EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES 2

INTRODUCTION

Many engineers, economists, and environ-

mental scientists are working on the problem of meeting the
increasing energy demands of a growing global population.
One promising solution to this problem is power generated
by wind-driven turbines.
The cost of wind-generated power has fallen from $0.25
per kilowatt hour (kWh) in the early 1980s to about $0.043
per kWh in 2000; thus, using this form of power production
is becoming economically feasible. And compared to the
cost of pollution from burning coal and oil, wind-generated
power may be less expensive.
An economist for a city might use this equation to try to
compute the cost for electricity for his city:
C P(0.043)(1000)
in which C cost in dollars
P power in megawatts
The city engineer who is investigating the possibility of
building turbines to supply the city with electricity knows
that each turbine can produce 1.1 million kWh of power, so
she uses the equation
2001 McGraw-Hill Companies

P n(1.1)
in which P power in megawatts
n number of turbines required to produce power
The equation is an ancient tool for solving problems and writing numerical
relationships clearly and accurately. In this chapter you will learn methods to solve
linear equations and practice writing equations that accurately describe problem
situations.
