TREATMENT OR SOULTION FOR THE ROAD PROBLEM

In road construction, when failures of the structure happen to the pavement or the structure,
there should be some kind of solution or treatment made on the road structure. Some of the
treatments are:

1. Base Repair

If it happens that the distress is so severe the subgrade would have been affected, then, the
structure must be replaced through a full-depth dig-out, which may be done in a variety of
ways. The designer must specify the area and depth of the repair for each section of the
pavement.

2. Patching

Patching could also be done to repair wheel ruts and delaminated or pothole areas. The
common construction practices in placing HMA for the patching process include the usage of
a spreader box, grader patching or using a paver. If properly performed, the result of the
process will be a satisfactory. The paved areas should be fog sealed, in order to avoid any
other unwanted condition in future, prior to applying BST. Fog sealing is the light application
of an asphalt emulsion.

After the final brooming, the new chip could also be fog sealed. This is to assist in aggregate
retention and prevents the shedding and shelling of the new aggregate. Besides, the fog sealed
could also use as waterproofing to the new wearing course.

3. Crack Sealing

Any failure of structure regarding the transverse and longitudinal crack can be treated by
crack sealing. Typically the process would use the rubberized tar material or mixture of sand
and asphalt emulsion to fill the crack. Cracks and joints 1/4 or greater should be cleaned of
any incompressible material including old sealant, and then sealed prior to applying a BST.

4. Slurry Seal

A slurry seal ought to be applied at 25% of the design life for maximum benefit in preserving
the pavement structure. Maintenance with a slurry seal must be instituted before significant
pavement deterioration occurs. Aggregate size, emulsion type, and any additives determine
classification of the slurry seal. If distress is noted, crack sealing ought to be done before
applying a slurry seal. When slurry is placed over dry and ravelling pavement, a tack coat
should be done before the slurry seal.
So, one of the road conditions that had been a bother in this case is the potholes on the road
construction. The potholes could have cause lots of problem in the long term. So, it is really
advises that the potholes to be treat properly. In order to do so, the first thing to do is to
determine the range of time.

How long does it take to make a pothole repair?

In determining the priority for repairing potholes we consider the size and depth of the
pothole; traffic type- speed and volume, road alignment, visibility and also the position of the
pothole in relation to the road width.

Depth of pothole on Depth of pothole on the Repair priority

the road pavement
(intervention level) (intervention level)
7.5cm or more 4cm or more 24 hours or less
Between 4 and 7.5cm Between 2 and 4cm Up to 6 months, where possible
within 28 days
Less than 4cm Less than 2cm No action at this time

If a section of the carriageway deteriorates and is less than 4cm deep it is not considered to be
a pothole, the same principle applies to footways when less than 2cm deep.

A defect which is the required depth but does not extend more than 30 or 60cm in width may
still be a defect in the carriageway or footway but is not technically classed as a pothole.

Potholes that do not meet intervention levels would require further excavation to repair. If
material were to be used without excavation it would be plucked out from the shallow
depression by the passing traffic and the repair would only last a matter of days.
