Some Redox Reactions

In todays exercise we will carry out reactions to observe and note the colour
changes of some common laboratory oxidizing and reducing agents. Record what
you observe in an appropriate table and under the heading Tests, Observations,
Inferences complete your report.

Procedure:

1. Add no more than about 1cm3 of each of the following containing acidified: (a)
potassium manganate(VII) (b) potassium dichromate(VI) (c) iodine solution I 2(aq)
to separate test tubes then to each add very slowly aqueous sodium sulphite.

2. To no more than about 1 cm3 of potassium iodide in three separate test tubes
add acidified: (a) potassium manganate(VII) (b) potassium dichromate(VI) (c)
hydrogen peroxide

3. Add no more than about 1cm3 of each of the following containing acidified: (a)
potassium manganate(VII) (b) potassium dichromate(VI) in separate test tubes
then add to each tube slowly hydrogen peroxide

In the table below are the lists of oxidizing and reducing agents with the
observable changes which they produce

Oxidising Agent Colour Product Formed Colour

Potassium Very deep purple Manganese Colourless
manganate(VII) (II)Mn2+ actually so very
KMnO4 pale pink as to
appear colourless
Potassium Orange Chromium(III)Cr3 Green
+
dichromate(VI)K2Cr
2O7
Hydrogen Peroxide Colourless H2O Colourless
H2O2 No observable
change in this
product; but
reaction may
produce colour
change in the
substance with
which H2O2 it
reacted.
Aqueous iodine Red brown Iodide ion I- Colourless
I2(aq)
Reducing Agent
Sulphite ion SO32- Colourless Sulphate ion No observable
Sulphur dioxide SO42- change in this
SO2 reactant but may
produce colour
change in the
substance with
which it reacts.
Hydrogen Peroxide Colourless Oxygen O2 Bubbles of
oxygen MAY be
observed.
