What is the purpose of their Jup, their penance, fasting or devotional worship, who are in love
with some one other than Vaheguru-Akalpurakh? || 1 || O people of the world, let us attach our
mind to the Controller of Maya - Vaheguru. Through our clever tactics, the Lord, whose power
prevails in all the four directions, can not be obtained. || 1 || Pause || Get rid of the greed and
the mentality to please people. Get rid of the sexual desire, anger and egotism. || 2 || One gets
attached to egotism by practicing baseless rituals. Such people join together and worship
nothing but stones. || 3 || Kabeer says, one can come very close to Vaheguru through

O Nanak, there is only One formless Vaheguru who is not under any imposed discipline.
Myriads of others, like Rama, are mere dust before Him. Innumerable stories of Krishna and the
wisdom of Vedas are nothing in comparison to the knowledge of Vaheguru Ji. So many pose as
beggars and dance, spinning around to the beats. There are many Raasdharis, who make their
presentation of various Raas in front of people in the market place. They pose as kings and
queens to sing and speak about all kind of things. They wear extremely fancy earrings, and
precious necklaces worth thousands of dollars. The bodies on which these ornaments are worn,
O Nanak, will eventually turn to ashes. Such actions can not make them wise. Wisdom cannot
be found merely through words. Its achievement is as hard as iron. The spiritual wisdom can
only be achieved if Vaheguru bestows His Grace; other tricks and smartness are useless. || 2 ||

We are good at talking, but we are extremely bad in putting our talks into practice. Internally, we
are impure and black, but outwardly, we appear pure and white. We imitate those who stand
and serve at Vaheguru’s Door. O Nanak, our lives will become profitable if we associate with
those, who are deeply in tune with their Husband - Vaheguru, and thus experience the pleasure
of His Love. They are so humble and meek that they do not claim to possess any power, even
though they are so strong and powerful. || 2 ||

One can not form union with Vaheguru by wearing a patched coat, or by using a special walking
stick. Union with Vaheguru is not possible even by smearing the body with ashes. Wearing the
earrings, shaving the head or blowing the conch shell are not the ways to come closer to
Vaheguru. The real secret of attaining union with Vaheguru-Akalpurakh is to remain unattached
from the materialistic world while living within the world. || 1 || By mere words, Union is not
attained. One who looks upon all without any discrimination, and treats them as equals is a true
seeker of Union. || 1 || Pause || Vaheguru can not be realized by staying away from home, by
visiting the tombs of the dead or by sitting in trances. Union is not obtained by wandering
through foreign lands or by bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. The real secret of attaining
union with Vaheguru-Akalpurakh is to remain unattached from the materialistic world while living
within the world. || 2 || All the doubts of mind are dispelled, and the wandering mind is restrained
only after meeting the True Guru. Nectar of Vaheguru’s Naam starts trickling down the mind, a
stage of immense stability is attained, and deep within, a sense of belonging to Vaheguru is felt.
The real secret of attaining union with Vaheguru-Akalpurakh is to remain unattached from the
materialistic world while living within the world. || 3 || O Nanak, while staying within this world
and away from the worldly attachments is the only way to practice Union with Vaheguru - Yoga.
When you will learn to blow the horn without using the conch shell, then only the state of
fearless dignity is obtained. The real secret of attaining union with Vaheguru-Akalpurakh is to

If bathing in the rivers associated with pilgrimage can salvage a person from the cycle of birth
and death than the frog, who always lives in water, should be the best candidate for salvation. ||
If by growing hair one can get salvation the Banyan tree should be the first to be considered. || If
nudity is the criteria for salvation than Deer in the forest is the most eligible candidate. || If one
can obtain Vaheguru by smearing the body with ashes, one can think of a donkey, who lives in
dust. || If Vaheguru is obtained by remaining silent, the animals are always silent. || There is no
salvation without the Guru. One can get saved only after meeting the Guru. (i.e. acting upon His

They are getting ready to go to bathe at the sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but their minds are still
evil, and their bodies are full of thieves (vices). || Some of their filth may have gotten washed off
by these baths, but they have put upon themselves twice as much filth – the filth of ego and
other vices. || Like a gourd, they may look clean from outside, but on the inside, they are still
filled with poison. || The Sadhs – people, who have absolute control over their vices are fine,
even without such baths, while a thief is a thief, no matter how much he/she bathes at the
places of pilgrimage. || 2 ||

