Something good happened to me, I got saved from the influence of ego. As I placed my faith in
the True Guru all the evil energies have come to serve me. I have renounced my attachment to
Maya when I found the True, Carefree Waheguru. || 1 || O my mind, fear will go away after
meeting the True One. Without the Fear of (Caring for) God, how can anyone become fearless?
This stage comes when one gets absorbed in the Shabad through the guidance of the Guru. ||
1 || Pause || People keep on demanding gifts and they never stop asking for more. There is no
dearth of beggars, but there is only One Giver. Real peace and tranquility is achieved when
Waheguru, the Giver of the soul and the breath of life reside in the heart. || 2 || The world is a
dream where the mortal is made to play a role. In a moment, the play will be over. Some attain
union with the Lord, while others depart without achieving a union. Whatever pleases Him
happens; nothing else can be done. || 3 || The True Merchandise is obtained through the Guru,
who guides to use the True Capital to buy it. Those who purchase this True Merchandise get
the blessings of the Perfect Guru. O Nanak, one who stocks this True Merchandise understands
and recognizes the Genuineness of this wealth. || 4 || 11 ||

Wealth, the beauty of youthfulness and flowers are your guests for only a short period of time.
Like the leaves of the water-lily, they wither and fade and finally die. || 1 || Enjoy the company of
Waheguru and get eternal peace, dear friend, so long you are young and energetic. Very soon
when only a few days of your life will be left, you will start to grow weary and the body of your
soul will grow old. || 1 || Pause || My dear friends have gone to sleep in the graveyard. I am
crying due to their separation. In my double-mindedness, I do not realize that I shall have to go
as well. || 2 || Haven’t you heard the call from beyond, O beautiful soul-bride? You must go to
the house of your in-laws; you cannot stay with your parents forever. || 3 || O Nanak, know
that she who carelessly sleeps in her parents’ home gets plundered in broad daylight. She
looses her bouquet of merits and departs after gathering all the demerits. || 4 || 24 ||

All are Your Creation, and You belong to all. You are the wealth of everybody. Everyone offer
prayers to You routinely and beg from You. Those, unto whom You give, receive everything.
You seem so far away to some, and so close to others. Is there any other place other than
Yours, O Lord, where from we can get our demands fulfilled? Weigh it out in your mind. Even
though the entire world sings Your praises but those who act upon the teachings of the Guru get
special consideration in the Court of Waheguru. || 9 ||

Waheguru can make the meat eaters like tigers, hawks, falcons and eagles eat grass. And
those animals which eat grass may start eating meat. He could easily change the eating habits
of His Creatures. He could raise dry land from the rivers, and turn the deserts into deep oceans.
He could make a worm to be a king, and make him capable of reducing a large army to ashes.
All beings and creatures live by breathing, but He could keep them alive, even without the
breath, if He so desires. O Nanak, as it pleases the True Lord - Waheguru, He gives us
sustenance. || 1 ||

(O Creator Lord!) You saved Khuraasaan from getting attacked but terrified India. The Creator
does not take the blame Himself. That’s why He sent the Moghul (Emperor Babar) as the
messenger of death. There was so much torture and killing that the people were screaming but
You remained pain-free. || 1 || O Lord, You are the Creator of all (Moghuls as well as the
Indians). One does not feel that much grief upon seeing one powerful person striking at another
equally powerful individual. || 1 || Pause || But the owner of the flock of cows is answerable
for the tragedy that results when a mighty lion attacks and kills them. These ferocious dogs
have defiled and ruined the precious jewels (inhabitants of the country) and no one paid any
attention to the dead. You Yourself unite people and You Yourself separates them. I am
amazed at Your Glorious Greatness. || 2 || So what if one earns a great name in public and
engages oneself in all kinds of worldly pleasures. But in the Eyes of the Lord and Master,
he/she is merely a worm, for all the corn that he/she eats. Only one who kills one’s ego in this
very life, earns Waheguru’s blessings, O Nanak, by chanting His Name. || 3 || 5 || 39 ||

Those heads that were filled with vermillion and adorned with beautifully braided hair are being
shaved, and their throats are choking with dust. They used to live in palatial mansions, but now,
they are not even allowed to come near the palaces. || 1 || Hail to You, O Waheguru, Hail to
You. O The very First existing Personality! Your limits are not known to anybody; You make
things to happen Yourself and You watch Your creation. || 1 || Pause || The day they got
married, their husbands looked so handsome beside them. They came in palanquins with their
arms decorated with ivory bangles; they were received with great pomp & show and glittering
fans were waved over them. || 2 || They received gifts worth hundreds of thousands of Rupees
as they arrived at the groom’s house. They ate coconuts and dates, and rested comfortably
upon their beds. Their necks are now tied with ropes and their strings of pearls were broken. ||
3 || Their wealth and youthful beauty, which gave them so much pleasure in life have now
become their enemies. The orders were given to the soldiers to dishonor them, and take them
away. This is how the System of Waheguru works - If it pleases Him, He bestows greatness
upon people; if it pleases Him, He orders to punish them. || 4 || If we understand and perform
our duty and focus our attention on Waheguru beforehand, then there is no reason to get
punished. The kings had lost their higher consciousness and sense of duty, reveling in pleasure
and sensuality. Since Babar’s rule has been proclaimed, even the princes (of India) do not get
any food to eat. || 5 || The Muslim prisoners lost track of their Namaz(Muslim prayer) time and
the Hindu prisoners skipped their Pooja(Hindu prayer) time. Neither are the sacred kitchens left
nor the Hindu women, who have a place to bathe and apply the frontal marks on their
foreheads. They never remembered their Lord Rama in their life, and now they cannot come
closer to God even if they utter Khudaa so many times to please their Muslim masters’ || 6 ||
Some have returned to their homes, and meeting their relatives, they ask about their welfare.
For some, it is pre-ordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain. Whatever pleases Him,
happens. O Nanak, there is nothing in the hands of human being. || 7 || 11 ||

