CCSS Standard : Concept 1: Properties of Earth Materials
Identify the basic properties of Earth materials. PO 6. Describe ways humans use Earth materials
(e.g., fuel, building materials, growing food).
Objective (Explicit):
SWBAT develop a way to demostrate how much food is being wasted everyday at school lunch.
Language Objective:
SWBAT develop a visual to they make from observing and taking data on the food wased in the lunch room
everyday by using graphs and charts.
Evidence of Learning: What will you look for in students work to determine what they know?
(pictures, numbers and words)
- The method the student choose to demostrate their new found knowledge
- Proper labeling foe the visual
- Completion of the sentence stems
Key vocabulary: Materials:
Wasting Computers/ Ipads
Food Banks Paper
Polls Bags
Graph Poster paper
Charts Gloves
Visual Scale
Paper
Pencil
Engage (BEFORE)
What will you say to activate prior knowledge and explain the task?
What is the problem that the students wil be working to solve?
What materials will the students have available to work on, model the problem?
What questions will you ask to be sure students understand the task?
The objective will be written on the board and clear to all students. I will say it out loud to the students. After
it is said aloud the class will stand up and all say it together. I will then ask a student to explain it to me in
their own words.

I will then instruct the class that the lesson for today is going to be a fun packed day that involves quizzes,
investigations, charts and graph making. They will have to be on their best behavior because we will be
exploring different parts of the school. I will also explain to them that if they are not on their best behavior
the major fun parts will have to be taken out and I really do not want that to happen.

Begin the lesson by talking about wasting food and remind students the amount that is wasted in both
America and schools that we learned from the previous day. Bring up those numbers to remind the class
how tremendous it is.

After this is discussed you will take a quick poll on google for how many students actually eat all of their
lunch. If they do not there will be numerous questions below to go in depth about how much they waste.
( Never eats their vegetables = one item, milk vegetables and bread = 3 items and so on).

After the poll is taken spark a quick discussion about what do they do with the leftover food once they finish
eating. Talk about this in the school setting rather then the home. The point of this is to have a nice segway
into the lesson.

Explore (DURING)
What questions or prompts will you be prepared to use with students while they are
exploring?
What extension question will you use for students who solve the problem quickly?

Once they answer the question of how much food they waste make a quick chart on the board.

Begin by telling the students they will be going into the lunch room and collecting all the wasted food that is
thrown away. We will start from the beginning of lunch to the last one of the day. They will seprate the food
items in groups. Their lunches are as followed
1 milk
1 Vegtable
1 fruit
1 main food

There willl be students at every station to collect each item. Some will be in charge of taking the food (2)
throwing it away (2) and the others will take a tally on each items are disposed (2). They will be transitioning
through the class so each has a role (24 students in a class, 4 stations) and will get to take part of each
food. The food will be be in bags and once it is correctly accounted for despose the food.

Once we get back into class ask the question of

So if today we had x amount of items thrown away how much food would be wasted in a week (5 days) ?
So if today we had x amount of items thrown away how much food would be wasted in a month ( 20 days)?
So if today we had x amount of items thrown away how much food would be wasted in a year (180 days)?

These questions should be answered and shown in a variety of ways.

Next once all the answers are completed a visual we be made. I will first show them on the data we got
from the beginning of class a=on how much food they waste. I will have the chart already made and then
have a graph to help them as well. We will do these both together and will ask if they have any questions.

Once they have a full understanding of the task they will splitup into their group of 6 ( 4 groups) and begin
there task. One group will make a graph for how much of each item is wasted in a day, the next will get a
week, then a month and the last group will get a year. They will all have different graphs and will have t
present these at the end of the lesson.

If some students are stuggling I will assist them in making the graph and what type of graph to make.
If some need an extension they will have a graph on one of the other time periods to double check other
groups.
For ELLs I will phyiscally have the food items in front of the class to help remind them of what they are
talking about and the model graph and chart will be displayed as well.

Explain (AFTER)
What questions will you ask to initiate and maintain a discussion about the students
solution/strategies to the problem?
What questions will you ask to help student summarize their learning?
What will you say to summarize the lesson/connect it to the objective?
Have students present their findings to the class. Each group will give a short mini presentation and explain
how they got their answers.

Some questions that will be asked are

- What was the biggest shock to you that you saw today at lunch?
- What are some ways we can decrease the wasting of food?
- What could we do with the food that is not being eaten?
- What will you change now that you know how much food is wasted at school each day?
Exit ticket- Have students complete the following sentence stem and then turn in their graphs as well.
- Today I learned that ____ amount of food is wasted at lunch, now that I know this I am going to
________ to make a difference in the world and stop wasting food.
-

Homework- Have the students go home and record that night how much food Is wasted and what they do
with their leftovers.
