W
e tell a lot of stories in Cleaner. We give you glimpses inside a
lot of businesses and the lives of their owners. But when the
story is over, regardless of what you or I take from it, we all
move on.
So often the company owners and managers featured in our contractor
profiles talk about their plans for the future services theyd like to add,
growth and expansion, other company initiatives but we rarely have the
opportunity to find out how those plans have played out. We share success
stories and insights from the path to success, and Id like to start taking you
a little further down that path.
We profiled C&L Water Solutions of Littleton, Colorado, in our February
issue. Its a great story about the next generation taking over a family business
and pushing it to new levels. That story started with a phone call, but I didnt
make the call. I was sitting at my desk one day when the phone rang. Larry
Larson, the founder of C&L, was on the line wanting to discuss a column Id
written about the growth and significance of trenchless technologies.
I always like hearing from readers. I especially like it when my column
can facilitate some discussion. Larry and I had a nice conversation, and it led
to the C&L profile in February. Like a lot of the contractors we profile, I talk
to them but never get to meet them face to face.
Fortunately, I had the chance to meet Larry in person at this years
WWETT Show in Indianapolis. It was a great opportunity to learn more
about him and his company, and to get some feedback on the story we wrote.
More than anything, its just great to establish a personal connection.
Had we not met, I wouldnt have learned the most fascinating part of
the story beyond the story: In the four months since wed done that initial

interview, the company grew from 49 to 80 employees. Very few companies
could foster the kind of growth that would necessitate nearly doubling the
workforce in such a short period of time. Even fewer could do it successfully.
But thats exactly what C&L has done.
And how did they do it? By offering a bounty. Any employee who brought
in a new employee was rewarded. So not only did the ranks grow, they grew
with good, qualified people. Youll probably be reading about that hiring feat
in a future issue. And youll be able to read about the companys growth and
progress at Cleaner.com. Theres more to the story, and were going to bring
it to you.
Were going to be revisiting some other profiles as well, so you can see
how the plans and predictions of the contractors youve read about have
panned out. Itll all be online, so you can find out whats new, whats gone
right and wrong and revisit the original stories if you like.

Start saving for your childrens higher education now
so you can spare them massive debt in the future

ouve just welcomed a new child into the family? Congratulations!
Time to start saving for college.
Thats no joke. As the cost of higher education keeps rising,
the best way to prepare is to put aside money as soon as you can.
You dont want to saddle your youngster 20 years from now with mountains
of debt just when she or he has that diploma and is heading out to take on
the world.
Fortunately, there are tools to help both sources for practical advice
as well as financial instruments that help you save while giving you some tax
benefits for doing so.
And if college isnt so far away for that youngster, you want to get started
even faster.
The money you pay into a Section 529 plan
is not tax deductible, but the earnings in the
plan are tax-free, and if you spend the money
on college education or the equivalent,
you wont pay federal income taxes
on it when you withdraw it.
WHATS EXPECTED
Its wonderful to imagine that Junior will get a free ride to Harvard on
the strength of her brilliant intellect (or an athletic scholarship thanks to
her brilliant soccer goaltending). But just as you dont plan for retirement by
buying lottery tickets, you dont want to depend on luck to cover the cost
of college.
There are other forms of financial aid besides academic or athletic
scholarships, but most are based on need. The federal government is the
largest single source of financial aid through a variety of grants and loan
programs. To qualify, youll have to complete a standard form that discloses
not just your annual income but the assets you and your child own: the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA for short.
So Step One is to go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to get a general idea of what
you will be expected to contribute toward the childs college education.
The younger your children are, of course, the more likely it is that specific
requirements might change by the time they reach college age.
For now, though, here are some basic rules of thumb:
The larger your asset pool, the larger your familys expected financial
contribution EFC for short.

