PART 1 GENERAL
A. This Section covers the furnishing, installing, testing and maintaining an irrigation
system, complete in all respects, including but not limited to; piping, tubing, fittings,
water meters, bubblers, spray heads, sprinkler heads, emitters, controllers,
specialized valving, central control system and all other appurtenances necessary for
an operating system.
E. The Contractor shall furnish all tools, labor, equipment, material and other incidentals
required to complete the Work in accordance with the Contract requirements.

1.04 REFERENCES
A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

1.05 DEFINITIONS
A. air release valve: A valve to release air or gas which tends to accumulate at high
points on pipelines.
B. air valve: Any valve to discharge air when pipes are being filled or to admit air when
they are being emptied.
D. application rate: The rate at which water is applied to the soil by the sprinklers in
pattern.
G. automatic pump: A pump provided with a flow switch which starts and stops the
pump automatically depending on the water level in a suction sump, tank, or other
water storage.
I. ball valve: A form of shut-off device, having a ball which can be turned to move its
port or ports relative to the body seat ports to control the flow of fluid.
K. butterfly valve: A circular disc fitted inside a pipe and hinged at two pivots on a
diameter axis.
M. check valve: A device that prevents a reverse water flow in pipes and sprinkler
heads. Commonly used in sprinkler heads to prevent low head drainage.
N. controller: An electric timing device that operates each zone for a predetermined
time and frequency. It is an automatic timing device that sends an electric signal for
automatic valves to open or close according to a set irrigation schedule.
O. coupler: A device, either self-sealed or mechanically sealed, that connects the ends
of two lengths of pipe or pipe to a hose.
P. coverage: The extent of covering by sprinkler heads with respect to proper head
spacing.
Q. deadleg: A length of pipe ending at a fitting through which water flows only when
fitting is opened.
R. deflector: That part of a sprinkler head on which water impinges and which is
designed to distribute the water in a specified fashion.
S. discharge: The volume of fluid per unit of time flowing along a pipe, or the output
rate of a device or equipment such as a pump.
U. drip irrigation: Any type of irrigation system that applies water to the soil very slowly
and is the most efficient irrigation technology in terms of both water and energy use.
Also known as trickle irrigation.
W. filter: A device made of or containing a porous material used to collect particles from
a liquid passing through.
X. flexible joint: A joint capable of allowing relative movement between the component
parts (e.g. socket and spigot joints with an elastomeric sealing element or a clamped
joint, for example a bolted coupling).
Y. flow control valve: A valve which fluctuates, such that the present demand remains
constant regardless of supply.
Z. foot valve: A non-return valve placed at the foot of a column of pipes, such as the
suction line of a pump.
AA. gate valve: Valve that closes or regulates the flow in a pipeline by a plate sliding at
right angles to the flow.
BB. globe valve: A water valve in the form of a circular metal disc, which is moved by a
threaded spindle.
CC. head: The potential energy of water due to its height above a given level.
DD. head spray: The maximum height of a spray above the irrigation head nozzle, when
operating at nominal working pressure.
EE. hose bib: Valve configured to be mounted on a wall, in a valve box, etc. having
threads to accommodate the connection of a water hose.
GG. hydrostatic test: A pressure test conducted using water or other approved liquid as
the test medium.
HH. infiltration rate: The rate at which water is absorbed, or seeps into, or through the
interstices of a soil.
JJ. irrigation piping network: A piping network, carrying water for irrigation purpose
from downstream of an isolation valve located on a branch of a water distribution
piping network, to the point of use. It consists of mains and branches. Irrigation piping
network may be a part of an independent irrigation system having no connection with
potable water distribution systems. In this case, water used for irrigation may or may
not be potable water.
KK. irrigation: Intentional application of water for purposes of sustained plant growth and
optimized production.
LL. irrigation system: Physical components (pumps, pipelines, valves, nozzles, ditches,
gates, siphon tubes, turnout structures) and management used to apply irrigation
water by an irrigation method. It consists of irrigation piping network, valves,
cross-connection controls and all appurtenances carrying or supplying water for
irrigation to the point of use.
NN. lateral: Piping between the control valve and the sprinkler head.
OO. main: The main of any system of continuous piping is the principal artery of the
system to which branches may be connected.
PP. micro irrigation system: Low pressure and low volume, wherein water is applied to
the soil surface as drops or smaller streams through emitters. Preferred term is drip
irrigation.
QQ. non-return valve: Valve that prevents reversal of flow (backflow preventer).
RR. nozzle: That part of the irrigation head through which the water spray is discharged.
SS. operating pressure: The pressure at which a device or irrigation system is designed
to operate.
TT. pop-up sprinkler head: A sprinkler head that retracts below ground level when it is
not operating.
UU. pressure: The force exerted over a surface divided by its area. In irrigation, pressure
usually describes the amount of energy available to move water through a pipe,
sprinkler or emitter.
VV. pressure rating (PR): The estimated maximum pressure that the medium in the pipe
can exert continuously with a high degree of certainty that failure of the pipe will not
occur.
XX. quick coupler valve: A device attached to the system mainline which is activated by
inserting a key attached to a sprinkler head or hose. Used for supplemental water.
YY. radius of throw: Distance from the sprinkler head to the furthest point of water
application and is used only for heads with circular wetting patterns.
ZZ. riser: An upright piece of pipe with male nominal pipe threads on each end, usually
affixed to a lateral or sub-main used to support nozzles, heads, emitters, backflow
preventers, and valves.
AAA. run time: Length of time to operate an irrigation system or an individual zone.
BBB. sleeve: A piece of pipe installed under paved areas to accommodate irrigation
system pipe and wiring and used for ease of replacing equipment.
CCC. solenoid: Electromagnet that is connected to a controller and facilitates the opening
and closing of automatic control valves.
DDD. solvent welded: A chemical substance used to dissolve the outer surface of PVC
pipe and the inside of fittings, blending them as one.
EEE. spray irrigation: Application of water by a small spray or mist to the soil surface,
where travel through the air becomes instrumental in the distribution of water (In
some countries sprinkler irrigation is called spray irrigation).
FFF. sprinkler: Type of irrigation using mechanical devices with nozzles (sprinklers) to
distribute the water by converting water pressure to a high velocity discharge stream
or streams.
GGG. sprinkler head: A device sealing an aperture in a pipe of a sprinkler installation that
discharges water automatically in a predetermined pattern over a specified area.
III. stop valve: A valve to stop or start the flow of water, usually in a pipe.
JJJ. strainer: A perforated pipe, cylinder, or similar tube. It allows the passage of water
but not large particles.
KKK. surge: A sudden increase of pressure in a pipeline resulting from closing a valve at
its lower end. The magnitude and frequency is dependent on the velocity of flow,
size, length and material of the pipe.
LLL. surge pipe: A stand pipe with an open top to release surge pressure.
MMM.swing joint: Threaded connection of pipe and fittings between the pipe and sprinkler
which allows movement to be taken up in the threads rather than as a shear force on
the pipe. Also used to raise or lower sprinklers to a final grade without plumbing
changes.
NNN. thrust block: Normally, concrete poured in place at changes in direction of water
flow in piping systems to prevent movement of the pipe.
OOO. trace element: Chemical element required only in minute amounts by living
organisms for normal growth.
PPP. valve: A device used to control the flow of water. Isolation valves are used to shut-off
water for repairs. Control valves turn on and off the water to the individual circuits of
sprinklers or drip emitters. Check valves allow the water to flow in only one direction.
Master valves are located at the water source and turn on and off the water for the
QQQ. water hammer: A shock wave created by a fast-closing valve. It is also called
hydraulic shock. It is a phenomenon which occurs when the velocity of water flowing
in pipelines is rapidly changed, usually by a rapid or sudden gate or valve closure,
starting or stopping of a pump, or sudden release of air. The resulting pressure
waves pass through the water at high velocities and can produce very high
momentary positive and/or negative pressures.
RRR. working pressure: The maximum pressure which a piping system can sustain in
continuous use under given service conditions without pressure surge.
SSS. zone: A section of an irrigation system served by a single control valve. Zones are
comprised of similar sprinkler types and plant material types with similar water
requirements and types.
1.06 SUBMITTALS
A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:
a) Within 30 days after the award of the Contract and before delivery or
installation of any materials or equipment, a complete schedule of
materials and equipment shall be submitted.
b) The schedule shall include catalog cuts, diagrams, drawings, and such
other data as may be required to demonstrate compliance with the
specifications.
2. Shop Drawings
a) Within 30 days after the date of award of the Contract, Shop Drawings
c) Approval of the schedules and drawings shall not relieve the Contractor
of responsibility for the satisfactory performance of the equipment.
d) Only one submittal, including all piping, equipment, controls, layout and
wiring diagrams and any necessary appurtenances shall be made.
Partial submittals shall not be accepted.
3. Material Samples
b) The material samples shall comprise, but not be limited to the following:
1) Plastic pipe, conduit and flexible emitter distribution hose, and
emitter outlet tubing, 600 mm length of each size and type.
2) One of each valve box lid with "Irrigation Water" inscriptions in
Arabic and English.
3) Control wire, 600 mm length of each color, with schedule of color
description.
4) Sealing packet for waterproof control wire splices.
5) Plastic fittings, one of each material type and configuration.
6) Remote control valves complete with solenoid valve assembly
and pressure regulator valve for each size and type.
7) Spray pop-ups and rotors, one of each type proposed.
8) Drip emitters, one of each type proposed.
9) Dripper line, 1 linear meter length of each type to be used.
10) Bubblers, one of each type proposed.

