Intern Teacher's Descriptive Report:
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in PSIII, the learning and experience going forward will be
irreplaceable. The staff at Chinook High School were very supportive from day one and it
created a great environment of growth for everyone including myself. Under the
mentorship of Jamie Bach and guidance of Tracy Wong, | felt like | was able to try new
things and had the best possible opportunity to grow as an educator.
My teaching responsibility for my time in practicum wes four grade 9 physical
education /health classes. Each class varied from 27 to 33 students and overall | ended up
teaching 121 individuals. One of the biggest challenges in grade 9 physical education is that
it contains is a variety of attitudes and skill levels are mixed together in one class. This gave
me the opportunity to grow in authentic assessment for activities and differentiate lessons
so that the entire class was engaged. There were also a number of new-to-me units, such as
tchoukball, walking to wellness, rugby, softball, and badminton as well as others that had
to create from scratch, such as nutrition, These units were challenges that helped me grow
and add to my toolbox of resources for future teaching experiences.
I truly enjoyed teaching multiple physical education classes at the same grade level,
Although there are tremendous benefits to teaching a variety of classes, | found it
incredibly valuable to have multiple opportunities to teach the same lesson. Reflection and
implementation was able to take place and by the time I reached to fourth time it was

usually 2 completely different lesson. The dynamics in each class were very interesting. |
had one class that was an even split of bays and girls that were all focussed on common
learning goals and participated well together. Then I had two classes where there were a
few more giris than boys and varied day to day in overall participation. The fourth class had
half as many boysas there were girls and had issues with universal participation. Each
class provided different benefits and challenges based on their different dynamics. I was
able to try a multitude of different classroom management techniques in order to guide the
class toward common learning goals. There was another intern in the same physical
education department and we had opportunities to co-teach classes as well as experiment
with splitting up classes into boys and girls and observing the differences in participation
and effort. These were great opportunities for me to grow in my reflective, assessment, and
classroom management practices.
Basketball has been the sport I have participated in and have coached for multiple years.
During my internship | had the opportunity to step outside my regular coaching comfort
zone and assist the junior varsity girls’ volleyball team. I mostly worked with motivation of
the players and observation of game tactics, the more transferable areas of coaching. When
Iwasn’tattempting to coach in these areas I was learning about the game and strategies
within the game. Our team had a great season, winning multiple tournaments (including a
senior varsity tournament), finishing first in our league, and third in playofis.
Jalso helped coordinate open gym activities during flex times with the other intern in the
physical education department. We provided equipment for different activities which were
predominantly basketball, volleyball, and four-square. The other activities we had were
also soccer and ping-pong. We had a large amount of students come in and take advantage
of these opportunities when they were available. I also was involved in a professional
development group at the school. Our group was geared towards empowering and
providing opportunities for students to take ownership of their school and build a school
culture,
Toadd to my diversity of experiences, | participated in the teacher dance squad for the
school’s annual dance show. It was a fun experience that allowed me to get to know other
staff members, give me a larger appreciation for the time spent by the dance teacher on the
show and student dances, as well as show students that | wasn’t just a teacher and coach. |
also dressed up at Halloween with another intern as Hall and Oates. We had the
opportunity to perform a lip sync fora large portion of the student and staff body at the
school's Halloween event. Lastly I was asked to be the MC for a school's club culinary
competition. These experiences were full of laughter and brightening the days of everyone
around.
Anarea that was new for me this semester was parent contact. I had multiple phone calls
and emails home to notify parents of their child's progress or to touch base in order to
notify parents of issues taking place and discuss ways to fix them. In some cases it worked
wonders, in others in did not work at all, the biggest take away | had from the overall
experience was the impact parents have on their kids whether it be positive or negative.

Intern Teacher's Descriptive Report (Continued)
Parent contact also took place at parent teacher interviews which was a nerve racking yet
beneficial experience. Being able to sit down face to face with parents and discuss their
child's performance in class was a really special experience.
My goals for this practicum were to grow in and improve the way | assessed students
during physical education, toimprove my classroom management strategies, and to initiate
parent contact. I had the opportunity to use the Chinook High School's daily assessment
rubric for my daily assessment. Using the language from the rubric | was able to create a
progression of assessment for each unit that gave students the opportunity to be
successful. | assessed safety and attitude on the first day, participation on the second day
and gameplay on the third day. I felt like | was able to take steps toward making
assessment for meaningful through this process. My last two goals were somewhat
connected, a new alternative | tried for classroom management was phoning home. It is
still an intimidating process for me but I have grown so much since the beginning of the
year by making at least one phone call per week.
The professional inquiry project | had for this semester was in partnership with another
PSII intern. I set out to answer the question: How can physical education teachers
authentically assess students ona daily basis? We decided the best way to answer this
question was to have students interpret the program of studies into understandable “I can”
statement. We took classes of grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 students and had them read the
original program of studies outcomes and then had them interpret what they understood
them to be. Once that process was completed my partner and I gave a final edit to all the
outcomes to make sure that the main ideas were still communicated. Next we put students
in front of a camera and had them recite the modified “I can’ statements. After we had all
the outcomes recorded, we organized them into files so that they can be used by the
physical education department in the future. I feel that we answered our question by
having students take ownership of what the learning outcomes meant by interpreting them
into their own words and by making the outcomes accessible on a daily basis through an
interactive medium.
In conclusion Chinook High School embraced me as an intern and gave me the opportunity
and environment to grow and learn as an educator. I have come so far in my knowledge and
ability as a teacher thanks to my PSIIl experience. | know welcome each opportunity to step
into a classroom or gymnasium and teach students. I still look forward to future growth and
this adventure | know that | am in the right profession.

