Weekly Self Evaluation

Week 4
Manaia Genovia

SLO: Apply the ANA Code of Ethics to care of families including client rights,
dilemmas between individual rights and the common good, identification of
choices and possible consequences.
This week in clinical, I was assigned to an eight-year old male with an extensive
past medical history and developmental delay who was admitted for acute respiratory
distress. I applied SLO 1 by carrying out my nursing responsibilities in a consistent
manner regardless of his diagnosis, level of orientation and awareness. My patient
was the most difficult assignment Ive ever had in nursing school so far. However, I
enjoyed every minute of taking care of him. I was in my patients room for majority of
the day because he required close monitoring and frequent trach suctioning. It was a
challenge to organize my nursing care, medication administration, IV monitoring, and
accommodation towards other health care members.

SLO: Apply basic leadership skills in the care of families

This week in clinical, I cared for an eight-year old male who required total care and
close monitoring. My patients mother, the primary caregiver, was very helpful in
explaining his basic routines and preferences. I am glad I got to witness her providing
care for him so I could follow the same pattern and provide consistency in my nursing
care. I was worried that I would not be able to complete my nursing tasks because his
mother was constantly addressing his needs before I could. I suggested to his mother
that she could sit down and enjoy her breakfast while I suction him and assess his lung
sounds. She watched my actions and commented on ways of improvement, which I
appreciated and implemented to improve my nursing care.

Self Evaluation
I am really glad that I was assigned to my patient because I was able to
implement new skills and learn about what I dont know how to do efficiently. There was
always so much going on that it was hard to catch my breath and remember what I
needed to do. Medication administration is very important and I was late on giving an IV
medication by 30 minutes because I was focused on the wrong thing at the wrong time.
To improve, I will go to the resource skills lab to practice skills before going to our last
clinical of the semester this week. I will also make sure that I have all the information I
need while filling out my CIS so I can properly take care of my patient and know that the
orders Im following are appropriate to his age and condition. Overall, this week was
very overwhelming but I know I can make improvements with time and practice.