8. Test Report
a) Equipment and materials shop and field test reports indicating and
interpreting test results for compliance with performance requirements.
9. Inspection and Testing Agency
a) Name, address and credentials of the proposed independent inspection
and testing agency, along with the qualifications of key laboratory
personnel responsible for the inspection and testing services.
B. The following documents shall be submitted during or after the execution of Work:
1. Manuals
a) Prior to the final inspection of the irrigation system, the Contractor shall
furnish manuals to the Royal Commission containing complete
drawings, diagrams and spare parts lists of all equipment installed
showing components and catalog numbers. In addition, each manual
shall contain the following:
1) Index sheet indicating the Contractor's name, address, and
telephone number.
2) Copies of equipment warranties and certificates.
3) List of equipment with names, addresses, and telephone numbers
of local manufacturer's representatives.
4) The manufacturers catalogs and spare parts numbers of all
permanent works together with a recommended spares list.
5) Complete operating and maintenance instructions in sufficient
detail to permit operating personnel to understand, operate and
maintain all equipment installed, including trouble shooting
procedures.
6) Complete information on computer, hardware, software,
programming, manufactures hand book, models etc., to be utilized
in the central control system.
7) Paint and protective coatings, which shall be represented by
sample labels, containing name or title of materials,
manufacturer's stock number, manufacturer's name and contents
by volume, for major pigment and vehicle constituents as well as
thinning and application instructions.
2. Record Drawings
a) The record drawings shall be prepared no later than 20 days after the
completion of the corresponding part of the work, accurately reflecting
c) Record drawings shall give the exact location, with respect to the road
section, other pipelines and other permanent features, of all standard
and special pipes, fittings, valves, irrigators and all other items
incorporated in the work, including diameters, pressure class or rating,
the actual pressures as measured on the highest and lowest irrigators
commanded by each pressure regulating valve and route of the control
wiring and the source of electric power supply.
3. Controller Charts
d) The chart shall be a black-line print with different color used to indicate
the zone controlled by each station. The zone number shown on the
controller chart shall match the number on the actual control valve
identification tag.
g) The chart shall be affixed to the inside of the RTU enclosure door using
approved mastic or fastening system.
a) The Contractor shall work out in detail a complete operating program for
the controller or RTU, including station operation duration and
sequencing, based on the criteria provided in the approved Shop
Drawings and in consultation with Royal Commission.
C. Quality control documents shall be submitted either before, during or after the work,
as applicable, and shall include:
A. General
1. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop
and propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the
specified quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.
1. The Contractor shall schedule and perform all testing and inspections required.
Costs of all testing, retesting and inspections shall be borne by the Contractor.
3. The Royal Commission will have unrestricted entry to the fabrication shops
and shall be given access to all areas where manufacturing is in process in
order to make all inspections necessary to confirm compliance with the
specifications.
4. The Royal Commission reserves the right to inspect all materials and
workmanship at its discretion and may reject improper, inferior, or defective
materials and workmanship at any stage of production. All defective materials
shall be repaired or replaced as required by the Royal Commission. Rejected
material shall promptly be removed from the site.
6. If at any time during installation and testing, weather or any other factor causes
the degradation of the pipe foundation, pipe and fitting installation, bedding or
backfill, all affected materials shall be removed and re-installed in accordance
with this Specification, or as directed by Royal Commission.
1. The Contractor shall establish and maintain an internal quality control system,
which shall include but not be limited to:
h) Checking all pipe-work to ensure that it has been securely fixed prior to
any backfilling operation.
i) Checking that valve boxes are properly aligned, that suitable operating
keys are provided, and in case of deep valves, that adequate extension
spindles are installed prior to handing over.
D. Quality Assurance
1. General
a) The Contractor shall be responsible for the accuracy of all layout work
and shall retain and pay for the services of a licensed surveyor to set the

1. The Contractor shall take every precaution to locate, protect and support all
existing utility lines, overhead or underground, and all other property and
surface structures during construction, unless their removal is shown on the
plans or directed by the Royal Commission.
3. The Contractor shall preserve all protective covers, warning tapes, position
markers, etc., pertaining to existing underground utilities during excavation and
shall restore them in position during the backfilling.
4. The Contractor shall relocate the existing utilities and structures, which
interfere with the work.
6. The Contractor shall repair any damage to the existing utility lines or other
facilities and restore them as nearly as practical to their original condition to
the satisfaction of the Royal Commission and defray all associated costs.
1. The Contractor shall maintain access to adjacent areas for vehicular and
pedestrian traffic and shall employ flagmen, barricades, warning signs, and
warning lights to protect the general public from any hazards associated with
the open trenches.
1. The Contractor shall not discharge excess concrete or other material into a
drainage pipe, catch basin, ditch, stream, river, pond, or lake.
2. The Contractor shall not discharge or allow concrete or other material to spill
onto any roadway or appurtenances either during placement or while in transit.
D. Protection of Vegetation
1. All existing vegetation such as trees, shrubs and grasses on or adjacent to the
work site which are not to be removed and which do not unreasonably interfere
with the work shall be preserved and protected.
E. Environmental Requirements
1. The Contractor shall comply with any applicable portion of local environmental
regulations pertaining to irrigation of the landscaped areas on building sites.
2. Site work such as trenching and backfilling shall not be performed during wet
or muddy conditions.
F. Coordination
1. The Contractor shall be responsible for the proper coordination of all phases of
work under this Contract.
2. The Contractor shall coordinate the work and equipment as specified herein
with work to be performed and equipment to be furnished under other sections
of the specifications in order to assure a complete and satisfactory installation.
3. The Contractor shall examine Drawings and Specifications for all Contracts to
determine the nature of proposed construction and shall perform work to
conform to construction called for in such a manner as not to interfere or delay
work of other Contractors.
4. During the maintenance operations, due to extensive interface with the other
parties which may impact maintenance activities, effective coordination of the
maintenance work with others is critical for satisfactorily conducting required
activities.

