Statement of Standard 1: Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of
learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social,
emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and
challenging learning experiences (Professional Development in New Jersey, 2014, pg 1).

Name of Artifact: Personal Philosophy

Date of Artifact: February 8, 2017

Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01

Rationale Statement:

For this artifact, I had to write about what my personal philosophy is for teaching. In
relation to the standard it connects to the Critical Dispositions section 1.iii.1 which states the
teacher respects learners differing strengths and needs and is committed to using this
information to further each learners development (Professional Development in New Jersey,
2014, pg 2). In the paper, I wrote about how my whole goal is for students to be able to bring in
their problems or concerns, if they have any, and transform them into art. Taking their feelings
into account is a big part about their needs and strengths and when I allow them to bring in their
problems it could really be benefit some students.

While writing this I was able to reflect on everything I went through education wise in
the past couple of years of my life. Getting to this point really just reaffirmed my love for
teaching. This artifact puts into perspective how much a teacher needs to take into account.
Writing this confirmed my belief that teaching is not just a job. Teachers go through a lot and if a
person does not have the passion for it they can get burned out very quickly. Teachers deal with
different types of people, not just students, and it confirms that this is not an easy occupation. It
can take a lot out of you. What I really learned though, is that this is not something I am worried
about. I am excited for all the different people I will encounter and I look forward to all of the
hardships I am sure to face.

This artifact is something that I can always look back to if I find I am ever losing sight of
why I wanted to become a teacher. There are sure to be days where I will hit a metaphorical wall,
and I will not know what to do. I can always refer back to this artifact and remember all of the
amazing teachers I had in my life. They are the ones that lead me to where I am and where I am

sure to go. If I do wind up losing sight of what I am doing and what I stand for then I will always
have something to look back on.