Teacher Mentor Comments:
Michael Greeno was an intern teacher at Chinook High School during semester 1 of the
2015/2016 school year. His teaching assignment included 4 sections of PE/Health 9,
My first interactions with Michael were in June of 2015 when he came to Chinook to
introduce himself and gather details about his upcoming internship. Michael was polite and
eager to get started. He willingly gave extra time ta came back to the school later that week
and take part in developing the facility schedule for the upcoming semester. He actively
engaged in the planning and brought great insight and ideas to our discussions. He
gathered the necessary resources to ensure he would be well planned for the beginning of
the semester.
At the beginning of the first semester Michael seemed a little nervous in the classroom. It
was clear that he was comfortable with the curriculum, but had some questions regarding
pedagogy and classroom management strategies. We engaged in regular conversations
before and after his classes and his confidence quickly grew. He has grown into a caring
and confident teacher.
Michael shows great care for the students he teaches and takes time to develop
relationships with them, He ensures a safe and caring environment in his classroom where
all students have an opportunity to be successful. He takes the time to understand the
individual needs of the students in his classroom and differentiates his instruction to meet
those individual needs. He communicates well with parents/guardians and ensures that
parents are aware of the expectations he has of his students.
Michael has shown a clear understanding and ability for planning and preparation, His unit
and lesson plans have clear connections to specific outcomes within the curriculum and are
well structured. He consistently demonstrated his preparation and regularly revisited his
lesson pians, reflecting on the successes and failures of each class. He used this reflection to
modify future lessons.

throughout his internship. He actively engaged in a collaborative community centered on
developing ownership among the students in our school. He regularly attended both
collaborative community meetings (bi-weekly) and department meetings and actively
participated in these meetings. He took advantage of opportunities to attend classes
outside his teaching assignment and observe a variety of pedagogical approaches.

Faculty Mentor Comments:
In addition to those teaching responsibilities previously outlined in this report, Mr. Greeno
was required to engage in half time professional study and professional learning that
included collaborative inquiry, reflective practice, exploration of selected educational
issues, and portfolio development. Mike was an active participant in seminars that focused
‘on classroom management and leadership, parent conferencing and communication,
differentiated instructional strategies, professional relations, and employment issues.
Mr, Greeno was also required to complete an Inquiry into Teaching professional research
project that demonstrated his emerging skills as a teacher-researcher. This project
employed a micro-action research process in which Mike focused on specific KSAs in the
‘Teaching Quality Standard, He created an essential question, implemented selected
strategies, and gathered data to provide evidence of the extent to which his chosen
strategies were effective in enhancing student learning. A unique element of this inquiry
process involved Mike's use of a Teaching Learning Guide that is based on a collaborative
inquiry model of professional learning, as opposed to conventional TPGP goal setting. His
Inquiry into Teaching project focused on the question:
How can physical education teachers most effectively used daily authentic assessment to
determine student learning?
As a result of this project, Mike converted the physical education curriculum into student
accessible learning outcomes and introduced ‘] can’ statements as part of his regular class
introductions. He assumed responsibility for designing and implementing a variety of
formative and summative assessments of students, and was successful in coming to a
greater understanding of the role of each type in ascertaining student achievement of
specific and general outcomes.
Mr. Greeno explored and improved the effectiveness of his management strategies;
consequently, his classroom leadership and management skills grew enormously during
practicum. He established appropriate routines, and built a motivating and helpful rapport
with students to create a classroom with high expectations and supports for student
success.
Mike grew a great deal in his competency in planning and preparation, and became more
precise and organized in implementing lessons that were thought through in advance and
that were interesting, multi-strategic, and took into consideration a variety of learning
preferences and skill levels. In interviews with students, they told me that Mike always
gave them lots of help and feedback, and that they believed he wanted to support them in
improving their performance in physical education.
In all interactions with me, Mr, Greeno corresponded in a timely and consistently
professional manner, and was conscientious in meeting timelines for assignments and
other professional responsibilities. Importantly, he accepted feedback with a disposition of
learning and growth, and immediately implemented suggestions to improve his teaching,
Poge SofPSII Final Repot for Mike Green
Itis my opinion that Mr. Greeno’s aptitude and competencies for professional practice
meet the expectations outlined in the Teaching Quality Standards for the Province of
Alberta.
Ihave read the complete Final Report, including the sections authored by Vice-Principal
Tracy Wong, Teacher Mentor Jaime Bach, and Intern Teacher Mike Greeno, and certify that
the assigned grade for Professional Semester IIl is PASS,