The equity in your home is not counted as an asset on the FAFSA
application. (Other scholarship programs might include it, though, so
youll need to be prepared for that possibility.)
Generally, your childs assets count more than yours so its wise to
keep more of your assets in your name.
A business at least 50 percent owned and controlled by your family,
and employing fewer than 100 full-time employees (or the equivalent)
does not count as an asset on the FAFSA (see fafsa.ed.gov/help/
fotw44eF4c.htm).
Investment holdings such as mutual funds in a tax-sheltered retirement
account also do not count as an asset but other investments that
arent part of a retirement plan do count.
SECTION 529 PLANS
The single most useful instrument to help you save for college is the
Section 529 plan. Created in 1996 as part of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code,
these accounts let you save for college on behalf of your child or grandchild,
if thats your stage in life while providing tax advantages along the way.
Almost every state has at least one Section 529 plan (some have two or
more). An excellent clearinghouse for information on Section 529 plans is
at SavingforCollege.com. There you can look up plans in each state and see
rankings that compare their investment performance.
The money you pay into a Section 529 plan is not tax deductible, but
the earnings in the plan are tax-free, and if you spend the money on college
education or the equivalent, you wont pay federal income taxes on it when
you withdraw it.
On the other hand, if the money goes to nonqualified expenses, the
earnings will be taxed upon withdrawal. Not only that, but there also will be
a 10 percent tax penalty on top of that.
But what if your child doesnt want to go to college or does get that
rare free ride?
No worries. You can switch the plan beneficiary to another child one
of your other children or a grandchild, for example.
STATE FLEXIBILITY
As a general rule, a states Section 529 plans dont limit your child to
going to school only in that state. They also dont limit you only to a public
institution.
You also dont have to choose one of the plans in your home state. As
SavingforCollege.com points out, you can live in one state, choose a Section
529 plan from another state, and use the plan to fund your childs college
education in a third state.
 More than 30 states give their own taxpayers a tax break on contributions
to the plans in their state. If you arent a resident of the state whose Section 529
plan you pick, you probably wont get that advantage. Youll want to consider
whether the trade-off is worth it considering the investment performance of
various plans.

WHOSE ASSETS?
Remember, your assets are treated differently than your childrens assets
when it comes to evaluating how much financial aid they will be eligible for.
In calculating the expected family contribution, only 5.64 percent of
a parents assets are counted. Thats true even if youve actually named the
child as the beneficiary of the plan youre still in control.
By contrast, the same calculations count 20 percent of assets that the
child holds directly, such as through a custodial account to which she or he
gains control upon reaching legal age. To preserve your options for financial
aid, keep your assets under your control; dont pass them on to your child.
That also ensures you control what the money is spent on.
Student income, by the way, is counted at an even higher rate 50
percent. And that leads to another wrinkle
Remember the part about grandparents being able to open a Section 529
plan for their grandchildren? When that happens, everyone needs to think
strategically about when those funds are distributed.
Thats because the money from the plan the grandparents set up gets
treated as income for the student when its withdrawn. So the childs financial
aid eligibility is reduced by the equivalent of half of that amount.
The solution? Have the grandparents contribution kick in for the last
year of college when it wont have any effect on future financial aid eligibility.

SET EXPECTATIONS
The last piece of advice here is more philosophical than anything else:
Decide early what you expect your children to do when it comes to saving
for college.
Will your children work while still in high school? If so, will you require
them to save at least a portion of those earnings for college?
Then make it clear what the rules of the road are, and stick to your plan.
Its well known that the jobs of the future will depend more and more on
advanced education beyond high school, whether through a four-year degree
or through some alternative forms of training.
So when the time comes for your children to take that next step, theres
no better gift you can give than to make sure they can focus on their studies
instead of having to worry about how they, or you, will pay for them. C

T
welve years of service with other companies gave Austin Taylor a strong foundation in the plumbing and drain cleaning
business. When he earned his master plumbers license, he knew he had something else to prove.
Taylor was introduced to plumbing while working at a Boy Scouts of America facility and decided it would be a way
to earn a good living. He worked for three plumbing firms, including two franchises, and gained significant experience
and knowledge. Eventually he became a continuing education instructor, which provided exposure to more industry
professionals along with opportunities for his own growth.
As I worked in other companies I began to realize it would be a challenge for me to own my own firm, Taylor says.

