Objective: The students will be able to recognize shading and demonstrate basic re-
creation.
Materials: pencils, colored pencils, PowerPoint on shading, scrap paper, paper with
shading instructions
Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: Prior to this class, students finished a project on
point perspective and shapes. This lesson will incorporate shading on the different shapes
students have previously created.
Anticipatory Set: Start the PowerPoint off with different art pieces that have a lot of
shading. The art pieces are bound to grab the students attention.
Input and Modeling: The teacher will show a PowerPoint presentation that goes over
the basics of shading. The PowerPoint is going to show examples of art pieces with
shading in them, and also show sketches of simple shading. The PowerPoint will also
show how lighting will affect shading, and how lighting/shading effects certain shapes.
Student Practice and Checking for Understanding- Students will then be given
shading worksheets. These shading worksheets will be handed in at the end of class.
These worksheets will have two bars. One bar for a block shading spectrum, and another
for a blended shading spectrum. There will then be a section with shapes: a cube, a
cylinder, and a sphere. This is going to demonstrate how shading varies depending on the
shape of the object. This will also give them practice. While the students are working on
the worksheet the teacher will walk about checking on the progress of each student. The
teacher will give pointers if he feels they are necessary or helpful and will also answer
any questions the students may have.
Differentiation: Students will be working at their desks during the PowerPoint and when
they are working on the worksheet. Though they will be at their desk, they will be

encouraged to ask for help whether it is from the teacher or from a fellow student. Not all
the students may grasp the concept fully, so I will be walking around to help them.
