Lesson Content Description:
Students sort words ending in ed by their ending sounds (d, t, ed).
Common Core Standard:
1.RF.2d- Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual
sounds (phonemes).
1.RF.3- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
both in isolation and in text
Common Core Lesson Objective:
SWBAT read words using ED spelling pattern and sort them by their ending sound.

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation


Write ed on board and remind students that when these letters are added to the
end of a word, it can make 3 different sounds (/t/, /d/, /ed/)

Using slideshow, show examples of words that end in ed but have the three
different ending sounds.

THROUGH

Write words played, asked, and landed on the board. Say each word and have
students repeat the word. Ask students what sound they hear at the end of each
word.
Repeat with smiled, looked, and handed verbally asking students to name ending
sounds without prompting.
Show Sounds of ed booklet and review sounds and pictures/words with students.
Have students pair share words they find that end with t, d, and ed sounds.

BEYOND

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance


Students complete booklet by cutting and pasting images/words to match ending
sounds. Teacher to circulate to provide additional support as necessary and CFU.