2. Sprinkling shall be kept to a minimum and shall not produce runoff from the
site. Flushing of streets shall not be permitted.

1. The work site shall at all times be kept neat, clean and free of waste material
or rubbish.
2. Any surplus equipment and material not required for further performance of the
work shall be promptly removed from the work site.
3. Upon completion of the work, all equipment, temporary structures, rubbish and
unused materials shall be removed from the work site.

1. The Central Irrigation control system shall comprise of; development, supply,
installation, commissioning and testing of a fully workable system for the whole
project area under the Scope of Work and for the monitoring center, including
but not limited to the following:
d) Allow operator to change process set points for any controller locally or
from central computer and remotely from other controller.
e) Allow program change from local controller for the same as well as other
controllers with proper access codes.
h) Allow operator to start, stop and control field equipment from the field
and central control station.

a) All control system works execution shall be in accordance with the best
international control system installation practices and latest applicable
standards giving special attention to security of the system operation,
user friendly and continuous trouble free operation.

B. The Maintenance Procedures Manual shall be complete in all aspects and submitted
to the Royal Commission for review and approval not less than 90 days prior to the
scheduled completion of construction activities.
E. The Contractor shall be prepared, staffed and fully equipped to implement the
maintenance programs and requirements upon approval of the Maintenance
Procedures Manual.
F. Following the approval of the Manual, the Contractor may propose or recommend
revisions and additions which result from on site experience and application of the
maintenance procedures. Upon approval, the Contractor shall modify the Manual as
necessary and shall promptly implement such revisions for all programs, schedules
and procedures.
G. The manual shall have separate sections for Plant Material and Irrigation Systems
Maintenance. Each section shall have 2 primary divisions covering:
a) This division shall establish guidance, criteria and procedures for the
efficient and systematic implementation of the maintenance program
and shall include, but not be limited to:
1) Description of the Project, its location, types of materials or
systems to be maintained and special conditions or notable
factors that influence the materials or systems longevity.
2) Brief, but inclusive, scope of required maintenance work.
3) Operation and maintenance organization chart, including names,
titles and detailed responsibilities, necessary to satisfactorily
accomplish the maintenance scope of work activities.
4) Records of all maintenance, repair and operation activities
throughout the maintenance period, showing the date, location
and type of work performed, all repair and replacement works,
activities and equipment relevant to the operation and
maintenance work.
5) Filing system for all maintenance documents, correspondence,
shop and vendor equipment drawings, etc.
6) Work control and reporting procedures.
A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:
1. Packing and Shipping
a) All products shall be handled with extreme care to ensure delivery to the
site in sound and undamaged condition, including no injury to the pipe
coating or lining.
f) All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for
compliance with the specifications.
g) Pipes shall be delivered with factory-applied end caps. End caps shall
be maintained through shipping, storage, and handling to prevent pipe-
end damage and to avoid entrance of dirt, debris, and moisture.
2. Storage and Protection
a) All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the
manufacturer to prevent damage and deterioration.
d) All pipes, flanges, fittings and specialties shall be stored off floor or
grade to protect them from moisture and dirt, taking into consideration
the structural capacity of the supporting floor.
e) PVC pipes shall be stacked on a flat surface free from sharp projections,
stones, or other protuberances likely to deform them.
g) PVC pipes shall be transported to the jobsite in special pile rack type
o) For pipes older than 24 months, the Royal Commission may require
information on the pipes storage during the period. The Royal
Commission reserves the right to reject pipes older than 24 months or to
require re-testing and re-certification by the pipe manufacturer.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL
A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.
B. No material shall be purchased until submitted materials list and attachments have
been approved, in writing, by the Royal Commission.
C. All irrigation equipment, fittings and accessories shall be suitably rated to comply with
the system working and test pressures for the individual equipment, fitting and
accessories.
D. All materials and products shall be new, sound and uniform in quality, size, shape,
color and texture, free from cracks, warps or other defects and shall be capable of
operating under the full range of site environmental conditions.
F. All pipe, pipe fitting material, irrigation equipment and components shall be
compatible with each other and shall be designed and manufactured for the intended
use.
H. All jointing material shall be of material, composition and size that will not damage
the pipe and shall be suitable for use at the design pressure for the pipeline.
I. Fittings shall be molded or formed to correspond in all respects with the properties of
the pipe of the corresponding size; required tees, bends, elbows, clean-outs,
reducers, traps and other configurations required.
2.02 PIPEWORK
A. General
1. Individual types of pipe, hose, and fittings supplied are to be of the same
manufacturer unless otherwise approved.
2. All pipes shall be free of blisters, internal striations, cracks, or any other
defects or imperfections.
B. Piping Material
1. Piping for irrigation lines shall be Ductile Iron, unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride
(uPVC), Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), or
Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP), as indicated on the Contract Drawings.
3. Tubing for use with drip emitters shall be of Flexible Poly Vinyl Chloride
material.
1. All uPVC pipes shall conform to the requirements of SASO 14, Class V.
2. All couplings and fittings for uPVC pipe shall be manufactured from materials
conforming to ASTM D1784, Class 12454, designated as PVC 1120 in
ASTM D1785.
b) Joints shall meet the requirements for 1034 kPa (150 psi) working
pressure, and 1379 kPa (200 psi) hydrostatic test pressure, unless
otherwise shown or specified.
a) Fittings and specials shall be of the same material as, and compatible
with the pipe used.
a) Fittings and specials shall be of the same materials as the pipe and shall
be in accordance with AWWA C900, bell end in accordance with
AWWA C110, 1034 kPa (150 psi) pressure rating except that profile of
bell may have special dimensions as required by the pipe
manufacturers.
1. All Fiber Reinforced Plastic Pipes (FRP) and their associated accessories shall
be as specified in SECTION 02086.
3. Polyethylene tubing, when used as drip lateral, shall be extruded from virgin
low density polyethylene resin, free of splits and kinks and resistant to stress
cracking and rolling.
4. Drip lateral fittings shall be of sturdy and durable construction with minimum
flow resistance. Couplings shall be of compression type. Connections of lateral
manifold shall be achieved using compression fittings or insert barbs with
external retaining clamps or collars.
J. Stakes
1. Stakes for flexible pipe shall be poly vinyl chloride or polypropylene, minimum
length 300 mm, to secure flexible pipe at proper location in planting area or
bed.

b) The sprinkler shall be designed for installation, either flush with the
ground surface, or slightly below the ground surface.
f) The sprinkler shall have such features that will enable the user to stop
the water flow through an individual sprinkler head while remainder of
the system is in operation.
h) The sprinkler shall have a thick rubber cover firmly attached to the top of
the sprinkler riser. It shall be equipped with an integral drain check
valve, to be self-closing, to prevent low head drainage.