If one has filth within the heart, even if one bathes at sacred places of pilgrimage, still, he shall
not go to heaven. Nothing is gained by pleasing others — Vaheguru –Akalpurakh cannot be
fooled. || 1 || Worship the One and only One Vaheguru. The true cleansing bath is service to
the Guru – acting upon the instructions of the Guru. || 1 || Pause || If merely bathing in water
can save people, then what about the frog, who takes bath in water all the time? As is the frog,
so is that person; they both keep taking birth over and over again. || 2 || One cannot escape the
fire of hell even if a hard-hearted sinner dies in Benaares. Whereas a true Saint of Vaheguru will
be able to save himself and his entire family even if his death occurs in the cursed land of
Haramba. || 3 || The Formless Vaheguru – Akalpurakh abides in those hearts, who are neither
dependent upon day nor night, nor upon the Vedas and Shaastras for their salvation. Kabeer

Vaheguru – Akalpurakh does not get impressed by your singing of His Praises, through musical
Ragas and the sound current of the Naad, or by reading various religious books, and by using
so many other ritualistic paths. || Those who are filled with fraud and corruption within — what
good does it do for them to cry out to impress others? || Because Vaheguru -The Creator knows
everything that goes on in the minds of people, although they may try their best to cover up their
sins and the diseases they are suffering from. || O Nanak, those who have purified their hearts
by following the instructions of the Guru, resort only to devotional worship of Vaheguru ji. || 4 ||

Singing in Ragas, playing various musical instruments or reciting the Vedas does not please
Vaheguru. || Intuitive wisdom, meditation or Yoga is not the ways to please Vaheguru. || One
can not please Vaheguru by feeling sad and depressed forever – a method used by one of the
sect of India. || Beauty, wealth and pleasures do not impress Him. || He is not convinced even if
one wanders around naked or goes to places of pilgrimage. || Donations in charity also do not
impress Him. || Living alone in the wilderness can not please Him. || Fighting and dying as a
warrior in the battle does not impress Him. || He is not pleasedeven if someone submerges
oneself in dust. || O Nanak, Vaheguru-Akalpurakh gets impressed only if one stays deeply
absorbed in His Naam. That too, if the recitation of Naam is done from the core of one’s heart. ||

Why do you go in search of Vaheguru in the forest? Vaheguru-Akalpurakh, who is present in

you just like the fragrance lives in the flower, and like the reflection in the mirror. Search for Him
within your own heart, O seekers of Truth. || 1 || My Guru has bestowed upon me this
knowledge to feel the presence of Vaheguru inside as well as outside. Nanak, the slave says

O gardener, You have plucked the leaves by tearing their life into pieces. That stone idol, for
which you tore off these lively leaves, is without any life. || 1 || This gardener is mistaken. The
True Guru is the Living Lord. || 1 || Pause || According to your own belief, the leaves indicate
the presence of Brahma – the creator in them, the branches which carry the food to the leaves
indicate the presence of Vishnu – the sustainer, and the flowers – the last stage before fall
(death) indicates the presence of Shiva. You have plucked all the three gods of your conception
right before my eyes, whose service are you performing? || 2 || The sculptor has carved the
stone and designed it into an idol by placing his feet upon its chest. If this stone god were true, it
would have devoured the sculptor for this act! || 3 || Rice and beans, delicious puddings of all
kinds, which are placed before the idol are all consumed by the priest, while this idol gets
nothing but dust. || 4 || This gardener is mistaken, and so is the world, but I am not mistaken.
Says Kabeer, that Vaheguru-Akalpurakh has saved me from committing this mistake by

His outward appearance does not tally with his dealings. || There is no love in his heart, he
simply does the lip service. || The Omniscient Vaheguru is very smart. He is not impressed by
outward showmanship. || One who does not practice what one preaches to others, shall for
sure, keep falling in the cycle of birth and death. || One whose inner being has become the
abode of the Formless Vaheguru — by his teachings, the world is saved. || Those who have
become Your favorite through their actions, have come to know You – Vaheguru Ji. Nanak falls

