Integration Application Problems

1.) Economics: The net worth, (), of a company is growing at a rate of () = 2000 12 2
dollars per year, where t is in years since 2005. How is the net worth of the company expected
to change between 2005 and 2015? If the company with worth $40,000 in 2005, what is it worth
in 2015?

2.) The Environment: The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences
because certain gases prevent heat from escaping the atmosphere. According to one study, the
temperature is rising at the rate of 0.014 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit per year, where t is the
number of years since 2000. Given that the average surface temperature of the earth was 57.8
degrees Fahrenheit in 2000, predict the temperature in 2200.

3.) Neurons: Neurons (nerve cells) provide most of the important functions of the nervous system,
such as controlling muscle activity, sensing, thinking, remembering, and regulating glandular
secretions. They consist of three basic parts: the dendrites, the cell body, and the axon.
Electrical signals and chemical messengers are used in order for neurons to transmit and receive
information. The dendrites receive information which is then passed down to the cell body and
then travels down the axon. These pulse-like waves of voltage that travel along the axons are
known as action potentials.

Assume that the rate of change in voltage v of a neuron with respect to time follows the
1
differential equation = 1 + 1.2 0.2 , over the course of 100 milliseconds, where t is
measured in milliseconds and v in millivolts. Assume v(0) = 70. Integrate the equation to
express voltage as a function of time. What is the voltage after 100 milliseconds?

4.) Car testing: Some manufacturers testing a car find that when the car is traveling at 50 mi/h, a
full application of the brakes produces a constant deceleration of 26 ft/s2. What can the
manufacturers conclude is the stopping distance of the car (i.e. what is the distance traveled
before the car comes to a stop hint: it is at a stop when velocity is 0)?
5.) Baseball: The weight of a standard baseball is .149 kilograms. When a pitcher throws the ball, a
certain amount of work is applied to the ball to raise its speed from 0mph to the speed of the
pitch. As the speed of the baseball increases, the work done by the pitcher accumulates
according to the change in momentum of the ball, given by the equation p=mv where p is
momentum, m is the mass of the object, and v is the velocity of the object. We find the amount
of work done on the ball by integrating the equation for momentum with respect to velocity (i.e.
finding the area under the momentum curve when velocity is our independent variable). With
this, can you find the amount of work a pitcher must do to throw a 90 mph (40.2 m/s) pitch? A
100.9 mph (45.1 m/s) pitch?

6.) Horses and Bananas: A hungry hungry horse named Horatio is so so hungry. Luckily for Horatio,
his drifting horse raft has stumbled upon Banana Island, land of bananas aplenty! While Horatio
has never had too keen of an eye for the banana, he is just so stinkin hungry that they look like
the yellow and brownest best potassium packed snacks in the world today. With his insatiable
horse hunger, Horatio starts eating every banana in sight! When he gets to the island, there are
50,000
52,300 bananas and he starts eating the bananas at a rate of bananas per hour. Horatio

also knows from the legends that bananas grow on Banana Island at an oscillating rate of
300 sin() + 300 bananas per hour. After 5 hours of insane gluttony, how many bananas will be
left on Banana Island?