2. The body of the bubbler shall be constructed of hard, durable, high impact,
corrosion and heat resistant plastic.
3. The discharge rate and the operating pressure shall be as indicated on the
Contract Drawings.
5. The bubbler shall have an inlet screen to protect the nozzle against clogging.
6. The Bubbler shall have a 12 mm ( in.) Female National Pipe Thread (FNPT)
inlet for connection to a 12 mm male threaded riser or standard female threads
that are compatible with the threaded riser on pop-up spray heads.
D. Emitters
400 kPa and shall have no flow emission spike at start up low pressure
of 50 kPa.
g) The emitter shall have a barbed inlet and a barbed outlet in order to
tightly hold the distribution tubing. The barbed fittings shall not be
dislodged from the tubing in the pressure range of half the minimum
operating pressure to 3 times the emitter design operating pressure.
h) The inlet barb shall be color coded for easy identification of different flow
rates.
a) The drip line shall consist of an ultra violet resistant low density linear
polyethylene tube with internal pressure compensating, continuously self
cleaning integral flat drippers welded to the inside of wall of the tube at
the specified spacing as an integral part of the tubing assembly.
d) The dripper discharge shall be 1.5, 2.3, 3.5 L/hr, utilizing a combination
turbulent flow/reduced pressure compensation cell mechanism and an
ethylene propylene diene terpolymers (EPDM) diaphragm to maintain
uniform discharge rates. It shall also be continuously self-cleaning
during operation.
A. General
2. Unless indicated otherwise, valve sizes 50 mm and smaller shall have screwed
ends and those 65 mm and larger shall have flanged ends.
3. The construction of valves shall allow for complete servicing without removing
the valve body from the line.
3. The solenoid shall be an encapsulated glass reinforced nylon, 1-piece unit with
a captive plunger and shall be mounted directly on the valve bonnet. All parts
and tubing downstream of the entrance shall be of larger size to permit
6. The valve shall be equipped with an internal filter with a self-cleaning metering
rod, so that only clean water can enter the solenoid chamber. A filter cleaning
system, that continuously cleans the filter when the valve is operating, shall be
available.
7. A flow adjustment non-rising plastic stem with cross handle shall be provided
that limits the travel of the valve plug from full closed to full open, allowing
manual closure or flow regulation. A manual control shall be provided for
operation with or without the control wiring installed. It shall have an accurate
set pressure regulator, to keep the downstream pressure constant. The
regulator shall be of the top dial model, clearly indicating the pressure values.
8. The valve shall be equipped with a manual internal bleed only, giving the
capability to release the upper chamber water to the down stream piping,
allowing the valve to open. No external bleed shall be available.
9. Construction of the valves shall be such that all operating parts are accessible
and removable from the top by removing the bonnet without having to
disconnect the valve body from the pipeline.
C. Gate Valves
1. Gate valves shall be designed for a working pressure of not less than
1034 kPa (150 psi) and water operating temperature of 45C.
2. Valve shall be the same size as the incoming line size with a clear waterway
equal to the full nominal diameter of the valve, and shall be opened by turning
counterclockwise.
3. The operating nut or wheel shall have an arrow cast in the valve indicating the
direction of opening.
4. Valves smaller than 75 mm shall be all bronze or brass, with screwed end
connections.
5. Valves 75 mm and larger shall be of cast iron or ductile iron body, bronze
mounted, with flanged end connections, conforming to AWWA C500.
1. Backflow Prevention Valve shall conform to AWWA C511 and shall be of the
reduced pressure principle type.
2. Valve shall be suitable for supply pressure up to 1034 kPa (150 psi) and shall
be the same size as of the incoming line size.
4. The operation shall be completely automatic and shall not induce water
hammer.
5. Resilient seated, tightly closing shut-off valves, fitted with properly located test
cocks to facilitate field testing, shall be provided at each end of the unit.
6. Valve shall be a standard commercially available unit. All internal parts shall be
accessible for examination, repair and replacement and shall be removable
without removing the backflow preventer from the pipeline.
7. The main valve body, cover and trim shall be bronze, and the relief valve shall
be bronze with stainless steel trim.
E. Check Valves
1. Check valves shall be used to check the return flow of water from the
secondary lines into primary lines, when the watering of the zone is stopped.
2. Check valves shall be designed for a minimum working pressure of 1034 kPa
unless otherwise indicated on the Contract Drawings.
1. Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) ball valves shall be designed for a working pressure
not less than the working pressure of class or grade of poly vinyl chloride
(PVC), unplasticized poly vinyl chloride (uPVC) or polyethylene (PE) pipe with
which they are used.
2. Ball valves shall have durable PVC body and stem with
impact resistant acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) handle, rapid on/off
control, tight shut-off and self-adjusting seals and shall have an operating
rating of 1034 kPa (150 psi).
3. Valves shall be the same size as the incoming line size with a clear waterway
equal to the full nominal diameter of the valve and shall be opened by turning
counter clockwise 90.
4. Open and shut positions must be ascertainable from the outside. The final
positions, open and shut, must be limited by a stop.
2. Vacuum and air release valves shall be of the size shown on the Contract
Drawings. The valves shall automatically release air when the lines are being
filled with water and shall admit air into the lines when water is being
withdrawn in excess of the inflow and it shall be able to release the air when
the system is under operation.
3. Valve casing and cover shall be made of glass filled nylon up to 50 mm (2 in.)
size and of ductile iron above 50 mm (2 in.) size; ductile iron to conform to
ASTM A536, Grade 60-40-18.
4. The valves shall be equipped with screw down isolation valves to permit
inspection and maintenance without opening the secondary isolation valve.
5. The seat rings shall be made of tin bronze in accordance with ASTM B30,
copper alloy 908 or similar. The valve spindle shall be of stainless steel.
6. Automatic air release valves shall be double orifice valves with both small and
large orifices and screw down isolating valves to permit inspection of the
7. The valves shall be suitable for a system working pressure of 1.75 MPa.
8. For pipeline size 200 mm diameter, and below, only air release valves shall be
installed. For pipeline size above 200 mm diameter, a combination of air
release and vacuum valves shall be installed.
9. All vacuum and air release valves shall be threaded up to 50 mm (2 in.) size
and shall be provided with flanged end connections for the sizes above 50 mm
(2 In.).
3. Valves shall be suitable for the operating pressure on the inlet side and with
outlet pressure set for as indicated on the Contract Drawings.
5. Valve bodies shall be bronze or cast iron with bronze trim. Valve stem shall be
AISI 316L stainless steel. Valve discs and diaphragms shall be synthetic
rubber. Valve seats shall be bronze. Pilot controls shall be bronze with
AISI 316L stainless steel working parts.
1. Automatic flush valves shall be installed at the end of each lateral zone in
which the drip emitters are installed, and having a flow equal to or less than
15 gpm and shall be used for temporary, automatic flushing of irrigation lateral
lines during pressurization of the system.
2. The valves shall be designed to remain in the closed position at high pressure
until line pressure drops below 55 to 69 kPa (8 to 10 psi).
3. The valves shall also be designed for easy disassembly for servicing.
5. Valve installation shall be in accordance with the details shown on the Contract
Drawings.
1. Drip solenoid valve shall be equipped with an accurate set pressure regulator,
to keep the downstream pressure constant after setting it.
2. The regulator shall be of the top dial model clearly indicating pressure values.
3. The regulator shall regulate the flow at a pressure range of 140 to 700 kPa
(20 to 100 psi).
1. Valves shall be of low pressure loss type and shall be sized and installed as
shown on the Contract Drawings.
2. Valves shall have female threads. Valve body shall be made of brass material
and shall be the 2 section type with removable upper body.
3. Valve shall be supplied with spring loaded locking cover made of thermoplastic
rubber. The cover spring shall be of stainless steel material.

