Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Rachel DeCarlo Date: ___3/6/173/7/17_____

Group Size: 20 Allotted Time 2/ 50 min sessions Grade Level__2nd__

Subject or Topic: __Flower Structure_____________

Common Core/PA Standard:

S.K-2.B.1.1.1- describe basic external structures of animals and plants.

Learning Targets/Objectives:

The second grade students will be able to discover the different parts of flowers by dissecting
using the tools provided in class.
The second grade students will be able to distinguish the different parts of a flower by filling out
sheet while dissecting flower.
The second grade students will be able to determine whether their flower is a perfect flower or an
imperfect flower by dissecting flower and finding parts.

Assessment Approaches:

Worksheet that students will fill out while looking at the parts of the plants, while taping the parts of the
plants to the worksheet.
At end of lesson, students will be drawing their own flowers and have the students label the parts of the
plant. This will be done at the end of the second session too to look for improvement.

Evidence:

An exit tool I am using to assess is the second flower that the students draw and label.
Another worksheet I will be looking at is the worksheet they are filling out while dissecting.
Assessment Scale:
.
The teacher will use points for the worksheet the students fill out when dissecting. It will be a point for
each part filled out.

Subject Matter/Content:

Vocab:

Perfect Flower- a flower with all reproductive parts

Imperfect Flower- a flower with either just male or female reproductive parts
Stamen- male fertilizing organ, contains anther and filament
Pistils- female organs of a flower, contains stigma, style, and ovary.
Petals- modified leaves that surround the reproductive parts of flowers
Sepal- leaves that for around the bottom of the flower to protect developing flower and keep it from
drying out
Style- long tube like structure
Stigma- pollen receptor in flower.

Implementation:

Introduction :

Start off the lesson by having a flower for each group on their tables. Have them look at it and inspect it.
After they are done looking at the flower, ask them about what they noticed. Ask if anyone knows what
any parts of the flower is called. After having the group discussion, tell students today we will learn
about the structure of a flower.
After showing the students video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djPVgip_bdU

Development:

Start the power point showing the visuals of the parts of the flowers. Also, give diagrams with
definitions of parts of flowers on it for the students.
Have the students follow along on their handout while teacher explains the parts of the flower.
Start the lesson by showing how flowers grow and what they need.
Give background information about how flowers grow and before that ask the students if they know
(sunlight, soil, water)
The slide show should have pictures with little to know text. Just the parts labeled of the plant. Go over
each part and explain the importance for each. Discus and teach what a perfect and imperfect flower is.
Tell the students the difference between a perfect flower and an imperfect flower.
Perfect flower is the flower that has both reproduction organs for both male and female.
Imperfect flowers are flowers that have one, either male or female.
Show and explain the stamen and pistil, petals, and sepal.
Explain that pistils are female organs of a flower, contains stigma, style, and ovary. The stigma is pollen
receptor.
Stamen is the male fertilizing organs including the anther and filament.
Explain the sepal is the bottom leaves at the flower to protect the developing flower and to help the plant
not dry out.

After teaching about the parts, tell the students they will be illustrating a flower and labeling their flower
with the parts that they were just taught.
Tell the students to label to the best of their ability.
Handout the papers and have crayons for them to color too.
After students are done, collect art work.
Keep for tomorrows lesson.
The next day, explain to students that they will be dissecting flowers to figure out if they have a perfect
flower or imperfect.
Review what was taught yesterday by having the diagram up and having the students volunteer to
answer what each part is. Have another student volunteer to go over something about the part.
Have trays with materials on table and pass out worksheets the students will use through the dissection.
Have students come to a table and model what you expect from them. Show them how they are to fill
out the worksheet.
Show the students how they should start the dissection by removing the petals first.
Go over safety rules with the students.
Tell them that they should not put the flowers near their face.
They should not use the tweezers for anything but taking a part the plant.
After going over the safety rules, have students go back to groups and start the dissection.
Tell the students that while dissecting, keep the parts of the plant that is on the worksheet and have them
tape it onto the inquiry sheet.
Teacher should be walking around, helping if need be, and answering questions when needed.
Students should be filling out worksheet while dissecting their flower.
After students are done labeling their worksheet, have the students clean up and put materials back on
tray.
Finally, hand out more paper and have students draw another flower. Have them label everything they
can.
Go over and review sheet with students.

Closure/Summarizing:

Talk to the students about the parts and the importance of the parts.
Have them talk to the people around them about what they learned and have volunteers share.
Then get into what the importance of petals and there colors and why they think it is important.
Accommodations/Differentiation:

Vision impairment- For this students with the vision impairment there is a couple things I will have for them.
For the diagrams I have on the board I will have an enlarged print out from them at their desk.
Also when I give the handouts to the students when going over the presentation, have an enlarged copy as well
for the student.

Materials/Resources:

5 trays with tweezer, and magnifying glass

3 lilies and 2 tulips
20 Diagram and definitions handout
20 worksheets of diagram of flowers
40 sheets of paper for illustration

Reflective Response:

Report of Student Learning Target/Objectives Proficiency Levels

Reflect after lesson is taught
Includes remediation for students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement

Remediation Plan (if applicable)

Personal Reflection:

How was the flow of my lesson?

Was the flowers used in this lesson show exactly what the lesson was teaching, could the students find
all the parts?

Additional reflection/thoughts can also be included.
