1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Travel transducers
Up to three, digital or analogue, travel transducers, in any combination, can be used for
simultaneous measurements.
Resistance measurement
Main contact resistance measuring can directly be done with an internal 200 Amp current
generator. Both static and dynamic measuring is possible.
Pre-insertion resistor resistance can be measured with use of a reference resistance.
Motor monitoring
In the Auxiliary section there is provisions to monitor current and voltage from an external motor
supply.
Internal sampling
Sampling frequency for analogue and digital functions can be programmed for frequencies up to
50 kHz. Note! The PC-software sets the sampling frequency.
Power supply
An external AC- and DC- power as well as the internal accumulator can be used.
Future
SA10 is prepared for analyzing synchronized breakers, read pressure transducers, control
external logic etc.
Environmental
SA10 is built in a small metal carry bag designed for rough handling in tough outdoor
environments. All connections are protected for any possible type of electrical discharges and
disturbances. Some of the inputs are even protected against faulty connections up to 400V peak.
SA10 fulfils the European conformity requirements in Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)-
directive 89/336/EEC including amendments by the CE-marking Directive 93/68/EEC, and is CE-
marked.
Internal printer
SA10 can be equipped with a small built-in printer for printouts of contact times in stand-alone
mode.
Processor 1 GHz
Internal memory: 256 Mbyte
Hard disc: 2 Gbyte free disc space
System software: Windows-2000/XP
Word-2000/XP
For printouts a small battery powered printer is practical but any printer supported by windows
can be used.
PC-software
The testing method used in this program, follows established industrial standard.
Software BTS9
SA10 versions with serial number <= SA10150 uses the older software BTS9
See separate manual Instruction manual BTS9 for more information
Remark!
These older versions of SA10 can be upgrade for use with the newest software BTS11.
Contact your distributor for upgrade information.
Software BTS11
SA10 versions with serial number > SA10150 uses the newest software BTS11
See separate manual BTS11 User manual for more information
2. CONNECTIONS
Important!
Before making any live connections to the SA10, make sure that it is connected to protective
earth (ground).
When the SA10 is connected to a wall socket, the socket must be a grounded power outlet.
Before connecting the SA10 to a high-voltage breaker, make sure the breaker is closed and
grounded on at least one side.
Never do any work on a circuit breaker unless the control circuits of the breaker are
disconnected from the SA10 control inputs or outputs.
Make sure that surrounding personal cant touch the breaker during an operation.
If a test sequence shall be running in automatic mode its absolutely necessary to have a
security circuit that prevent surrounding personal to touch the test object during the sequence.
The power supplies for coils and motor must be interlocked to a security circuit that cut the
power if the security circuit is open.
See the additional safety regulations presented in sections 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 2.5.1 and 2.6.1.
IMPORTANT!
The SA10 have a separate grounding terminal (green/yellow) that must be grounded to the
nearest protective earth (ground) with a separate wire.
Use separate contact groups ("Contacts 1" - "Contacts 3") for separate phases.
Use contacts "A" - "D" for separate breaker elements in each phase.
Use contacts "a" and "b" for connection of auxiliary contacts (live or free)
Note!
Do not exceed the input voltage limit of 250 V AC or 400 V DC.
Note!
The value of the pre-insertion resistor must be in the range 50 - 5000 ohm
2.4.2 Connection
Use a connection wire >= 25 mm2 to connect the 200A current generator from the SA10 to the
breaking unit that is going to be measured.
Important
Keep the to two measuring wires near together (twisted) as long as possible to get a good
measuring result.
2.5.3 Connection
See figure 2.5. Make sure that the connections to the reference resistor are well isolated.
Connect the breaker coils to the SA10 for a normal CO-operation (not shown in figure 2.5).
Note! Do not connect the motor to SA10. See paragraph 2.6 for connections.
Rref
Note!
The white 4 mm panel socket "ISOL" is an isolated connection that can be used to disconnect
the control circuits of the breaker.
Note!
The connection of the motor circuit is optional and is only necessary for monitoring the voltage
and current

Tip!
Use prefabricated cables for connection.
2.8 Connection of a PC
Any standard PC with one free communication port "COM1" or "COM2" can be connected.
Use a standard serial RS232 PC-cable with a 9 pole DSUB pin connector for connection to SA10.
Description of communication cable for the build-in printer (can also be used for the PC )
Note!
The build-in printer can not be used at the same time as the notebook computer.
Important!
Read carefully section 2.1 for General safety regulations and sections 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 2.5.1 and
2.6.1 for additional safety regulations
The inputs "Uk" and "Ul" are for future use but can be used as simple voltage instruments.
If the SA10 is powered from the built-in battery is the text "Batt" displayed in lower right corner.
The text "Batt" is flashing for low battery voltage.
Note!
When SA10 is in this mode can operations only be done with the operation buttons.
Note:
Resistance measurement can only be done when the SA10 is powered from an separate AC or
DC source.
Result mode
Results of an operation are displayed.
Resistance measurement
Resistance value.
Current value.
Voltage value.
Pressing any of the operation buttons "CLOSE" or "OPEN" will get You back to monitoring mode
where new operations and measurements can be done.
If no button is pressed during about 5 seconds the SA10 will get You back to monitoring mode for
making a new operation and measurements.
The latest contact times for Close, Open and Close-Open operations are then printed out on
the build-in printer.
4. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
5.0 MAINTENANCE
Check battery condition by short circuit the high current cables (2*10 m, 25 mm2) and
make a resistance measurement. The measurement current should be >195A.
If the value is lower then 195 A you have to charge the internal battery by connecting the
mains input to a wall socket for some hours. Make a new try and check the current value
again. If the value still is lower then 195 A the battery must be replaced.
Note!
This is important if Resistance measurement shall be done or that the unit shall operate
without main power.
Note:
The SA10 internal batteries may be need recharging if it has been stored away for some
time. Recharge by connecting the mains.
6.0 ADJUSTMENTS
6.2 General
The calibration of SA10 is done with the software BTS11 (BTS9).
Refer to User manual for operating instructions.
Note!
Password at delivery is elcon
Principle of calibration
Two points are measured at abt.10 respective about 90% of full scale for selected input.
The values are measured with both the SA10 and a connected reference instrument.
With use of the equation for the straight line new calibration constants are then calculated.
The dialogue box has three tabs for different types of inputs.
The calibration constants for selected inputs are displayed.
For tab Analogue Inputs are the inputs selected from a list box.
Note!
Typing new values in the text boxes change the calibration constants immediately.
This is not recommended for tabs Analog inputs, Transducers and Resistance.
Use the command button Calibration wizard instead.