M. Valve Boxes
1. General
a) All remote control valves, manual control valves, isolation valves and
water meters shall be installed in boxes.
b) The valve boxes shall provide protection for the valves and shall be of
adequate size to allow access to the valve for operation, maintenance
and repair, including enough space to allow removal of the valve and
access to the connectors on each side of the valve.
c) All boxes shall be designed for traffic services when exposed to traffic
and shall have bolted down/lockable covers of sufficient strength to
withstand all expected and foreseeable loads.
d) The box covers shall be identified with the molded mark IRRIGATION
in both Arabic and English, as shown on the Contract Drawings.
f) The valve boxes shall be provided with length and side extensions to
bring the valve box level with the finished ground level, unless otherwise
indicated.
2. Material
a) Cast iron, fiber reinforced plastic, concrete with cast iron trim, HDPE,
polyolefin plastic with ultraviolet additives, PVC or acrylonitrile butadiene
styrene (ABS), as shown on the Contract Drawings.
1) Cast iron boxes, when used, shall have screw or slide type
adjustment, flared base and shall be coated with minimum 4 mm
epoxy compound on exterior and interior surfaces.
2) The inside surfaces of fiber reinforced plastic valve boxes shall be
hard, durable, free of tackiness and free of bulges, dents, ridges
or other defects that result in an appreciable variation of inside
dimensions of the boxes.
3) PVC valve boxes shall be high impact resistant, acid resistant,
high heat resistant, self-extinguishing, hard, durable, and low
coefficient of expansion plastic material.
4) Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) valve boxes and covers
shall be self-draining and shall be used in non-traffic areas.
5) Polyolefin plastic valve boxes shall be light in weight, non-
conductive, non-sparking with reduced side angles and increased
breaking strength.
3. Color
a) The color of the plastic boxes shall be green and those of cast iron shall
be gray, unless otherwise shown on the Contract Drawings.

the double swing joint type. The flexible sprinkler connection shall be an articulated
swing joint assembly that connects to a lateral pipe and permits accurate positioning
of the sprinkler heads to variable grade levels.
B. The swing joint shall allow stable positioning of the sprinkler to grade during
installation and allow flexibility in 3 dimensions to reposition the sprinkler head.
C. The swing joint shall be suitable for 1034 kPa (150 psi) pressure rating and shall be
E. The horizontal nipples connected directly into the side outlet of the main shall be at
least 100 mm in length.
F. Risers for other application devices shall be in accordance with the pipe
specifications as specified herein.
A. Marking tape shall be of the type specifically manufactured for marking and locating
underground utilities and shall be of plastic material with integral wires, metal foil
backing, or other means to enable detection by a metal detector.
B. The tape shall not be less than 100 mm wide and shall have the phrase "Irrigation
Line Below," in Arabic and English, stamped in black letters on green background
and repeated at maximum intervals of 1 m.
C. The metallic core of the tape shall be encased in a protective plastic jacket or
provided with other means to protect it from corrosion.
A. Marker posts with indicator plates shall be provided for main lines as detailed on the
Contract Drawings.
B. Marker posts shall be provided generally not less than 200 m apart, and at all
changes in direction of main lines, adjacent to all line and outlet valves (except
solenoid valves) from the main transmission lines and at all dead ends.
2.12 FILTERS
A. Filters shall be of grooved disc design providing both surface and depth filtration in a
compact design, thus leading to bigger filtration area and giving extra protection to
the system.
B. The filtration rate of the filter shall be compatible with the irrigation system flow and
pressure and the filter shall be rated for pressure not less than 1034 kPa (150 psi).
D. The body cover and internal components shall be constructed of non-corrosive glass
reinforced nylon or equivalent. A ball valve shall be located at the end to flush the
debris held between the body and the filter element.
E. The grooved discs shall be made of highly chemical resistant polypropylene with
gaskets of ethylene propylene diene terpolymers (EPDM) and Nitrile rubber or
equivalent material.
F. The filters could have the capability to be assembled on a filter battery with automatic
backwash system controlled by a pressure differential switch. The manifold of the
battery shall be epoxy coated steel.
G. Filtration shall not be less than 120 mesh, unless otherwise indicated on the Contract
Drawings.
A. Main line piping shall have thrust blocks sized and placed as shown on the Contract
Drawings.
B. The concrete for thrust blocks shall be Class C30b in accordance with
SECTION 03310.
C. Thrust blocks shall be installed at tees, elbows, 45 crosses, reducers, plugs, caps,
and valves.
A. General
2. The controller shall have three independent programs (A, B, C) with 8 start
times per program and one program (D) that can run concurrently with the
other programs. Watering time shall be available from 1 minute to 2 hours in
1-minute increment per station in programs A, B and C and from 1 minute to
12 hours in program D.
3. The controller shall have 4 weekly schedule options to choose from: 7-day
calendar, 31-day calendar, odd days programming and even days
programming.
4. The controller shall also have a 365 days calendar clock to accommodate true
odd even watering. All programming shall be accomplished by the use of a
programming dial and selection buttons with user feed back by LCD display.
5. The controller shall have an electrical power input of 127 V nominal 5%,
60 Hz, complete with surge protector and transformer output 24 V AC, 1.5 A,
Station output 24 V AC, 0.56 A.
6. The controller shall have a seasonal adjust feature that allows for station run
times to be changed from 10 to 150% in 10% increments to compensate for
weather changes.
8. The controller shall have a cycle and soak scheduling capability that allows a
cycle to be programmed for up to 60 minutes and a soak period up to
60 minutes.
9. The controller shall be equipped with a programmable pump circuit that can
activate the pump start relay by zone.
10. The controller shall have programmable delay between valve stations. Delays
between stations shall be programmable up to a maximum of 10 hours.
11. The controller shall be compatible with a long-range, multi-site remote control
unit having signals strong enough to pass through obstructions such as
buildings, walls or trees and communicate with the controller.
12. The controller shall have a diagnostic feature which provides a Fault
message on the LCD screen, skips shorted stations and continues the
irrigation cycle while a rapid station test routine procedure enables the
controller to diagnose and trouble shoot field wiring, solenoid and controller
problems.
1. General Description
a) The irrigation central control system shall control and monitor the entire
Irrigation System.
d) If the computer goes down, the Field Interface Unit shall carry the last
updates from all sites in order to provide these data to the central

the use of any external encoders or decoders.
k) Each RTU shall have the capability to operate as a field Interface Unit
(FIU) to all other RTU in the filed where it can be directly connected to a