There are many, who neither listen to the Praises of Vaheguru, nor do they sing Vaheguru’s
Glories themselves, but they try to bring down the sky with their egotistic talks. || 1 || What can
anyone say to such people or guide them to the righteous path? One should always stay away
from such people whom Vaheguru-Akalpurakh has excluded from His devotional worship. || 1 ||
Pause || They do not offer even a handful of water to others, while they slander the one who
brought forth a big river like Ganges. || 2 || Whether they are sitting down or standing up, they
always think of applying crooked and evil ways to meet their selfish ends. Through their actions,
they have ruined themselves, and now they are bent upon instigating others to follow their evil
path. || 3 || They know nothing except evil talk. They would not even listen to the advice of the
most knowledgeable and experienced individual. || 4 || They themselves are lost, and they
mislead others as well. They are so stupid that they sleep comfortably in a house after setting it
on fire. || 5 || They have the audacity of laughing at others, while they themselves are full of
defects. Kabeer is embarrassed looking at such people. || 6 || 1 || 44 ||

Those, who merely chant Vaheguru’s Name, while constantly practicing deception, shall never
be able to purify their heart. They may perform all sorts of rituals, day and night, but they shall
never find peace, even in their dreams. || 1 || O wise ones, without the Guru, there is no
devotional worship. The untreated cloth does not take up the dye, no matter how much
everyone may wish it. || 1 || Pause || Those, who follows the instinct of their mind - the
Manmukhs may perform jups, meditations, austere self-discipline, fasts and devotional worship,
but their disease won’t go away. Deep within them is the disease of excessive egotism and they
are ruined because of their love for someone other than Vaheguru. || 2 || They may wear
religious robes outwardly like an imposter and may conduct their dealings in a very smart
manner, but they will not be able to stop their mind from wandering in ten different directions.
Engrossed in ego, they fail to put into practice the instructions of their Guru. That is the reason
of their reincarnation over and over again. || 3 || O Nanak, only that person, who is blessed by
Vaheguru’s Grace will develop an understanding of Vaheguru; that humble servant will keep
Vaheguru’s Naam deep down in his/her memory. By the Grace of Guru, that person will
understand the One Vaheguru, and will merge with the One Vaheguru. || 4 || 4 || 13 ||

One can not feel the taste of sweetness just by saying ‘sugar’ ‘sugar’, similarly the coldness
does not go away just by saying ‘Fire’ ‘Fire’. || Nobody’s disease is cured by repeating the name
of the Doctor, no one gets the comfort of money by saying ‘money’ ‘money’. || The fragrance of
sandalwood can not be produced just by saying ‘sandal wood’ ‘sandal wood’, similarly darkness
does not change into light by merely repeating ‘moon’ ‘moon’. || Similarly by just holding
intellectual discussions, one can not obtain high moral and spiritual standards of life. One has to
practice what is learnt from the discussions. || 437 ||

Just as the mouth does not become sweet merely by saying ‘sugar’ ‘sugar’ until one
puts the sugar in one’s mouth. || Just as in the darkness of the night, the darkness does
not go away merely by saying ‘lantern’ ‘lantern’ unless the lantern is lighted. || Just as by
repeating the word – knowledge, knowledge is not attained unless the wisdom given by
the Guru makes a home in the heart. || Similarly one can not get to concentrate on the
Guru by merely saying ‘Gurudhyan’ ‘Gurudhyan’ unless one takes full advantage of the
vision of the Guru by accepting and putting into practice the instructions of the Guru. ||

