Animal Research Project

Lesson Length: 45 minute blocks of time each day for a 2 weeks.

Analyze Learners

1. 18 students
2. 10 females and 8 males
3. 6-7 years old
4. Mental, Social, Physical, Social Notes such as:
o Disabilities: 1 student IEP for speech and reading resource, 1 student IEP for
speech
o Learning Differences: My students work better independently as opposed to in
partners or group work. They also work better with choice in the activity and
when technology is incorporated.
o 17 African American students and 1 English speaking Hispanic
5. Current Knowledge, Prerequisites, and Notes about Learner Attitudes: Students are
familiar with using Gmail to visit suggested links. They are also familiar with using
websites to find information (completed a Black History project with home
assistance).

o Kinesthetic (Hands On): 60%

State Objectives
The learner will explore the San Diego Zoo website to choose an animal to research. The
learner will research their chosen animals natural habitat, geographical location, dietary
habits, and body descriptors. The student will use Google Slides to present their findings
and to include pictures throughout their presentation demonstrating their competency with
Google Slides and copy and pasting.

All methods, media, and materials needed for the lesson are listed. Give rationales why
these selected methods, media and materials are appropriate for your lesson.

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods


For each listed above, details of how they will be implemented into the lesson to enhance
learning with using 5Ps.
1. Preview the materials: Previewed websites before planning the project. Also, previewed
the San Diego Zoo Website for appropriate media and to plan the easiest information the
students can attain from the website.
2. Prepare the materials: Email with Zoo website link, research paper format with
information the students need to collect
3. Prepare the environment: Students will work at their table seats with their ChromeBooks
and headphones
4. Prepare the learners: We will explore the San Diego zoo website together and will
choose an animal to explore together so we can see the different options on the website
including videos and pictures.
5. Provide the learning experiences: Students will participate in a classroom discussion
while learning about the research project and the website. They will then be completely
independent while exploring and choosing their animal and completing their research.
With the assistance of the teacher and the schools Technology Coach the students will
complete a Google Slide presentation. The student will be responsible for presenting
their google slide and research to the class.
Require Learner Participation
Day 1: Whole class website exploration followed by independent website exploration to help
choose their animal to research.
Day 2: Students will finalize their animal choice and begin research on their animals body.
They will use two descriptive words to describe their animals body and also include how
many legs their animal has and record their findings on their recording sheet.
Day 3: Students will research their animals geographical location and also describe their
habitat and record their findings on their recording sheet.
Day 4: Students will research their animals dietary habits and record them on their
recording sheet.
Days 5-8: Students will use a teacher created Google Slide Template to fill in their project
information. Students will receive a whole group lesson demonstrating how to import this
information and then over the following days the teacher and technology coach will assist as
needed.
Days 9-10: Students will share their projects.