and make decision locally, without waiting for the central station or the

e) All input/output modules shall be plug-in type for easier installation and
maintenance. All elements used shall be solid state type where no
Jumpers or DIP switches are allowed.
g) The RTU shall be able to communicate with the central station as well
as other RTUs and Slave RTU.
h) The RTU shall be able to store and forward Data, to act as a repeater
for other RTUs in case of obstacles.
i) All communication between central station, RTU and slave RTU shall be
through Radio communication using single frequency to cover the
required range without the use of any intermediate type of
communication.
j) The communication protocol between the RTU and the Central Control
Station and other RTU shall be a solid communication protocol-allowing
real time, 2-way communication.
n) The processor module (CPU) shall be real time process controller and
shall support the Data transfer with I/O modules, system memory
allocation, and communication port protocol.
o) The CPU shall have Terminal port to receive commands from the
programming keyboard, and radio communication port for sending and
receiving data via 2-way single frequency radio and shall have a third
port that allows to connect the RTU to a computer in order to work as an
FIU hence operate as a central control station.
q) The RTUs shall carry the irrigation programs with the following minimum
capabilities and requirements per irrigation main line:
1) Control Irrigation System based on time.
2) Control Irrigation based on water quantity.
3) Control Irrigation based on fertilizer quantity.
4) Initiate alarms based on high flow, low flow, no flow, and main line
leak.
5) Control backwash of filters based on pressure differential switch.
6) Flexible programming to change valve set combinations.
7) Changing irrigation Schedule automatically based on the weather
conditions.
8) Possibility to create programs based on conditions.
9) Start/Stop main line manually or automatically.
10) Getting pump on/off status and trip status.
11) Start and Stop valves, main valves and pumps and connected
devices manually or automatically based on conditions.
12) Control irrigation based on different outputs, inputs and program
conditions.
b) The central computer shall communicate with the field RTU by means of
a Field Interface Unit (FIU).
c) The Central Control and Monitoring Program shall use a strong and
proven communication protocol to exchange Data with the FIU.
d) The Field Interface Unit shall use reliable, flexible and transparent
communication protocol to communicate with the field RTU.
e) The RTU communication protocol shall include, but not be limited to:
1) Bi-directional communication and data transfer.
2) Master-Slave reporting, two communication layers.
a) The Main Central computer shall utilize the latest available computer in
terms of speed, RAM, Hard drive, video capabilities, fax/modem, sound
blaster, monitor, color printer and other associated accessories.
d) The ICC package shall have the capability of file sharing to exchange
data with other programs to allow preparation of custom reports, data
bases and graphs.
a) The Field Interface Unit shall be of the same manufacturer as the field
RTU and shall be used to achieve the following tasks:
1) Interface the central computer with field RTU.
2) Store and process real time data from field RTU.
3) Handle the communication link with field RTU.
4) Work as RTU with all RTU capabilities.
5) Allow control and monitoring of slave RTU.
b) The Field Interface Unit shall be intelligent and smart, and shall reflect
the status of the field RTU back to the central computer.
a) The ICC Software shall be user friendly and shall have the following
minimum capabilities:
1) Support more than one project, and run more than one Field
Interface Unit.
2) Unique key registration for project location.
A. Conduits
2. Conduits shall be high impact resistant, acid resistant, high heat resistant,
made of a PVC compound with low coefficient of expansion.
B. Cables
1. Power Cables
b) The size of the control wire and common grounding wire shall be as
recommended by the control valve manufacturer, however, the size of
the control wire shall not be less than 2.5 mm2 (14 AWG).
c) The color of the control wire and common wires shall be different and
shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 WORKMANSHIP
A. All construction and installation work shall be done in a thorough and workmanlike
manner in accordance with the Contract Drawings and Specifications and shall be
subject to acceptance by the Royal Commission.
B. All works shall be performed in conformity with the best trade practices and the
printed instructions of the applicable manufacturers; by skilled workers equipped to
produce satisfactory results; in a safe, substantial manner to avoid undue stresses, to
avoid interference with work of other trades, to present a neat, orderly appearance;
and to facilitate operation, service, maintenance and repair.
C. Deviations from the Contract Drawings and Specifications shall not be allowed
except upon written approval of the Royal Commission.
3.02 INSPECTION
A. Material Inspection
1. The Contractor shall carefully inspect all products for damage immediately
before installation. Any product found to be damaged or not in accordance with
the specifications shall immediately be repaired or removed from the site and
replaced such that the execution and Contract Schedule are not impaired.
2. Any defective item discovered after the installation shall be removed and
replaced with a sound item in a satisfactory manner at no additional expense
to the Royal Commission.
B. Site Inspection
1. The Contractor shall check that the position and levels of existing drains and
services have been established and that the trench lines do not encroach on
routes of other services and obstructions.
3. The Contractor shall verify that the field measurements are as indicated on the
Contract Drawings.
4. The Contractor shall check the depth, width and pitch of the excavated
trenches prior to proceeding with installations.
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. General
1. All devices, equipment, and materials not definitely specified or noted, that are
required for complete installations, shall be manufactured for the purpose
intended and shall be installed in conformance with good accepted practice for
the conditions encountered.
2. All equipment necessary and required for the proper construction of irrigation
system shall be available on the Project, in first-class working condition and
approved by the Royal Commission before construction is permitted to start.
4. Only approved materials will be allowed on the jobsite. Any other material shall
be immediately removed from the jobsite at the Contractor's expense unless
otherwise approved by the Royal Commission.
5. The Contractor shall stake the irrigation system before the construction begins
and shall provide and fix clear, stable markers and reference points to lay the
irrigation system as accurately as possible to lines and grades established by
the Contract Drawings and Specifications, with fittings, valves, and
appurtenances shown on the approved drawings, including bolts, nuts,
gaskets, and joining materials.
7. Pipe shall not be laid in water or when trench conditions are otherwise
unsuitable for the work. Water shall be kept out of the trench until the material
in the joints has hardened or until caulking or jointing is completed.
8. Before laying, the pipes shall be carefully examined for damage, and tested for
soundness in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Damaged
coating or lining shall be made good or the material discarded as directed by
the Royal Commission.
9. Dirt and foreign matter shall be removed before lowering and the construction
debris shall be cleared from the inside of the pipe before jointing.
10. Pipes shall be laid on an even formation, true to grade, and in line with sockets
(where applicable) facing up the gradient. Bedding shall be scooped out locally
to allow proper jointing and for the barrel of each pipe to bear evenly on solid
ground over its full length.
11. When work is not in progress, open ends of pipe, fittings, and valves shall be
securely closed so that no substance will enter the pipes or fittings. Pipe ends
left for future connections shall be valved, plugged or capped, and anchored,
as shown or as directed.
12. Pipes shall not be lowered into trench until the pipe bed has been brought to
correct grade and approved. Pipe that has the grade or joint disturbed after
laying shall be taken up and re-laid.
13. All excavated material shall be piled in a manner that will not endanger the
work and that will avoid obstructing sidewalks and driveways. Any material not
used for backfill shall be removed from the site. Gutters shall be kept clean or
otherwise satisfactory provisions made for street drainage.
14. Excavation for pipe laying operations shall be conducted in a manner to cause
the least interruption to traffic. Where traffic must cross open trenches, the
Contractor shall provide suitable bridges at street intersections and driveways.
Appropriate traffic-control devices shall be provided to regulate, warn, and
guide traffic at the work site.
15. During excavation, material suitable for backfilling shall be piled in an orderly
manner at sufficient distance from the bank of the trench to avoid overloading
and to prevent slides or cave-ins.
16. All excavated materials not required or suitable for backfilling shall be removed
and disposed of as directed by the Royal Commission.
17. Temporary piping, valves, meters, gages and equipment required for the
hydrostatic testing shall be installed in accordance with the approved Working
Drawings.
18. All products shall be installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturers
instructions and Contract Drawings.