I figured I had to prove that I could do this. I needed to get out and give it a
shot. I wanted to control my own destiny.
Before he started his own business, he worked for both large and small
companies, and observed management on both levels. He also had the
opportunity to work in the field with a wide range of equipment, adding to
his skills and understanding of the profession.
In preparation for opening his own firm, Taylor joined online plumbing
forums and began talking to other owners, picking their brains as to what it
takes to start a business. He learned from their mistakes and challenges, and
gained insight on pricing and costs.
Taylor opened Dynamic Drains of Texas in April 2014, operating out of
his home with one service van. In the first year, sales totaled just $18,000,
but growth came quickly. Sales jumped to $113,000 in 2015, and reached
$213,000 in 2016. He anticipates an even greater increase in 2017 after hiring
a technician and helper, and putting a second service van on the road.
LAYING THE GROUND WORK
From the start, Taylor has focused on service and repair work in the
residential and light commercial market. He started with a full complement of
equipment, including a RIDGID camera and a Spartan cart jetter.
He knew what he wanted out of his equipment, and he knew from
experience as both an operator and manager how the business should operate.
I learned you better know your numbers, he says. You better be
charging accordingly or you will not succeed. It is expensive to do it the right
way. I learned the importance of a professional appearance and customer
relations. Not just a uniform, but how you present yourself the use of shoe
covers, the way you talk and those things.
I worked for a while in a small company, and the owner was not keen
on buying new equipment. He preferred to repair. In my opinion it would not
operate as well as new equipment. I cannot stand rigged-up equipment on the
job. Its more dangerous and ends up costing more time. Trying to save money
doesnt always pay off. This is something I do differently.
Before starting his own company, Taylor had the opportunity to film some
videos that he now uses as a tool to educate current and future customers.
I use it as a means of demonstrating to a customer while on a job
the benefits of hydrojetting and how their drain system works. I also used
it to assist with internet presence in general, being that Google owns
YouTube. I uploaded various videos of before and after jetting along with one
demonstrating trenchless pipe bursting technology, and one where we found
and retrieved a customers wedding ring. Being it was free, I saw no reason I
shouldnt use it to help promote my company in the future.
BUILDING THE BASE
Upon opening his business in the small community of Brenham,
Texas, Taylor began knocking on doors and doing the requisite groundwork
establishing contacts with light commercial establishments. It paid off from
the get-go.

I pounded the pavement, he says. I went in and talked to
the owners of small restaurants. I would be thanked for coming in.
I was told that no one had ever come in to solicit business. They
had work for me and then I did work for their employees. This
developed good working relationships.
He also contacted other plumbing contractors who didnt
offer certain services such as jetting, drain cleaning and video
inspection, and developed business on that front.
He joined the chamber of commerce, and attended many
dinners and functions, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, joined the
Elks Lodge and took part in many events.

small town you are not always quickly accepted. You have to show
you are part of the community and want to give, not take from the
community. Besides, I had more time than money.
Taylor says it was helpful that his father-in-law was a well-
known lawyer in Brenham, but notes that it was his own efforts
that led to his success.

FINDING A NICHE
Taylor operates in about a 60-mile radius that encompasses
College Station and other small cities. The sewer systems are
composed of a variety of pipes with issues typical to older systems.
They see a lot of cast iron, but also clay, concrete and Orangeburg,
plus thin-wall PVC. Lines are typically shallow, from 2 to 3 feet
deep, and they hand-dig when excavation is required.

MANNING THE HELM

As an employer and business owner, Austin Taylor can look back on those times when he was an employee and didnt always understand
the actions of a business owner or boss. Now with the responsibility on his own shoulders he can better realize why some actions are
necessary.
I try to pay attention to the things that motivate my employees, and any training or explaining as to what or why we do things a certain
way, he says. I try to pay well, as that is the main motivator. I dont want to put an employee down, but keep the job enjoyable and take into
account what they know and not drive them beyond their capabilities.
Moving forward, Taylor would like to establish two divisions within his company, one for plumbing and another for drain cleaning and
repair.
He finds that promoting his business, developing new skill sets and learning how to run a plumbing company is much more satisfying
than working in the field.
As for myself, I plan to continue my own education, working with my employees and growing the company.

 EQUIPPED FOR THE FUTURE
The business sorts out to about 70 percent residential, with the balance
in light commercial. They serve several restaurants, and a chicken processing
plant as well. About half the work is drain cleaning and the other half is basic
plumbing.
Good work requires the right equipment, and Taylors tools of choice

inventory of water heaters or other large fixtures. When plumbing projects (See ad page 92)
require such items, Taylor directs the customer to a local supply house with
a large variety of inventory. The customer picks out what works for their
home, and Taylor picks it up and does the installation charging only for
the service and pickup.
Working with the supply house has also helped generate referrals. The
supply house will suggest Dynamic Drains for repair, and in return they send
customers to the supply house.
The company took a significant step toward further growth when a local
plumbing company decided to sell and move out of the area. Taylor purchased
its phone lists, which led to an immediate jump in business and prompted
the hiring of two more people.

