Materials: Bully Behavior Checklist, drawing paper/markers/crayons, The Sneetches by Dr.

Seuss, Dry erase board & markers or SMARTboard

Procedure:
Introductions: (2-3 minutes) Good morning everyone! Who can tell me what my name
is? Who can tell me what I do here at school?
o Opening up with the same or similar statement each lesson to gauge students
perspective of who I am.
o Ms. Sonnessa, School counselor. I am here to help all the students in three main
domains: social/emotional development, career development, and academics
(Idea taken from observation of another school counselor.)

Definition: (2-3 minutes)

o Can anyone tell me what the word Bullying means?
o Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that
involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the
potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully
others may have serious, lasting problems. (stopbullying.govs definition)
Bystander: Youre not the one being mean: youre the one watching it.
Bully: The individual that is being mean to a kid. Youre the mean one.
Victim: The kid that is being bullied. Someone is being mean to them.
o Bully Behavior Checklist: Handout checklist so students have for future
reference. (Modified from Pinterest/Melissa Rex)
o Talking Points:
Note that many children are involved in bullying now and then, but that
bullying is a serious issue that can have harmful effects on children who
are bulliedand on others in the school environment.
Many children are not convinced that adults are committed to help stop
bullying. Assure students that you and other adult at the school care. Tell
them to report bullying to you so that you can help stop it.
Remind students that everyone at the school has a role to play in helping
to stop bullyingadults and students.

Reading/ Discussion: (20 minutes) The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss.

o Reflect on how the Sneetches treat one another.
Suppose that we were the Sneetches, how would you feel if you had a
star? And, if you had no star? Why would you feel that way?
What are some things or ways that the Star-Bellied Sneetches acted and or
did that you would have done differently?
Possible Answers:
o Included them
o Been friendly
o Say hi
o Invite them to parties
o Looks dont matter
o Be nice

Activities
o K-3rd grade
Creative: (10 minutes) How We Feel About Bullying
Allow students to draw and write how bullying feels. (Display on
monthly bulletin. Students dont have to submit if they do not
want to.)
o 3rd-5th grade
Positive Statements: (5 minutes)
Have students give another classmate one positive trait that they
see in them, while the counselor writes each one on the
SMARTboard or dry erase board.
o How does this feel?

Wrap-up: (2 minutes) Great work today! Lets keep in mind, that just like the Sneetches we can
feel better when we are nice to each other.
Am I being bullied

Issue has happened over and

over again

The same people are involved

What happened was on purpose

It hurt physically or
emotionally (body or feelings)

*If ALL 4 boxes are checked then the behavior is

considered to be bullying, which is not tolerated at
this school. Please talk to your teacher or ask to see
your school counselor.
