History of Mothers Day: Anna Jarvis

Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Founder of Mothers Day in US. Though Anna Jarvis never
married and never had kids, she is also known as the Mother of Mothers Day, an apt title for
the lady who worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers.
Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs.
Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood. An activist and social worker, Mrs. Jarvis used
to express her desire that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay
tribute to the contributions made by them.
A loving daughter, Anna never forgot her mothers word and when her mother died in
1905, she resolved to fulfill her mothers desire of having a mothers day. Growing negligent
attitude of adult Americans towards their mothers and a desire to honor her mothers soared
her ambitions.
To begin with Anna, send Carnations in the church service in Grafton, West Virginia to
honor her mother. Carnations were her mothers favorite flower and Anna felt that they sym-
bolized a mothers pure love.
Later Anna along with her supporters wrote letters to people in positions of power lobby-
ing for the official declaration of Mothers Day holiday. The hard work paid off. By 1911,
Mothers Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union and on May 8, 1914 Presi-
dent Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as

Our forefathers worked under difficult conditions for our

better future and we should remember them during this con-

These sentiments were echoed by the High Commissioner
of India Mr Vishvas Sapkal who was the chief guest during the
opening ceremony of Dashin India Andra Sangams (DIAS)
76th convention at Nadis Prince Charles Park on April 14.
The High Commissioner added that the main reason for the
convention was for the members and communities to come
together in unity and he also thanked DIAS for 76 years of
contribution to the society.
The organization is doing a great community service
through education initiatives.
The contributions to education is in the form of five prima-

It is very sad what they went through and despite being
uneducated they fought to make sure that our culture is pre-

Today almost 90% of us are now educated and therefore it
becomes our responsibility to preserve and enhance what they
did for us. It is our duty to preserve our culture and tradition
which was the dream of our great grandparents.
It becomes our paramount duty to give back to society that

The National President added that the Convention is also a

Islands Electric Wholesalers sponsored

Lautoka Muslim soccer team has brought
back lost glory to the Sugar City.
Boasting one current district rep in Mohd
Shazil, and a squad comprising of only
14-players, the side defeated all odds to reign
supreme at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
The Blues are the Vodafone Muslim Inter-
District Championship winners for 2017.
Goal scorers in the final 2-0 win over Valel-
evu were Mohammed Nazif and Tabraz Shah.
Lautoka Muslim soccer team captain Feroz
Ali said the win was important as they had not
won the tournament for a number of years.
He thanked the players for playing their
hearts out and bringing lost glory to the Sugar
City.
We have a few experienced players, and
without a coach I think we did pretty well to
return home with the main trophy, Ali said.
Lautoka Muslim Sports Chairman and team
manager Iqbal Mohammed revealed they even
had to miss national and Lautoka CvC hero
Zibraaz Saheb for the four-day tournament.
Its a historic occasion for us because Lau-
toka has managed to win the IDC after 14-
long years. It was back in 2003 at Govind Park
that we had last won. So its sweet victory,
said Iqbal. The Islands Electric Wholesalers (IEW) Lautoka Muslim soccer team after defeating Valelevu 2-0 in the Vodafone Muslim Inter-District Cham-