That really helped me, he says. This was a friend of mine. He warned
me You had better be ready to handle the work. Thats when I hired Adam
Cunningham, a young man I had known and had wanted to bring into my
company. I couldnt meet all the calls for about a month until he was on
board. We took care of calls and then ordered the second van and brought in
a helper for him as well.
Taylor has criteria for bringing in new technicians. He looks for a self-
motivated individual, eager to learn, clean-cut, and wanting to improve
someone who can see plumbing as a career.

Devastating Losses
Cyber insurance can protect your small business from the growing threat of malicious hacking

D
ata breaches and hacked accounts are big problems associated with
big companies like Yahoo, Home Depot and Target because those
are the cases that get media attention. Small businesses however,
are not immune.
A 2015 study by the independent research organization Ponemon
Institute and IBM found companies with fewer than 10,000 records are more
likely to be hacked than those with more than 100,000 records, probably
because smaller businesses are viewed as easy marks, with less-sophisticated
cyber security technology. A Fortune 500 company has more resources to
shore up firewalls than a mom-and-pop shop, and thieves are opportunists if
nothing else.
GONE PHISHING
How are small businesses being hacked? In a 2016 Internet Security
Threat Report, cyber security company Symantec says businesses with 250 or
fewer employees are often recipients of fraudulent emails whose senders aim
to steal financial information. Known as phishing, this practice targeted small
businesses 43 percent of the time in 2015 a 9 percent increase over 2014.
The report notes that in 2011 only 18 percent of attacks focused on small
businesses, so its clear how fast the risk is growing.
Cyber liability insurance makes sense if a
business stores or transmits sensitive third-party
information like credit card numbers, Social
Security numbers, bank account numbers, etc.,
which is just about any business that accepts
credit cards, pays bills or processes payroll.
Symantec also reports about 1 in 40 small businesses are at risk of being
the victim of a cyber crime. Within a targeted business, hackers will go after
the email of employees with access to company finances. A malicious email
opened by an employee who pays vendors or processes payroll, for example,
could put financial information at risk, allowing hackers access to funds as
well as personal employee, vendor and client information.
Criminals can use hacked information to remove money from bank
accounts through wire transfers, steal customers identity information, file for
fraudulent tax refunds, or commit health insurance fraud. Cyber crooks can
even use one small business website to hack other small businesses.
Adding to the bad news, ransomware attacks are also increasing. This

type of malware is used to freeze data or an entire computer network in order
to extort money from a company. Hackers demand payment in exchange for
a decryption key. Payment demands range from a few hundred to several
thousand dollars.
PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS
So how can a small business be protected? First, try to reduce risk as
much as possible. Make sure all employees are smart about passwords, and
monitor who has access to critical files. Once youve identified and reduced
risk, the next step may be insurance.
Of course, if fire is a possible threat to a business, one purchases fire
insurance. If water is the threat, theres flood insurance. Today, its a sign
of the times that companies are offering cyber insurance, but many small-
business owners dont purchase it because they mistakenly assume any loss
caused by computer glitches or hacking are covered by traditional insurance
policies. What many find out too late however, is that commercial property
insurance and business liability insurance policies dont cover cyber liability,
and the costs can be astronomical.
The price of a data breach includes financial reimbursement of stolen
money, legal fees if lawsuits have resulted from the breach, and the cost
of compliance with breach notification statutes. It can also be costly to
identify what caused the breach and come up with solutions to keep it from
happening again.
ASSESS YOUR RISK
Cyber liability policies may be offered by the insurance company already
providing your business liability coverage, so that may be a smart place to
start shopping, especially since having more than one policy with a company
can mean qualifying for a discount.
If youre still not sure this specialized insurance is necessary, take stock
of your business. Cyber liability insurance makes sense if a business stores
or transmits sensitive third-party information like credit card numbers,
Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, etc., which is just about
any business that accepts credit cards, pays bills or processes payroll. A good
cyber liability policy will pay for damages associated with a breach including
breach notification expenses, credit-monitoring fees, security investigation
and repair, and cyber extortion expenses. Some of these are costs you
probably never even thought about unless youve experienced a breach.
Another factor to consider is that as more and more companies safeguard
themselves against cyber crime, they are becoming pickier about who they do
business with. You may start to see big companies requiring proof of cyber
liability insurance before agreeing to conduct business with you.

