SOL: VS. 7 : The student will demonstrate knowledge of the issues that divided our
nation and led To the Civil War by identifying the events and the differences between
northern and southern states that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the
creation of West Virginia; describing Virginias role in the war, including identifying
major battles that took place in Virginia; describing the roles played by whites, enslaved
African Americans, free African Americans and American Indians.

Content Outline The purpose of this lesson is to inform students about the divide our
nation had during the Civil War and the differences between the North and South that
shaped the history and laws in our country. Students need to know the major events that
led to the divide of Virginians and the creation of West Virginia.

Rationale: This information is important because these events shaped our country.
Virginia played a large role in the Civil War and students should know this information to
have background knowledge on other events that occurred after the Civil War.

Objective: After this unit students will be able to know the differences between the North
and the South, the reasons for the civil war, major civil war battles an Virginias
contribution to the Civil War. Students will be able to answer questions on a quiz and test
that relate to the information that they learned. Students will also be able to complete
activities that are specific to battles, issues, and Civil War events.

Lesson Opening: Will introduce the lesson by using Tangmania and Gagoola chart (is the
north vs. south) when you turn the chart to the right it is a map of the U.S. This chart
represents the differences in supplies, factories, etc. that the north or the south had.

Connection: The new information being taught is connected to prior knowledge because
students have learned about the American Revolution and the Declaration of
Independence. These events established the idea of freedom and states.

Instructional Strategies/Processes:
** See chart attached**
1. Begin lesson with opener
2. Transition into activity
3. Refresh material we discussed
4. Close lesson and prepare for the next day

Products: Students will complete KWL charts, maps, story outlines, worksheets, notes, a
quiz and a chart. Students will have study prep and a flap book to refer to for their test.

Assessment: Informal assessment will be throughout the unit through simulations,

worksheet,
activities, flap books, and class discussion. Formal assessment will occur when students
have 1 quiz and 1 test.
Closure: To wrap up this unit plan there will be a test at the end. I will be able to assess
and measure how well the students understood the material taught to them the past 5
weeks. Before administering the test there will be a review game for students to refresh
all the material.

Homework: Will be assigned throughout the week. Check chart below.

Differentiation: Some students will have reduction of notes by the way they are prepared.
We will also reduce the number of questions students have to answer on worksheets.
Some activities will be read aloud to students. Some students will have partners to
complete activities.
