Lesson three Day three

Daily topic: Eastern European Immigration Statistics- High school Statistics

Lesson Plan Author: Amanda Smith
Goals:
Common Core State Standards:
S-ID-A.1 Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot lines, histogram, box
plots)
S-ID-A.2 Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center
(median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more
different data sets.
S-ID-A.3 Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets,
accounting for possible effects of extreme data points (outliers).
S-ID-C.7 Interpret the slope (rate of change) and the intercept (constant term) of a linear
model in the context of the data.
S-ID-C.8 Compute (using technology) and interpret the correlation coefficient of a linear
fit.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

- Create a histogram using a set of data.
- Identify key aspects of a data set based on the shape, center, and spread of the data set.

Procedures:
- Do Now: 5 min
o Students will answer the questions below to review content.
How do you find the mean, median, and mode?
What information does the shape, center, and spread of a graph tell you
about the data set?
- Opening: 5 min
o Review the information from do now.
- I do: Teacher Technology Activity 10 min
o Teacher will present the data they will analyze. Discuss anything unusual or
trends students see from the data.
o Teacher will discuss the project, give students directions, and show how students
can find step by step directions on how to use Excel.
o Teacher will show students an example of each step using the step by step notes
and a premade data set.
- You do: 30 min
o In partners, students will look at the data given from the table. Students will pick
one country from Europe they want to analyze. Students will use excel to input
the data from the chosen country from the years 1870-1930.
o Student Technology Activity-
Using excel, students will create a histogram and interpret the shape,
center, and spread of the data set.
Complete the worksheet
Students will create a scatter plot and compute and interpret the slope and
correlation coefficient of the data set.
Complete the worksheet
- Closing: 5 min
o Ask students to discuss any trends or patterns they noticed. Discuss how
analyzing this data can help us analyze the the past.

Materials and Resources

- Excel
- Statistical data of immigrants into the United States
- Internet Link with Instructions to Excel:
- Handout explaining steps of how to use excel
- Worksheet for Part A
- Worksheet for Part B
How do you accommodate students with:
- Special Needs: Preferential seating, extra time, revised task list such as data already in
charts and graphs
- Non-native: translator, directions in native speaking language, extra time,
- Gifted: analyze a different set of data with more data points

Daily evaluation: Students will be assessed on their work on the project. See Rubric
