The purpose of this analysis is indentify “food deserts” in Austin,
TX, and to learn about which segments of Austin’s population
are most affected by these food deserts.

METHODOLOGY:

CONCLUSION:
The image to the left shows the areas most densely populated by different races and ethnicities.
The largest food deserts in Austin can be found to the east side of Interstate-35. Additionally, it
can be seen from the image to the left that there are higher percentages of Latinos and African
Grocery Store Locations
Americans residing to the east of I-35. At first glance it might appear that Latino and African
American populations have disproportionately low levels of food accessibility. However, in terms of
percentages whites and Latinos have almost identical levels of accessibility to full service grocery
stores, at 22% and 23% respectively.

GOING FURTHER:
White Population Density A future analysis would go more in depth, analyzing the spatial mismatch between grocery stores
and those without vehicles. An important aspect of food accessibility is realizing that while a person
may not be within the half mile buffer, they are still able to access food because they have a vehicle.
Contrastingly, a person without a vehicle may find that a food source even a half mile away is too
far.