Cyber liability insurance rates vary depending on several factors including
the type of industry, size of the company and amount of risk. Youll get added
protection and may qualify for lower rates if youve put some effort into beefing
up your network security.
This is similar to how owning a car with a good safety rating can lower
auto insurance premiums. It can be as simple as improving firewalls, adopting
better password practices companywide, training employees to identify and
ignore phishing emails, and limiting the number of employees with access to
sensitive information.
Christine Marciano, president of Cyber Data Risk Managers, an insurance
agency specializing in cyber liability, put together a sampling of what clients
pay for premiums. While premiums will vary widely, from hundreds to many
thousands of dollars, one of her examples that might be close to a sewer and
drain contractor would be a doctors office with $700,000 in annual revenues
and a premium of $649.
While shopping around for cyber liability coverage, keep in mind that
while no business owner looks forward to spending more to add insurance,
the National Small Business Association technology survey reports the average
cost of a cyber attack reported by small businesses that were targeted in 2013
was $8,699. That kind of unplanned and unwanted expense can cause serious
financial problems for any small business. C

Darrin Black has parlayed his one-man

shop into a company with eight locations
in West Texas on the strength of one basic
operating philosophy: Invest in as many
different kinds of equipment as possible.
The way the 51-year-old master plumber sees it, the more kinds
of equipment his company owns, the more services he can offer. And
the more services he can offer, the more likely it is that he can get
a foot in the door with customers. And if he provides great service
along the way, those customers will call again when they
need something else.
Black had no grandiose plans of becoming a regional
player in the plumbing and drain cleaning market when he
founded Black Plumbing in Abilene, Texas, in 1994. Since
profile
then, the company has evolved from primarily doing drain
cleaning and plumbing installations and service work to a
well-diversified firm that also does sewer inspections, water
jetting, pipe lining, hydroexcavating and pipe bursting.
The approach, combined with a keen eye toward marketing
and branding that includes distinctive, camouflage-wrapped service
trucks and advertising via billboards, radio and television, has served
Black well. As a result, the once-tiny company has now amassed a
fleet of equipment including 25 service trucks, trackhoes, trailer
jetters, a CCTV camera truck and various inspection camera systems
thats worth about $2 million.
Were not your normal plumbing and drain cleaning company,
says the plain-spoken Black. Sure, we do regular jobs every day,
but were always bringing in more services and more technology
offering more to everybody out there.
My philosophy is that if you dont offer that one service that a
certain customer might need, you wont get your foot in the door
theyll just call someone else, he continues. And if you dont offer
all those services, eventually someone else will. So why shouldnt it
be us?

As a case in point, Black points to a large

pipe lining job his company performed at a
local U.S. Air Force base, using cured-in-place
pipe technology. After the company proved its
mettle, about $750,000 in additional work soon
followed. Had we not offered CIPP, we wouldnt
have worked there at all, he notes. But once we
were on site, it was more convenient for them to
let us do the additional work.
Theres another reason for his multiservice
mindset: The bigger the company gets, the more
obligation he feels to provide ongoing work for
his 56 employees and the families they support.
Or as he puts it, Once you create this monster,
you have to keep feeding it. As a business owner,
I have to create opportunities for more and more
work for these guys.
Moreover, theres a lot of competition in the
markets the company serves. Black estimates
theres anywhere from 120 to 150 plumbers in
the eight communities where the company has
established a shop. As such, Black has always
felt the need to establish market niches that
differentiate his company from the rest of the
pack. Furthermore, he has many employees
who embrace new technology, so its beneficial
to keep those employees engaged and excited.
Some guys dont want anything to do with
it, he says. But theres a whole group of guys
that do. So if theyre willing to invest time and
energy in offering those services, then we need
to do it.

A CERTAIN CUSTOMER MIGHT NEED, YOU WONT GET YOUR FOOT IN THE
DOOR THEYLL JUST CALL SOMEONE ELSE. AND IF YOU DONT OFFER
ALL THOSE SERVICES, EVENTUALLY SOMEONE ELSE WILL.

