Writing in Education

Im considering becoming an elementary teacher, and as a teacher I would need to get

over my fear of writing, to be an effective teacher. Writing is the fundamental part of education,

and its critical for a teacher to be able to communicate well verbally and through the written

language with students, as well as parents and administrators.

From the first day of school, and possibly even before the school year begins a teacher

needs to be able to write letters and post information about whats happening and whats to be

expected in the classroom setting. Teachers need to be able to communicate with parents through

writing, regarding homework assignments and assignments that are coming up. They also need to

be able to communicate through writing with administration when there are problems that need

to be addressed in the classroom setting.

Teachers implement to students the fundamental skills of writing. They need to show

students that writing is important and how to do so efficiently and tactfully. They also need to

instill in students a passion for writing and doing so effectively and efficiently.

Its important for teachers to communicate effectively. Handouts a teacher needs to write

would include a summary of important points to be learned, as a guide for items to be learned in

class, or for references that need to be looked up. Because handouts are such an important way of

communicating with students, it must be done effectively. (Prozesky MBChB MCommH PhD)

Its not only students that a teacher needs to be able to communicate with, but also

parents. In Building Parent-Teacher Relationships it stresses the importance of positive parent-

school communication. If the only communication the school has with the parent is negative, the

parent will lose interest in the involvement they have with the students education process

(Building Parent-Teacher Relationships).

What can I do as a teacher to keep positive communication with parents? According to

How Strong Communication Contributes to Student and School Success: Parent and Family

Involvement; have direct two-way communication between schools, parents and the community.

The earlier a parent becomes involved, the more powerful the effect on student achievement.

Communicating from school to home about programs, progress, academic achievement including

notices, memos, phone calls, report cards, conferences, open houses, web sites, e-mail and voice

mail. Establishing strong communication between home and school will not only help build

strong relationships, but will contribute to a students academic achievement. (NSPRA)

For a teacher to be successful, its critical to have strong verbal and written

communication skills. Derrick Meador lists different articles where written and verbal

communication is essential in the classroom setting in Tips for Highly Successful Parent and

Teacher Communication. A student who knows that the teacher communicates on a regular basis

with their parents and who knows that their parent trust the teacher will likely put more effort in

school. Effective communication can be time consuming, but it is crucial. (Meador)

As a new teacher, its important to know the value of communication both verbal and

written. Yvonne Bender gives ideas to communicate effectively with not only parents, but also

colleagues and administrators in her book The Tactful Teacher: Effective Communication with

Parents, Colleagues, and Administrators. Not only will it be important to communicate with

parents and students, but a teacher needs to be able to communicate with administration and

colleagues, to let them know of problems or concerns, and be able to collaborate in the

classroom. (Bender)

In conclusion as a teacher communication is critical in the teaching profession. You need

to use rhetoric to get information to those its intended for in a professional manner. But also in a

way that is easy for the intended audience to understand in a way that is compassionate regarding

the students. Effective communication can be the means to make or break a teacher.
