VIBRATION PICKUP
Sricture, Function, Maintenance, Technical Data

The vibration pickup delivers a measuring signal proportional to speed. For this reason
its sensitivity E is given in mV/mm/sec.

Structure A permanent magnet (1) generates a constant magnetic induction in an air

gap (2). The field lines close over the housing (3). In the air gap a coil (4) is so fixed
between diaphragms(5, 6) that it can move vertically to the magnetic field lines.
The bearing vibrations are transmitted to the moving coil via a transmission rod (8)
which is screwed into the pickup rod (7) and. secured by a counter nut (9).

of center position

(hen installing the vibration pickup make sure that the moving coil of the pickup is
i center position. This can be realized by means of adjusting screw (11). If the bearing
acer (10) is removed and the adjustment screw (11) is threaded in until stop the
"ing coil is kept in center position and cannot escape to the rear. The transmission
'a not be deformed for this can lead to false measurements I
I mounted the pickup by means of the 4 spacer bolts and after the transmission
fastened to the bearing bridge the bearing spacer has to be reinserted and

fixed by means of the adjustment screw. You must ascertain that no dirt and above all
no iron turnings can get into the boring.

When exchangingthe coilscrew off only the cover and the diaphragm (5). When
disassembling and assembling the diaphragm make sure that it is not spanned. The
coil connections are determined as follows

1 black 3 blue 5 shield

2 free 4 green 6 brown

For polarity test connect voltmeter and ammeter to (+) at contact 4 (6), (-) at con-
tact 1 (3). When the transmission rod (8) is forced in there must be a positive deflection.
When mounting the diaphragm (5) make sure that there is a frictionless motion of coil
and vibration laces in the supply lines I

When installing the diaphragm it is recommended to use a centering ring
in order to reach an equi -distant air gap all around between moving coil
and steel body.

2.2 Instructions for _balancing of rotors

with known values.

1) Set up the machine for the requested type of drive

and balancing speed.
At control cabinet:
2a) Set star/delta switch on star or delta on either side,
depending on the desired. direction or rotation, and on
star for lighter rotors or delta for heavier rotors.
2b) Sot the phase-generator switch on main drive or photo.
cell, according to selected type of drive.
At easin r instrument:
) Set operation switch on "Balancing" or flAuswuchtentt.
Set polarity switches on or "', depending whether
the heavy or the light point srould be indicated.
Set dials P 1 (Pt) C (CL, FL) C2 (CR, Fri) P2 (Pa)
l
on pre-determined and recorded positions.

) Start the machine by moving the controller from "0" to "1"

and accelerate he rotor cautiously step by step up to 71 7'
for balancing speed.

5) Unlock the worksupports.

6) Take readins and correct unbalance accordingly.
) Correct workpiece until average indications of at least
six consecutive runs are within the limits, given by the
engine manufacturer.
Use more runs if scatter (caused by blade shifting) is
wide or less runs if scatter is small.

4 Mechanical fault

Mechanical Faults Conducive to Unbalance

Correction

1 Unbalance of universal shaft Balancing of shaft and rotor by
"rightabout indexing"

2 Backlash or Jamming of hinges Reconditioning or replacement of
universal shaft

3 Looseness Tighter adjustment, subject to
compensation by "rightbout indexing"
Eccentricity and wobbling Careful machining. Unbalance
of drive shaft spigot uncontrollable by conventional
balancing procedures
5 Eccentricity of bearings of Utilization in balancing procedures
actual operation with respect of bearings of actual operation
to journals used in balancing
machine
Eccentricity of inner races Should the resulting errors approxi-
of rolling contact bearings mate the order of magnitude of the
required unbalance tolerances, the
rolling contact bearings or at
least the inner races would have to
be included in the balancing proce-
dure.

7, Slippage of shrunk fit parts Prevent further slippage; component
parts which may be easily separated
should be provided with a marking
in order to restore their exact
position with respect to the whole

8 Loose parts such as shavings Remove the loose parts
due to machining, welding
globules, scales (oxide). etc

I 9 Parts subject to elastic dis-

placements, the position of
which depends upon the ro-
tational speed
Secure fastening of such parts. If im-
possible, balancing at speed of actual
operation

10 Lacking parts of rotor Add either the lacking parts or
equivalent replacement weights

11 Unbalance of auxiliary shaft Improvement of balanct condition
by accurate balancing, rightabout
indexing of rotors

12 Eceiitricity and wobbling of Careful machining of auxiliary shaft,
spigot fit on auxiliary shaft Apply "rightabout indexing" for
1 off-rotors
In actual operation the matching shaft
should be faultless, otherwise un-
controllable discrepancies might occur

Th ampli-inte'i'ator contains the system for converting the initial

uare wave current uellve:'ea by the photoelectric heao P 17 or P 32
into two angular reference currents in quadrature with respect to one
another (and to special order the automatic control system for timing
the procedure by means of deferring relays).

In mnual operation the scanning light is lit by moving to "ON" the

tumbler switch labelled "photoelectric head". In "OFF"-position the
lighting of the photoelectric head is cut off, whereas the reading
retaineraent of the indicator head is "ON".

Should the ampli-integrator contain the equicmerit for automatic timing

this same switch; labelled "time-lag switch" :cu1d effect the prelim-
inary switching "CN" of the automatic control system, which would be
finally tripped by depressing the lower transparnt button. The latter
would - be lit by an internal signal light.

The photoelectric head will be lit simuitaneonsly.

ThE time interval between the start and the retainment of the unbalance
readings can be adju ed by means of the potentiometer located 'on the
righthand part of the panel.

The pointers of the milliamcieters fc uier rcfercr.ce currents have -

to coincide with the red marks at 66 - 80 milliamp. for rctticnal speeds
up to 20 000 r.p.m., and with the marks at 20 milliamp. beyond 20 000 nm
A set of monitor sockets is arranged at the .ear of the ampli-
integrator. The essential functions can be tested by connecting a
cathode ray oscillograph to the following monitor sockets:
Between 0 - 1 square wave current delivered b the photoelectric
head
Between 0-2 sqttare wave current )
Between 0-3 triangular current Integrator (phase i)

Between 0-4 reference current for the vertical component'

Between 0-5 anode voltage
Between 0-6 square wave current
Between 0-7 triangular.current ) Integrator (phase 2)
Between 0-8 reference current for the horizontal component

The monitrr socket "0" has to bo grounded.

An interruption of the phase generator line between the airpiinteg:'ateur

and the indicator head (by removing the plug) is likely to damage the
amplifiers in the amj'ii-iritegrator, unless the latter would be dis,
connected from the flame.
