I am not a GATE topper, but i have written GATE for 4 times just to be in touch with
core subjects. Ranks were 581, 63, 396, 42. 63 rank was used for my Mtech admission
in IIT Bombay. Normally placements happens in mid of 2nd year. Since I didn't study
for 1.5 years(enjoyed like anything), I couldn't get the job. Then I have worked hard
and did project well. But still I was jobless and wanted to somehow get the job in core
eld, couldn't. I always had a thought that GATE will be my backup option, if don't get
job in my core eld I would get govt. job(through GATE). As I was jobless, I went to
teach for GATE. To my surprise, students gave excellent feedback on my classes. Also
I have got 42 rank and decided to go for job in BHEL.

Life sometimes gives you surprizes. My destiny was changed as I got the job in core
eld so i didn't attend interviews for govt. job. Now I am in very good job with good
salary and job satisfaction.

Lessons I learnt from my story:

1. Do not be too relaxed when you get success.

2. Be condent about yourself
3. When you get success, life gives you lot of options but be choosy about your career.

Edit: Thank you all for your 100+ upvotes. I forgot to mention about other GATE
toppers.
1. Got 300+ rank, and got job in Sony Japan (Rs.20 lakh package)
2. Got 70 rank, continued to Phd
3. 4 people who have joined along with me in Mtech left and joined PSU's
4. Remaining all have got jobs in core companies.
5. Got below 100 rank, joined Mtech, got IES rank and joined Indian railways after
nishing Mtech.
6. Left core job of 12 lakh package and preparing for civils recently written Mains.

and the list goes on.

2011 GATE ECE rst rank holder ( a close friend of mine ) had the highest marks ever
scored in GATE did his M.E at IISc and continuing his PhD there itself. He never
bothered about placements and never sat for one. He is 300% passionate towards
teaching and approaching his dream. Truly inspiring and an awesome guy : ANOOP

Rank 20: He did M.Tech. from IITB. Now, applying for Ph.D too.

Rank 149 : He didn't do anything pertaining to his GATE score. Now, working
in Mentor Graphics. (applied in PSUs, didn't even get interview call)

Rank ~250: He did M.Tech. from IIT, Kanpur. Now, working in chennai.

Rank 323 : I didn't make much of rank. I didn't want to go for M.Tech., can't
make the cut for PSUs.

Rank ~600: M.Tech. from DTU next year.

Rank ~700: M.Tech. from NIT, Trichy next year. Got placed in Freescale
Semiconductor.

GATE 2013

Rank 52: This time, I managed to get a job in BHEL.

In case, you are looking for a general trend. Around 70-80 % are going for PSUs.
Allmost everyone is trying their hand on M.Tech., atleast as a backup plan.

My friend Buchi Reddy Busireddy got All India 1st Rank in GATE 2007, CS branch. We
were still in b.tech 3rd then. A feat I don't know if ever happened before or repeated
after. And he didn't join M.tech but joined a software company and is now in the
silicon valley. It's an inspiration for me being his best buddy to score a below 100 rank
the next year(Had expected below 10 though :( ). One trend his GATE rank has
brought in our college ,Osmania University, is to write GATE seriously and with the
good ranks we scored, to join for M.tech in IITs and IISc, starting from our batch.