In some instances, Black takes an if-you-
buy-it, they-will-come approach in which he
invests in new technology even if theres no
immediate need for it. The expectation is that
someone will eventually ask for it somewhere
down the line. Isnt that a big gamble? Youre
right about that, he says. But its a calculated
gamble.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN MAKES IMPRESSION
Darrin Black claims hes no marketing guru. But he says he knows as
least one important thing about advertising: Never stop doing it.
So far, so good. Since 1994, when he established Black Plumbing in
Abilene, Texas, the company has expanded into seven other communities.
And a clever, multifaceted marketing campaign with an effective branding
component has played a key role in that dramatic growth.
Black says hes been running television ads for more than 20 years.
And he also relies on radio advertising, billboards, a company website and
Facebook to make his company highly visible to potential customers. We
spend around 5 percent of our annual revenue on advertising, he explains.
From my standpoint, if youre a business owner and have employees, its
your responsibility to not build a business just on word-of-mouth referrals.
You owe it to your employees to advertise get your name out there with
a consistent message.
How did he develop an integrated marketing program? I just stumbled
into it, brother, he says. I tell people Im no marketing genius. I just use
good, practical common sense. It doesnt take a genius to figure out you
have to be active in your community and advertise. Advertising tells people
that youre a legit, professional outfit.
Arguably the most effective facet of the companys marketing efforts is
a jingle used in radio and television ads that sticks in peoples heads like an

We have a heck of a banker, Black says. Youve got to have
a good financial backer, no doubt about it. But the size of our
company and the revenue it generates allows us to pay cash for
things from time to time, too.
FIREFIGHTING MEETS PLUMBING
Black took a circuitous route to becoming a full-time plumber
and drain cleaner. After graduating from high school in 1984, he
worked for a plumbing wholesale house in Abilene. About four
years later, he joined the Abilene Fire Department as a full-time
professional firefighter. He worked a one-day-on, two-day-off
schedule. On his off days, Black did plumbing work, earning a
journeymans license in 1992 and achieving master plumber status
in 1994 the year he established Black Plumbing.
In 2013, Black retired from firefighting to run Black
Plumbing full time. It got to the point that

advertising package that Black purchased 21 years ago.

has been joined by his younger sister, Presley. Maverick just might be the
most famous 7-year-old in Abilene, Black says.
Moreover, the companys service trucks feature black, gray and
white camouflage-pattern vinyl wraps. Its something I started seven or
eight years ago, Black says. It seems to me that every time you see a
utility-bed truck, you dont know who it belongs to theyre always white.
I wanted people to know who we are. Its amazing how that camouflage
catches peoples eyes.
Does Black Plumbing do any kind of monitoring to measure the
effectiveness of the various marketing efforts? Not really, Black says. We
dont really need to track what were doing, he asserts. People come up
to me all the time to talk when they see my Black Plumbing jacket. And the
phone rings all day, knock on wood. We get anywhere from 40 to 75 calls
a day. So I know things are working.

Getting on the Field
Michigan contractors use directional drills and vacuum
excavators to upgrade Wi-Fi system at NFL stadium

W
hen a stadium is packed with thousands of fans using
cellphones and two football teams using wireless devices all at
the same time, reliable Wi-Fi is a must.
At Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, the service needed
an upgrade. The Detroit Lions organization and Wi-Fi carrier Verizon went to
work on the system just as the 2016 season was starting.
We broke ground Sept. 19 with a compressed schedule to get the boring
done in between a couple of football games, says Shawn Johnson, project
manager for KLA Laboratories, the primary contractor.
Crews from KLA and a subcontractor, Underground Contractors (UCI),
wrapped up the first phase at the end of September, using directional drills and
vacuum excavators. It wasnt your typical job, says Kevin Mecum, supervisor
at UCI. Ive been doing directional drilling for a long time and Ive never done
anything like what this job required from the machines. It was crazy.
ONLY TWO OPTIONS
Heading into the job, crews had to put on their thinking caps. There
is no access to the seating area from below because it wasnt built with a
basement level.
The Cat6 lines were connected to Wi-Fi access points in handrails in the
seating area. We had to figure out how to get the Cat6 lines from field level,