2. Drip Lines
b) Drip lines shall be carefully uncoiled and laid in position without kinking.
Any kinked section shall be cut from the line and subsequently rejoined
with a line joiner section.
d) Drip lines shall be laid on the ground surface for a minimum of 48 hours
prior to the installation of irrigation emitters or stakes.
e) After this minimum period, the drip lines shall be realigned and secured
to the ground with stakes at 5 m intervals.
1. Sprinkler heads and quick coupling valves shall be installed in accordance with
the manufacturers instructions and as indicated on the Contract Drawings.

b) The Contractor may find that during establishment and maintenance, the
schedule has to be modified to achieve a correct irrigation regime in
accordance with good horticultural practice.
4. Valve Boxes
c) Top of all boxes shall be set flush with finished grade and as detailed in
a neat and orderly fashion.
g) Valve boxes will not rest on, or come in contact with valve, piping, hose
or conduit.
2. Rain sensors shall be located in a position where rain will freely fall on the
equipment, but shall not be affected by irrigation water.

c) All electrical connections shall be made with specified material and all
electrical metallic enclosures and equipment shall be grounded in
accordance with SECTION 16060.
d) Specified wire markers shall be secured on each end of all wires, clearly
indicating circuit number or function.
2. Power Wiring
a) All wiring entering the controller enclosure, valve and electrical boxes
shall be installed as per the manufacturer's recommendations.
b) Direct burial of low voltage control wire shall be made in the same
trench as irrigation piping wherever possible. Multi-runs of cables shall
be tied together at 1 m intervals using PVC tape and clipped to the
water pipe at 2 m regular intervals using plastic straps.
f) Low voltage control wires located with other than irrigation piping shall
be installed in non-metallic PVC concrete encased duct.
g) To allow full flexibility of the system, each valve shall have a separate
control cable so that any valve sequence control may be re-adjusted.
4. Wiring under streets, driveways and other vehicular areas, and under walks,
plazas and other hardscaped areas shall be installed in underground ducts as
specified in SECTION 16120.
g) In paved area, top of box shall be set flush with the finished paved
A. Piping for the main irrigation system shall be installed with a minimum cover of
900 mm.
B. Unless indicated otherwise, irrigation piping from the solenoid valve boxes to the
irrigation terminal equipment shall have the following minimum burial depth:
1. 300 mm for lateral lines serving emitters, bubblers, and larger spray or
sprinkler heads.
3.05 SLEEVING
A. All main and lateral irrigation lines beneath hardscaping, walls, vehicular paving or
other similar areas shall be sleeved. Sleeves shall be concrete encased under
vehicular pavement as specified in SECTION 02585.
B. Sleeves shall be of adequate size to accommodate retrieval for repair of piping and
shall extend at least 1 m beyond the edges of the paving or other construction.
C. Sleeves shall be straight run without angles, elevation changes, or other obstructions
that would prohibit removal of the irrigation lines for maintenance.
D. All sleeves shall be of same depth as corresponding irrigation line or conduit going
through the sleeves.
E. Unless otherwise indicated, all sleeves shall be 2 nominal sizes larger than the
irrigation pipe/hose passing through the sleeve.
A. Gravity or force main sewer lines shall not be placed in the same trench with the
irrigation water lines.
B. There shall be no physical connection between an irrigation water line and a sewer
line or appurtenance which would permit the passage of any untreated sewage, or
polluted water supply into the irrigation water supply.
C. Where the location of the irrigation line is not clearly defined in dimensions on the
Contract Drawings, the irrigation line shall not be laid horizontally closer than 3 m
from a sewer. However, where the bottom of the irrigation line will be at least 0.3 m
above the top of the sewer pipe, the irrigation line shall not be laid closer horizontally
than 1.5 m from the sewer.
D. Where irrigation lines cross under gravity-flow sewer lines, the sewer pipe for a
distance of at least 3 m each side of the crossing shall be fully encased in concrete
or shall be made of pressure pipe with no joint located within 1 m horizontally of the
crossing.
E. Irrigation lines shall, in all cases, cross above sewage force mains or inverted
siphons and shall be not less than 0.6 m above the sewer main. Joints in the sewer
main, closer horizontally than 1 m to the crossing, shall be encased in concrete.
C. The inside cover of each valve box shall be painted with the same identifying
numbers using bright yellow epoxy paint.
D. All Field Controllers shall be identified by affixing a brass tag with the number of the
controller to the case, base, or pedestal in a permanent fashion.
E. All identifying numbers shall be consistent with like designations indicated on the
controller schedule.
F. Charts indicating the schedules for equipment lubrication, maintenance and essential
operating instructions shall be prepared, mounted on protected wooden plaques or
approved equivalent, covered with heat bonded clear plastic laminate or framed
under glass. These charts shall be permanently fixed at the approved locations.
A. The Contractor shall carryout general inspections both during the progress of works
and after the complete installation. These inspections shall include, but not be limited
to, checking:

1. General
b) All tests shall be carried out in the presence of the Royal Commission.
The Contractor shall give 48 hours notice prior to the anticipated date of
testing.
d) When testing the irrigation lines from the valves, the sprinklers and other
discharge devices shall be replaced with temporary plugs or caps.
f) Ends of the test sections shall be securely plugged and strutted. Ends of
the risers shall be plugged and all air purged.
g) Fittings and joints shall be permanently anchored before testing and left
exposed for checking.
h) Tests shall be made only after completion of the above operations and
not until at least 7 days after the last concrete thrust anchor block has
been cast.
i) The Contractor shall supply all testing material and equipment, including
all caps, valves, pumps, tanks and gages, as required.
2. Testing Procedure
a) The section of the main pipeline to be tested shall be filled with potable
water and all air shall be expelled.
b) After the main pipeline has been completely filled, the pressure shall be
steadily and gradually increased until the specified test pressure has
been reached.
f) All testing shall comply with AWWA C600 for ductile iron water mains
and their appurtenances and AWWA M23 for polyvinyl chloride pipes.
g) A graph shall be produced showing water input against time and the test
shall run until the graph curve flattens out.
i) During the tests, all exposed couplings, fittings and valves shall be
carefully examined for defects and leakage.
1. The tests as specified above shall be repeated for the entire network after the
pipelines have been backfilled, cleaned and inspected.
2. Each test shall be restricted to pipes of one class and particular care shall be
taken to isolate air valves, etc., not to apply higher pressure than specified at
any point on the pipeline and to ensure that the pipelines are adequately
anchored before any test is carried out.
C. Test Results
1. Upon completion of the tests, written records of every test clearly identifying
the tested section of the pipe together with time of test and name of testing
engineer in tabulated format shall be submitted for review and approval of the
Royal Commission.
3.10 FLUSHING
A. On completion of the system tests, the system shall be thoroughly flushed, the
velocity of water being at least 1 m/s.
B. Should the main water supply be unavailable or inadequate for this purpose at the
time of flushing then a swab of adequate size construction shall be used to remove
all foreign matter in the pipeline. This process shall continue until the pipeline is
completely clean.
C. Each control valve shall be opened separately and the terminal systems also
thoroughly flushed.
D. After completion of flushing, the sprinkler heads, emitters and other discharge
devices shall be fitted.
A. After the completion of the hydrostatic test and installation of emitters, bubblers and
sprinkler heads, the system shall be tested to demonstrate functional efficiency.
C. All sprinkler heads shall be adjusted to ensure proper coverage of grassed areas as
shown on the Contract Drawings with no wetting of adjoining hard surfaces.
D. The Contractor shall balance and adjust the various components of the irrigation
system so that the overall operation of the system is effective. Balancing and
adjustment shall include:
A. Upon completion of the construction and Initial Acceptance, the Contractor shall
operate and maintain irrigation system for duration of 104 weeks, unless otherwise
indicated.
B. The Contractor shall make periodic inspections and adjustments to irrigation system
components, as discussed herein, to achieve the most desirable application of water.
A. Bound instructions, shall be supplied with explanatory tables and graphs which
include operational data, controller schedule, peak flow diagram, total flow rate in
each header system, the maximum and minimum allowable pressure downstream
from filters, valves and pressure regulators, schematic diagram of valves within the
served areas and maintenance data, such as preventive action for avoiding emitter
clogging, the method of cleaning or replacing emitters, instructions on spare parts
storage, list of acceptable injected chemicals, and system flushing procedures.
A. Maintenance Practices
a) Soil Fertilization
1) A systematic method of testing and amending soil in all planted
areas shall be established by the Contractor and shall be
approved by the Royal Commission.
2) A complete soil analysis of all planted areas shall be made prior to
Initial and Final Acceptance by an approved soil testing
laboratory.
3) The laboratory shall provide recommendations for the required
corrective actions and the soil amendments required shall be
incorporated into the soil fertilization program prior to Initial and
Final Acceptance.
4) Soil samples shall be taken at distance intervals of not less than
one complete test per 500 m2 of surface area of planting soil
installed.
5) Based upon the established testing program, the following soil
amendments are to be incorporated into the soil fertilization and
amendment program.
(a) Organic fertilizers.
(b) Chemical fertilizers.
(c) Trace elements.
b) Pruning
1) A systematic pruning program shall be developed and
implemented to:
(a) Reduce the plant size and organize its form to suit the
purpose of its plantation.
(b) Get rid of unwanted growth.
(c) Remove diseased, dry, and dead branches.
(d) Assist in making the sunlight reach all parts of the plants in
order to encourage flower blooming.
2) Pruning requirements shall be detailed on a species by species
basis and in accordance with the use and location of the specific
plant material.
3) It is prohibited to prune the plants without obtaining the Royal
Commission approval about the trimming timing and method.
4) Specific emphasis shall be placed on tree pruning to guarantee
the establishment of strong and well-balanced secondary
branching system.
5) Diagrams of pruning locations of typical branching patterns shall
be provided as guidance for field personnel.
d) Replacement of Plants
1) The replacement of plants means changing the dead, weak, bent,
or slow growing plants with similar types of plants or any other
type agreed on by the Royal Commission.
e) Tumbling
1) Tumbling operation is turning over the soil around the roots and
airing it and removing accumulations and leftovers.
2) A systematic program for the tumbling operations shall be
developed and implemented. This operation shall occur every
60 days in the following manner:
(a) The turning over shall be performed in the upper level in
order not to hurt the roots.
(b) The leftover and accumulated material shall be removed
before tumbling.
(c) The soil shall be left without watering for 2 days after the
soil turning over for the purpose of airing it.
(d) The decayed plants shall be removed during the tumbling
operation.
g) Insect Control
1) A specific insect control program shall be developed and
implemented for each type of prevalent insect pest recognized as
detrimental to plant materials throughout all landscaped areas.
2) This program shall encompass daily, weekly and monthly,
systematic application of a variety of chemical controls necessary
to ensure optimum appearance health and growth of all plant
materials.
h) Disease Control
1) A specific disease control program shall be implemented for each
type of prevalent disease, fungus or virus recognized as
detrimental to plant materials throughout all landscaped areas.
2) This program shall encompass daily, weekly and monthly
applications of chemical control methods necessary to ensure
optimum appearance and growth of all plant materials.
i) Soil Washing
1) A specific soil washing program shall be established to dissolve
precipitation salt as a result of spray or drip watering.
2) This operation shall be performed by overflowing the soil with
clean washing water for a few days till the precipitation salt is
removed.
3) This operation shall be performed every 2 months in case of using
the spraying or the dripping water system, appearance of salt in
the soil, and when required by the Royal Commission.
A. General
2. The Contractor shall fully develop detailed tasks, requirements and specific
practices to accomplish each procedure and efficiently maintain the irrigation
system in dependable working condition.
4. This work includes, but is not limited to, routine preventive maintenance and
emergency services which include the repair or replacement of malfunctioning
portions of the systems, including pumps, electrical components, filters and all
other irrigation system components, both hardline and softline, and
reprogramming and adjusting automatic controllers as necessary.
1. Inspection
a) All distribution mains, laterals and lines shall be inspected regularly for
signs of leakage.
b) The inspection shall comprise walking the route of mains and carefully
examining the surface of the ground for evidence of leakage from the
main. Also examine inside of all valve boxes.
c) Not less than every 3 months each installed valve on the mains shall be
inspected, test operated to see that it closes and opens correctly and,
while closed, it shall be sounded for signs of by-passing water.
e) A weekly report form shall record all sections of inspections and their
results.
1. The Contractor shall perform the periodical maintenance of the emitters for the
following to:
c) Disconnect the emitter from the main watering tube and then wash the
emitter with clean water and to remove the salt settled on it.
f) Be sure of the work accuracy and the quantity of water coming out of
each emitter.
2. All plant material shall be visually inspected on a weekly basis for signs of
water stress due to lack of water, or ponding from over-watering, while the
system is in operation to ensure none are blocked and are giving out water as
per their design.
3. Any blocked outlet shall be cleaned or, if cleaning is not possible, the defective
emitter shall be replaced.
4. The operation of the control solenoid valves under remote signal shall be
checked by manual operation of the control panels and by operation of the
manual bleed screws on the valves.
6. Irrigation drip tube lines shall be inspected for splits, cuts or blockage and shall
be repaired with joiner sections or replaced.
8. All isolation valves shall be visually inspected for leakage around stems and
glands replaced, if required. All valves shall be operated and returned to
normal position.
9. Locks, hinges, etc., on valve access covers and control panel boxes, etc., shall
be oiled or greased as required by manufacturer's instructions.
2. All sprinkler and spray heads shall be visually inspected on a weekly basis and
any defective heads shall be serviced to manufacturer's instructions.
3. The filter shall be cleaned on a weekly basis to preserve water and to ensure
that the sprinklers and sprays shall last longer.
4. Solenoid valves shall be checked and Y strainers shall be cleaned as for drip
irrigation systems.
6. All valves shall be checked at 2 month intervals as for drip irrigation systems.
E. Control Systems
G. Hand-Watering
a) Respond to, and repair, failures of, or damage to, any portion of an
irrigation system, including but not limited to, service-lines and
accessories (zone control valves, emitter control valves, quick coupler
valves, pumps, fittings, etc.) on a 24 hour emergency or stand-by basis.
A. During the performance of the work, the Contractor shall maintain and update the
Maintenance Manual.
B. Since this Manual will be used by the Contractor for managing and controlling all
activities, all information contained in the Manual must be kept current.
C. Minor changes shall be submitted monthly, and any major or significant changes
shall be submitted whenever they occur.
E. Using the approved maintenance recording forms from the Maintenance Manual, the
Contractor shall maintain a log of all maintenance activities performed during the
Maintenance and Warranty Period.
F. Copies of all forms and entries shall be submitted to the Royal Commission on a
monthly basis.
3.17 PROTECTION
A. The completed sections of the irrigation system shall be protected from damage by
the construction traffic and the work of the other trades.
A. Upon completion of the installation and repair work, the damaged paving, curbs, etc.,
or other disturbed surfaces and structures shall be restored and replaced to the
satisfaction of the Royal Commission.
B. All surplus pipeline materials, tools and temporary structures shall be removed.
C. All dirt, rubbish, and excess excavated material shall be removed and disposed of to
the approved damping areas, and the construction site shall be cleaned to the
satisfaction of the Royal Commission.
