9)TURNBUCKLE FRAME GALV, EYE&HOOK 12MMX200MM - 85 PCS

10)SEIZING WIRE GALVANIZED, 3MM DIA -20KG

Principle: The main aim of fitting the razor wire is just the appearance should serve
as a detterent and put the pirates in two minds about their modis operandi of
attack.

Construction of fencing around the vessel: The razor wire forms two layers of
protection. The lower one at deck level outboard of the railings and the second layer
above and a little outboard of the lower layer. Care to be taken that the 2 layers
have a minimum overlap

Method of installation:
a/ The 8 mm galvanized wire plays a key role as it serves as a weight bearing
member wherein it bears the weight of the razor wire and also serves as a strong
support to prevent the ensemble from being torn down in the event the pirates try
to pull down the razor wire using meat hooks thrown up at the end of a rope.
b/ The angle bars are made into an F with each leg of the F serving as an anchor
point for the 8 mm wire as well as the ends of the razor wire. Please see attached
drawing for dimensions of the F construction. The lower leg of the F is about the
height of the top railing and the F should rest on the deck plating so no additional
weight is put in the u-clamps which hold the F against the railings.
c/ The razor wire we get in Singapore comes to about 15 metres long which is the
distance between 2 Fs
d/ The 8 mm wire is run along the axis of the razor wire(which is double-helix in
construction). Which means it runs inside the razor wire circumference.
e/ The ends of the razor wire are bent back and secured using 2 bulldog grips at
each end. The ends are bent around the thimbles provided so as to avoid the wire
chafing against other fastening members.
f/ One end of the razor wire is fastened to one F by a shackle and the other end is
fastened using a shackle which in turn is connected to a bottle screw. This bottle
screw(turnbuckle) has an eye at one end(this end is connected to the shackle going
on the 8 mm wire) and a hook at the other. The hook serves as a quick release
device in the event we have to remove/ slip the razor wire in an emergency.
g/ Both layers of razor have their fastening and hanging arrangements in identical/
similar manner
h/ When the razor wire is installed, entire perimeter upto the bulwark on focsle deck is
covered. It is only when retracted that the manifolds/ mooring chocks and lifeboats and
liferafts are left uncovered for emergency/ operations
h/ In the photos shown, it can be seen that no more than 2 persons are rqd for any
stretch of razor wire to retract it in preparation for port call. It can be a single man
operation too when the crew get more skilled at this process.
i/ When preparing for high risk are transit, sack hooks(made on board) can be used
to drag / open out the razor wire again. This way the crew does not have to touch
the razor wire as such thereby ensuring lesser chances of injury.
