Hello dear apprentices! Welcome to this section about transportation means.

You know all processes require identifying the special tactic for moving different kind of products.
So, transportation is important for the distribution of material from the facilities to the production sites
and from these places to the market centers. Here, we are going to discuss public and private ca -
rriers, as well as operation modes of transportations.

Lets see some generalities which characterize them:

Public and Private carries are bound to legal terms to transport merchandise. As we can see in the
next chart.

Common carriers
These carriers provide services to the public at published rates and charges. They also provide ade -
quate facilities and services at reasonable rates. They are in the business of carrying merchandise or
people.

Contract carriers
These carriers provide different transportation services at rates according to the services provided.
They offer services in equipment and/or products.
They are bonded to a contract.

Exempt carriers
These companies or business operate vehicles that provide services of transportation. We find for
example taxicabs or cargo trucks that are not under the regulations of the Interstate Commerce Act.
In other terms, they work in the market free.

Private carriers
These carriers are operated by the producer or distributor of the cargo, in other words, the company
itself is in charge of transporting its own goods. Even though, they can be hired by outside organiza-
tions, under the restrictions of a contract.

Lets study now the operation modes that are used all over the world, but have a special connotation
for our national context.

The Colombian transportation system has different operational modes such as rail, highway, water,
air, and pipeline. Each transportation system works according to the zone or region where goods are
transported to.

These are the principal features of the transportation means we, in our Colombian context, have.