seating area of Ford Field in two weeks in between
home games of the Detroit Lions
under the seats and up to the handrails, Johnson says. Directional boring
was really the only option.
Crews had rejected cutting into the stairways with saws to get piping for
the Cat6 lines into the desired locations as too costly, time-consuming and
impractical.
PUSHING THE DRILLS
Crews were on a short time schedule and needed the holes for the Cat6
lines drilled within two weeks, working around the home football games.
Having the directional drills here was mission-critical to getting done on
time, Johnson says.
Krueger Concrete Cutting of Novi, Michigan, started by drilling the holes
for the directional drill to enter. The holes were drilled into the brick faade
surrounding the field. Once those were completed, UCI came in with its Ditch
Witch JT9 Model directional drills. The ground there in downtown Detroit is

out of the machines as soon as we got the bore going,
says Mecum.
Directional drills arent typically used to bore
straight up right after starting a bore, but that is what

Its amazing what you can do with them, Mecum
says. Ive done a lot of things, but Ive never been
inside a building trying to bore straight up right away.
RUNNING INTO ROCK
Unfortunately for crews, the clay ground didnt last.
In the construction of the stadium, some of the
clay near the tunnels was excavated and gravel was put
in its place. That was very difficult, Mecum says.
We struggled to get those shots in. Anybody would
have struggled. It was a pea-gravel type of material.
We worked very closely with HammerHead Trenchless Equipment in the

For most of the job, crews accomplished about

five shots a day.

I had one foreman in the rock and the other was still
in the clay. The foreman in the clay was just knocking
out the shots, while the other one wasnt and I could

subcontractor, National Fiber, with a directional drill crew. As the three crews
finished a bore, two more UCI crews were right behind them backfilling with
stone and prepping for concrete.
Crews finished with 39 total bore shots, the longest being 140 feet.
I think we got out of there a day before our deadline, Mecum says.
Bringing in that sub helped because it kept us ahead of schedule.
After all the bores were completed, KLA Laboratories ran the Cat6 lines
and new switches to the Wi-Fi access points mounted in enclosures on the
handrails. There are three enclosures in every stairway on the lower level,
two in every stairway on the second level, and then on the third level there is
a different-style antennae because that coverage will be coming from above,
Johnson says.
The project was completed by the last week of December, in time for the
Lions final home regular season game of the year against NFC North Division
rival Green Bay Packers.
No one really knew what to expect with this job at first, Johnson says.

First I check things like toilet flange seals and trap seals anything
that might be the cause of the odor, he explains. If theres nothing apparent,
the smoker is my next step.
The Power Smoker essentially consists of four components: A 2 1/2 hp,
four-stroke Honda gasoline engine; a 6-foot-long 4-inch-diameter, heavy-duty
piece of flexible duct; a high-pressure, cast aluminum fan that disperses the
smoke at up to 700 cfm; and a canister filled with LiquiSmoke, a laboratory-
tested, nontoxic and nonstaining fluid that produces the smoke.
The fan can be adjusted to a cfm level that best suits the size of the
system being tested. The unit measures 14 1/2 inches long, 15 inches wide
and 20 inches tall. It weighs 47 pounds (not including the canister) and
features a built-in handle for easy portability.
A typical smoke test takes about 15 to 20 minutes and setting up the
machine doesnt take very long, Tillett says. First, securely fasten the open
end of the duct to any clean-out or building trap vent riser. A building trap
vent riser is usually a good access point because the trap prevents the smoke
from traveling through a city sewer main, Tillett says. Then attach the hose
from the canister to the power pack using a quick-connect valve.
After that, start the unit and let it warm up. Then pressurize the canister
by pumping the built-in handle a few times. After that, open the valve to
inject the LiquiSmoke into the units muffler. When the muffler is hot
enough, it turns the liquid into smoke. Last step: Start looking for telltale
smoke that indicates where the leak is located. When you see smoke
coming from vent pipes above the roof, you know the system is full of
smoke and its time to start looking around inside, he says.
In most cases, the draft is quite strong, so you dont always have to
cap off a system, Tillett explains. But if we run a test and still dont see
anything, we can partially plug a roof vent to pressurize the system. In
most cases, though, were not trying to create pressure. If you pressurize
the system, you can force the smoke through traps, so it looks like theres a
leak where there isnt a leak.
Why not just use a pipeline inspection camera? While Tillett has
nothing against televising lines, he says its not always the most efficient or