To take what rightfully belongs to some one else, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu
eating beef. || The Guru or Spiritual Guide, stands by those, who do not eat these dead bodies –
the things that belongs to someone else. || One can not go to heaven by talks alone. Practicing
the Truth is the only way to get salvaged. || Adding spices of baseless talks to the forbidden
food does not make it acceptable for consumption. || O Nanak, from false fruitless talks, one can
expect nothing but falsehood. || 2 ||
There are five traditional Namaz - prayers of Muslims and five times of day for prayer;
these five prayers are known by five names. || Let the first be the prayer of truthfulness, the
second of honest living, and the third of charity in the Name of God. || Let the fourth be the
prayer of good will to all, and the fifth of the praise of the Supreme Lord. || Repeat the Kalma –
the prayer of good deeds, and then and then only, you may call yourself a Musalmaan. || O
Nanak, those who are devoid of these prayers are traders of falsehood and such people have
nothing but falsehood in them. || 3 ||
Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass. || When the True Guru is
pleased, we find the treasure of the jewels, deep within ourselves. || Without the Guru, no one
has found this treasure. The traders of falsehood who are blinded with materialism have wasted
their life in vain. || The manmukhs, who follow the instinct of their own mind are so engrossed in
Maya that they die without knowing the Truth. || Without the One Vaheguru-Akalpurakh, there is
no other at all. Unto whom should they put forth their problems? || Some are destitute, and
wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth. || Without Vaheguru’s
Name, there is no other wealth that is worth anything. Everything else is just poison and ashes.
|| O Nanak, Vaheguru is the Commander and Doer of everything and by His Hukam -

Vaheguru dwells very close to all of us and takes care of us all, but rare are those Gurmukhs –
looks through the eyes of the Guru, who understand this fact. || Without the Fear of Vaheguru,
there is no devotional worship. Imbued with the Word of the Guru, eternal peace is attained. || 1
|| The Naam of Vaheguru is such a superb spiritual wisdom and a priceless treasure. One who
obtains this through one’s Guru, enjoys its subtle essence and gets honor in this world and the
world hereafter. || 1 || Pause || Everyone talks about spiritual wisdom and spiritual
knowledge. They keep talking, they argue, and suffer. || No one can stop talking and discussing
about it. Without falling in love with the subtle essence, there is no liberation. || 2 || Spiritual
wisdom and concentration all comes from the Guru. By following the lifestyle of Truth, the
Absolute Truth - Vaheguru comes to dwell in the mind. || The self-willed manmukhs only talk
about it, but do not practice it in their daily life. One can find no place to rest if one forgets the
Name of Vaheguru. || 3 || Maya has caught the mind and entrapped it in the net of
attachment. Each and every heart has the bait of poison and sin. || Whosoever has come into
this world is bound to die. The purpose of coming into this world will get fulfilled, if you
contemplate Vaheguru deep down in your heart. || 4 || He alone should be considered a
knowledgeable person, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Shabad of the Guru. The
self-willed manmukh loses his honor under the influence of ego. || The Creator Lord Himself
inspires us to His devotional worship. He Himself blesses the Gurmukhs – who follow the
instructions of their Guru, with glorious greatness. || 5 || Without Vaheguru this life is like a
dark night, while the Divine Light of Vaheguru is capable of illuminating it. Those who lack the
Naam of Vaheguru, are false, filthy and untouchable. || The Vedas preach sermons of
devotional worship. Those who listen, hear and believe in it, can see this Divine Light of
Vaheguru. || 6 || The Shaastras and Simritees emphasize the importance of Naam. Those
who follow the instructions of their Guru, do the noble task of remembering Vaheguru’s Naam
from the core of their heart and thus live in peace and tranquility. || The self-willed manmukhs,
however suffers the pains of reincarnation. Their bonds are broken if they enshrine the Name of
the One Vaheguru in their heart. || 7 || Believers of His Naam get true honor and adoration.
Who should I see? There is none other than the Vaheguru. || Nanak Says: I see, and I say, that

Everyone does lip service to Vaheguru’s Name, but by merely saying, Raam, Raam
nothing is going to happen. When, by the Grace of Guru, Vaheguru-Akalpurakh comes to dwell

Those who fall in love with Vaheguru Ji, they never forget Him; they always keep
Vaheguru Ji deep down in their conscious mind. || 1 || Pause ||
Those who are filled with fraud from inside but are known as saints because of their
outward show — their greed for material things never gets fulfilled, and they realize their
mistake after departing from this world, when it is too late. || 2 ||
Even if some one may bathe at many places of pilgrimage, still, the inner ego of the mind does
not go away. Unless the sense of duality of a person does not depart, he/she can not escape
the punishment of the Righteous Judge of Dharma - Vaheguru. || 3 ||
Only that person upon whom Vaheguru showers His Mercy, merges with Him; This secret
becomes clear only to those, who follow the guidelines of the Guru. O Nanak, when one

