let his hands rest, Amalek had
the better of the fight. Moses
hands, however, grew tired;
so they put a rock in place for
him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron
and Hur supported his hands,
one on one side and one on
the other, so that his hands
remained steady till sunset.
And Joshua mowed down
Amalek and his people with the
edge of the sword.

that town used to come to him
and say, Render a just decision
for me against my adversary.

was unwilling, but eventually
he thought, While it is true that
I neither fear God nor respect
any human being, because this
widow keeps bothering me I
shall deliver a just decision for
her lest she finally come and
strike me.
The Lord said, Pay attention
to what the dishonest judge
says. Will not God then secure

Saint Pauls Hymn to Love
In his First Letter to the Corinthians (13), Paul describes genuine
love, asserting that without love, we are nothing at all. Pauls
message can readily be applied to daily family life.
Love is patient; overlooking and enduring others faults, failings,
irritating habits; true patience does not keep a record of wrongs
or disappointments.
Love is kind, always willing to do ones part in doing the daily
