Title of lesson: Presentation Introduction PBS LearningMedia Storyboard

6th Grade ELA

Unit: Informational Reading (Assigning summative project)

ISTE Standard Addressed:

6d: Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their
intended audience.

Content Standard(s) Addressed:

SL.6.1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others
ideas and expressing their own clearly.

RI.6.9. Compare and contrast one authors presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a
memoir written by and a biography on the same person).

Learning outcomes:
1. Students will use appropriate technology resources to present information in their own
words.
2. Students will be able synthesize research in a presentation for a specific audience.

Brief description of lesson:

Total Class Time: 55 Minutes
Unit Title: Informational Reading

3 Minutes Bell Ringer Activity: Students will talk to their elbow partner about types of
presentation tools they are familiar with. They will see the instructions posted in
Google Classroom and will know they will be sharing out with the class the information
they talked about with their partner.
3 Minutes Share Out With Class: Students will take turns sharing what was
discussed with their partner.
15 Minutes Assignment Introduction: Students will be introduced to the summative
assignment. Students will be told that based on all of the research they have been
gathering of their own plant/fruit/vegetable, they will be creating a Storyboard via PBS
LearningMedia to present to a fifth-grade class. Students will be handed the rubric for
the summative assessment. Each student will present an individual Storyboard to one
of two fifth-grade classes. Students will review the project in full and will be assigned
the due date (long-term goal) as well as the short-term goals for each day of the
project. Students will have four days in class to complete their Storyboard before they
present them to the fifth-grade class. The overall goal of the assignment is to present
information in a customized way and teach fifth-graders about not only a specific
fruit/vegetable/plant, but to also teach them why it is important.
10 Minutes Student Examples: Students will then be shown a few examples of past
student examples of the Storyboard so they have a reference guide for what they
should be putting together.
5 Minutes Student Questions: Time will be given for student questions to ask about
any part of the final project that they need.
20 Minutes Begin Working: Students will have class time to begin working on the
PBS LearningMedia Storyboard. They will not have any specific short-term goal set for
the first day but will instead become acquainted with the website and learn how it
functions. If more time is needed in other areas of the lesson introduction and
explanation, the work time can be shortened.

Technology used (by both teachers and students):

https://wgvu.pbslearningmedia.org/ - Students will be using 1:1 Chromebook devices to create
an individual Storyboard via PBS LearningMedia. Students will each create a PBS Account in
order to complete their Storyboard. Using PBS LearningMedia, the instructor will assign the
Storyboard to each individual student.

Justification of need for technology:

o The first High-Leverage Practice used in this lesson is explaining and modeling
content, practices, and strategies. Because this is the introduction of the
assignment, students will see examples of modeling from the instructor of how
to use the information they have gathered on their chosen plant/fruit/vegetable
will be put into a Storyboard. Students will also see examples of past student
work as a frame of reference.
o The second HLP used in the lesson is setting long and short-term learning
goals for students. As students work on creating their Storyboard, they will be
using information that has been previously gathered. The long-term goal set for
students will be the completion of the project while short-term goals will include
specific parts of the Storyboard due throughout the week leading up to when it
is due. The short-term goals set for each class period will help teach sixth
graders how to stay on track with their work and will serve as formative checks
along the way.
The purpose of the technology was to use a relatable mode of delivery to share their
information with the intended audience. Using their Chromebooks to prepare their
Storyboards, students will have the ability to complete their long-term project using class time
wisely.
This particular lesson could not be complete without technology, however, it could be
completed without the Chromebook. As long as students had access to an iPad or computer,
the assignment could be completed.
The technology is specifically related to the learning outcomes in that students must use the
Storyboard feature to create an appropriate presentation for the fifth grade classroom
audience. Students must be able to use the information they have previously researched and
transfer it into a presentation, summarizing what they have learned in their own words.
Because students will have short-term goals throughout the projects creation, students
should not have to work on the assignment at home. Using short-term goals as part of a
formative check, students without technology at home should not struggle to have the project
complete by the due date.

How will you formatively and summatively assess whether standards/outcomes were
met/achieved?
Formative: Students will have short-term goals set throughout the 4-day project creation
period. At the end of each class period, students will be required to have completed one
portion of their Storyboard. This will be related to the learning goal and the ISTE standard that
requires students to make sure that both their content and medium are on track for the
intended fifth grade audience. If at the end of a class period, students have not met the short-
term goal or have not been successful in customizing the content for the intended audience,
immediate feedback will be given.
Summative: Students will be evaluated on the overall presentation, or mode of delivery to the
intended fifth grade audience. Students will also be evaluated on whether or not their ideas
are relatable and understandable for the students they are presenting to.
Storyboard Presentation
PBS LearningMedia

Using the plant/vegetable/fruit research that you have done, you will be creating a Storyboard
to present to a fifth-grade class. Your goal is to take the research you have gathered and
present the content in a way that an elementary student can understand. You must keep your
audience in mind as you create your presentation.

Your Storyboard will include a summary of your research (6-10 sentences), pictures, videos,
interviews, and any other research you have gathered pertaining to your selected
plant/vegetable/fruit. To make sure that your audience understands the information you are
presenting, you will develop two questions to ask the class at the end of the presentation.

During the week, you will have parts of your Storyboard due at the end of each class period.
Work hard to make sure these assigned parts are done when they are due!