Burn the feelings of worldly attachments and grind it down to prepare ink. Using this ink, let the
scribe - consciousness write the instructions given to you by your Guru with the pen of His love
on the purest paper of your intelligence. Write the Name of the Vaheguru, write His Praises;
write the fact that there is no end to His limits. || 1 || O Baba, learn to write is such a way, so
that when an account is asked for, it may become your true savior. || 1 || Pause || Only those
will be honored with the Mark of Grace and bestowed with greatness, eternal peace and
everlasting joy, who have Vaheguru’s Naam deep down in their hearts. Such a stage is

into this world, and they keep on leaving and this cycle continues. Many of them call themselves
by various lofty names. Some are born beggars, whereas others have large palaces under their

load of my words upon my head. The real fruitful talks are those which are said in praise of the
Creator Vaheguru. My eating, drinking and laughing is all in vain unless Vaheguru is not
cherished in my heart. || 1 || Why should one care for anything else, if throughout his life, one
gathers the wealth that is truly worth gathering? || 1 || Pause || Because of all this the intellect
of our mind has started behaving like a drunken elephant. Under the influence of ego whatever
we utter does not turn out right – we keep committing mistakes after mistakes. With what face
should we stand before you to pray, when our virtues and vices are both standing before us as

become. Without You, there is no one else to guide us. Whatever wisdom You bestow upon
people, so do they receive. You run the affairs of the world according to Your Own sweet will. ||

essence of Ambrosial Nectar is produced. O Nanak, if anyone gets blessed with the
understanding of this reality, then this is the wealth and property of the Creator Vaheguru that

There are many that claim that they have realized Vaheguru, who is beyond limit and beyond

talk, the mind is not appeased. The mind is only appeased, when ego is eliminated. || 2 || As
long as the mind is filled with the desire to go to heaven, this mind will never be able to realize

No amount of speaking can satisfy the mouth, and the thirst of hearing of the ears will
never be quenched. The eyes have an unending crave of looking at others and there is no end
to it. Each organ is a customer of only one kind of sensory quality. The hunger of these hungry
organs is not appeased; this hunger is not relieved even by strong persuasion. O Nanak, hunger
is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Qualities of Vaheguru. This is the
way to merge with the Virtuous Vaheguru || 2 ||
Without getting attached to the Absolute Reality - Vaheguru, all are false, and all practice
falsehood. Without getting attached to the Absolute Reality - Vaheguru, the traders of falsehood
are bound and driven off by the forces of materialism. Without getting attached to the Absolute
Reality - Vaheguru, this body of ashes mingles again with ashes without doing anything
worthwhile. Without getting attached to the Absolute Reality - Vaheguru, greed for food and
clothes keep on increasing. Without getting attached to the Absolute Reality - Vaheguru, one
does not attain the Vaheguru’s Court by sticking to falsehood. Attached to false greed, one
looses the chance to meet Vaheguru. The whole world is deceived by deception. That is the
reason of our coming to and going from this world. Within the body is the fire of desires, which
can only be extinguished by the water of the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. || 19 ||

This is the condition of human beings. Their service is insignificant, but their expectations are
very high. They have reached no where close to the Mansion of Vaheguru Ji, but they boast that

religious robes, but these imposters do not practice Truth. How can one even come close to
Vaheguru Ji’s Mansion just by saying so. || 2 || They claim that they are unattached, but they are
strongly intoxicated with Materialistic wealth. There is no love at all in their mind for Vaheguru-
Akalpurakh, and yet they say that they are in love with God. || 3 || Nanak says, hear my prayer,
O God: This human being is silly, stubborn and filled with sexual desire — please, liberate them
from all these vices! || 4 || You are the Giver of Peace and Comfort, the Loving Primal Being.
Bless us with this greatness so that we may have Your Vision (i.e. we may come closer to you).

slandering others; I was taught, but I never learned. || 1 || How can I even describe my actions?
The way I wasted my life. Nanak says, My inside is filled with all kinds of flaws. I have come to
