SPM TRIAL EXAM 2007

ANSWER SCHEME

3 (a) The wall of the dam is thicker at the bottom of the dam. 1

(b) Water pressure increases with depth 1

(c) i) to investigate the relationship between the pressure in a 1

liquid and the depth.

ii) Variables
(a) Manipulated : Depth of liquid, y 1
(b) Responding : Pressure in liquid, h
(c) Fixed : Density, p 1

iii) List of apparatus and materials. Measuring cylinder, 1

thistle funnel, rubber tube, manometer, and retort stand.

iv) Arrangement of app.

v) i) The measuring cylinder is completely filled with water.

ii) The thistle funnel is connected to the manometer with a
rubber tube.
iii) The thistle funnel is lowered with the water to a depth y 1
= 10.0m
The manometer reading, h is measured. 1
iv) Step 3 is repeated with values of depth y = 20.0m, 30.0
cm, 40.0 cm and 50.0 cm. 1

Conclusion :

h (cm)

0 y (cm)

It is observed that the manometer heading, h increases as the

depth, y of the thistle funnel is increased.
The pressure in a liquid increases with depth
4 (a) The brightness of the light depends on the speed of rotation of 1
the wheel.
(b) The greater the velocity of the magnet in the coil wire, the 1
greater magnitude of the induced current.

(c) i) To identify the relationship between the velocity of the
magnet and the magnitude of the induced current. ( When the 1
height of the magnet higher, the velocity increases )

ii) Manipulated variable : The velocity of the magnet 1

Responding : The magnitude of the induced current
Constant variable : The number of turns of the coil 1

iii) Bar magnet, a coil of cooper wire, milammeter, meter ruler, 1

connecting wires

v) The apparatus is arranged as shown in (iv). The height of bar

magnet is adjusted at h = 20 cm. 1

The bar magnet is dropped into the coilo wire. Reading of