Where are the games (The soldiers used to play), the stables, and the horses? Where are the
drums and the bugles? Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those red uniforms
of Army men? Where are the people with handsome faces, who used to look at their images in
the mirrors? They are no longer to be seen here (in the city of Saidpur). || 1 || This world is
Yours, O Waheguru; You are the Lord of the Universe. In an instant, You establish and
disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. || 1 || Pause || The beautiful houses, the
gates, the hotels and palaces are no where to be seen. Where are those beautiful Inns? Where
are those comfort-giving wives on their beds, which used to take away the sleep of their
husbands? Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the veiled women? They have all
vanished like shadows. || 2 || For the sake of this materialistic wealth, so many people were
ruined and so many have been disgraced. It can not be accumulated without committing sin,
and it does not go along with us when we die. When the Creator-Waheguru wants people to go
astray, He strips them of their virtue. || 3 || When they (Ruling Pathaans) heard that the
Emperor (Babur) is coming to invade the country, they detained millions of religious leaders in
the hope of nullifying the effect of the invasion or halt the invader. The invaders burned the rest-
houses and the ancient temples; they cut the princes into pieces and left their limbs in the field.
None of the Moghuls became blind as claimed by the religious leaders, and no one performed
any miracle. || 4 ||The battle raged between the Moghuls and the Pathaans, and their swords
clashed in the battlefield. The Moghuls aimed their guns at them, whereas the Pathaans moved
forward with their elephants. Those, who were pre-ordained to die as per the orders of
Waheguru, will have to die, O brother. || 5 || No one was spared. The victims were Hindu
women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs. Some had their robes torn away, from
head to foot, while others ended up in the cremation ground. How would they have spent their
night whose husbands did not return home? || 6 || Whom should we lodge this complaint? The
Creator - Waheguru Himself does all this, and makes others to do it. Pleasure & comfort as well
as pain & sufferings are all according to Your Will; Of what use are our gripes and complaints?
The Commander issues His orders, at His pleasure. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our
destiny. || 7 || 12 ||

The Yogis, the celibates, the austere penitents, and all sorts of intelligent people have failed
after exhausting all their efforts to find out the exact nature of God. || 1 || Pause || In an
instant, He converts the beggar into a king, and the king into a beggar. He fills the empty
vessels, and empties the ones that are full. Such are His ways. || 1 || He Himself spread out
the expanse of His Maya, and He Himself watches over it. He assumes so many forms, and
plays so many games, and yet He remains distinct and detached from all of it. || 2 || The
Incalculable, infinite, incomprehensible and immaculate, Waheguru has misled the whole world
(by attaching it to Maya). So shed all your doubts; prays Nanak, O mortal and focus your
consciousness on His Feet (Waheguru). || 3 || 1 || 2 ||

As the Word of my master - Waheguru comes to me, so do I express it, O Lalo. He (Babar) has
rushed from Kaabul with the marriage party of sin to forcibly possess the country as his bride, O
Lalo. Modesty and righteousness both have vanished, and falsehood is walking around like a
leader, O Lalo. The Qazis and the Brahmins have no roles to play, and it is Satan, who
conducts the marriage rites, O Lalo. The Muslim women in their time of misery, read the Koran
and call upon God for help, O Lalo. The Hindu women of high social status, and others of lowly
status as well, are also suffering the torture, O Lalo. The wedding songs soaked in blood are
being sung, O Nanak, and blood is sprinkled in place of saffron, O Lalo. || 1 || Nanak sings the
Glorious Praises of the Lord and Master in the city of corpses, and voices this account. The One
who created the universe, and attached the mortals to pleasures, sits alone, and watches this.

The Lord & Master is True, and True is His justice. He issues His Commands according to His
Judgment. The body-fabric will be shreds into pieces and India will remember these words.
They will come in seventy-eight (1521 A.D.), they will leave in ninety-seven (1540 A.D.), and
then another great personality will rise up (and conquer India). Nanak speaks the Word of Truth;
he proclaims the Truth as this is the right time to speak the Truth. || 2 || 3 || 5 ||

At times, people pick and choose between various delicacies and do not appreciate when they

O King of kings, Waheguru! I do not know the limits of Your Creation. May I remain a humble
slave of Your Saints - devotees? || 1 || Pause || I am amazed at the way things happen in Your
world. Those, who go laughing return crying, and those who go crying return laughing. What is
inhabited becomes a ruin, and a ruin may become inhabited. || 1 || You may turn the water
deposits into a desert, the desert may turn into a well, and the well turns into a mountain. From
the earth, the mortal may be raised to sky high and from exalted status, he may be thrown down
again. || 2 || The beggar is transformed into a king, and the king into a beggar. He may convert
an illiterate and foolish person to be a scholar and transform a scholar into a fool. || 3 || The
woman may get transformed into a man, and the men into women, if He so desires. Kabeer
says, I am a sacrifice at the Great Personality of Waheguru, Who is the Beloved of His
Devotees - Saints. || 4 || 2 ||
