COURSE TITLE HDFS 2000 Marriage and Family in a Global
Context 11

SPECIFIC TOPIC
Theoretical Perspectives on Parent-Child Relations PLAN
DAILY LESSON
INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL (outcome that students should be able to demonstrate upon completion of the entire unit)
From: http://www2.honolulu.hawaii.edu/facdev/guidebk/teachtip/lesspln3.htm
The students after completing this unit will be able to describe different theories and
research that guide program development for parents and relate them to parent-child
exchanges.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE (use an action verb in a description of a measurable outcome)

Given examples of parent-child interactions, students will explain what developmental
theory is appropriate and why it applies to the specific scenario with 90% accuracy.

RATIONALE (brief justification -- why you feel the students need to learn this topic)
Childrens experiences are often softened by parents and other caregivers as the first
ecological protecting proxies in an environment. They may be considered the best defense
a child has in their life. Therefore, the consistency and stability of the parent and caregiver
are crucial to development (Hawley & DeHaan, 1996). In addition, parents serve as a
childs first teacher and introduce them to the social, cognitive, physical, and emotional
aspects of the world. How are these parent-child relationships formed? Since individuals
interested in the field of Human Development and Family Studies will likely interact with
parents and their children this topic will provide a base of skills and knowledge to work
with parents of diverse families by establishing a critical foundation for the theoretical
framework underpinning the relationships they have formed.