you cant get a candle to light, that
adds time. Once I bought two or three candles I lit the first candle and
there was no smoke nothing. I actually went through all three candles,
then had to waste even more time running back to a store to get more
candles. Here all you have to do is make sure you have gas in the engine and
liquid smoke and youre good to go.
Tillett says hes seen the Power Smoker succeed where other efforts
have failed. In one instance, a homeowner troubled by an intermittent, very
strong sewer odor in his basement had already called in two plumbers, to no
avail. After a walk-through revealed no apparent odor source, Tillett revved
up the smoke machine. Within 10 minutes, we found major smoke in a
hallway in the basement, he recalls.
At that point, we traced it back and saw smoke coming from some
insulation in an unfinished area of the basement, Tillett continues. We
found a 1 1/2-inch drainline that a contractor had failed to cap off during
a remodeling project. The homeowners were very surprised and very
grateful because the line was still connected to the sewer.
Its a very ingenious machine, Tillett concludes. Its extremely valuable

BUSINESS DRAINLINE CLEAR
PROBLEM: In May 2015, the manager of
Bode Central healthy shake bar in Howard,
Wisconsin, sought a solution for a drain
that was backing up into a quick-wash sink.
Customers complained that the restaurant had
a smell. The drainline would plug up and the
restaurant would have to close early to clean the
mess, resulting in a loss of business and compromised sanitary conditions.
SOLUTION: In June 2015, the 50-gallon indoor grease trap received a thorough
cleaning. Liquid Trap-Cleer from Lenzyme was dosed at 2 ounces every evening,
taking an employee about one minute to do. Trap-Cleer is designed to keep the
system flowing properly and consume much of the grease.
RESULT: A follow-up appointment in August 2015 indicated that the
system went 10 weeks without backing up, with only a small amount of
grease built up in the trap. The smells were completely gone. In January
2017, after treating for a year and a half, the manager says the system
is operating perfectly. There are no smells and the lines stay clean.

CAMERA USED TO SURVEY
REMOTE STORM DRAIN
PROBLEM: Long lengths of storm drain in a new
housing complex near Darwin, Australia, required
inspection before the next stage of building could
commence. The problem was that the drain crossed
land not suitable for vehicles, no services were
available, and the drain diameter was 15 3/4 inches,
which would normally require a tractor system for the
survey.
SOLUTION: A Trogloprobe-SL system from MEDIT was carried 3/10 of a mile
to the site. Fortunately, the system weighs only 40 pounds and was easy to
carry. Entrance to the storm drain was made using a short length of 6-inch PVC
pipe with a 90-degree bend at the lower end. The camera head chosen for the
survey was the T800 forward-view camera, which has sufficient light output
and sensitivity to survey pipes much larger than the ones found here. Despite

DRAIN CLEANING MACHINE CONQUERS
TOUGH ROOT MASS
PROBLEM: A homeowner from Manistee,
Michigan, called about a sewer line backup that
resulted in water and sewage in the basement.
Salmon Sewer & Drain Cleaning responded,
and the technician found an enormous amount
of roots in the line causing the blockage. The
roots were so large and the clog was so bad that
the technician knew it would be a difficult job.
SOLUTION: The technician knew the Spartan Tool Model 1065 drain clean-

Intuitive grouting control system saves time

Chemical grouting is a spot repair method that has been used
in water and wastewater for over 50 years. In the last few decades,
grouting methods have changed very little until now.
Once a training-intensive task requiring complex mechanical
panels, grout application has joined a growing industry trend toward
computer-aided processes with the intuitive Easy Grout system
from CUES.
Easy Grout is a software program that is used to control and
record the introduction of grout into mains and laterals, says Mark
French, business development manager for CUES Inc.
French says his company developed the product to address the
need for a simplified system that doesnt require a lot of training.
Customers were having trouble training new hires or cross-
training existing employees because of the time it takes to learn how to
operate the mechanical panel, French says. This system enables the
user to learn in a matter of hours; no more than a couple of days. The
old systems can take weeks, and drastically reduce productivity.
It was designed to reduce training and to provide precise
information as to whether a joint passes or fails, and how much
grouting material was used.
Designed for ease of use, the system comes with field presets for
pipe diameter and depth to automatically determine gel time and void
