Kids:
Sugary drinks
#milkdrunk #rethinkyourdrink
What hydrates you?
1. What beverages do you usually drink?
2. Why do you drink that beverage?

We will throw a ball around and ask each student what they typically drink to try and
get an idea of what beverages they are drinking and why.
This can get them to start thinking about what they are drinking and their personal
choices. We also will get a good idea of how much they know about hydration and
sugary drinks.

Learning objectives
1. Identify the importance of maintaining proper hydration

2. Identify parts of the label that indicate its a sugary

drink

3. Differentiate kinds of drinks and when it is most

appropriate to drink them
Time for a science experiment...

We will introduce our science experiment where we are going to cook down some
sports drink to demonstrate how much sugar is in it.
We will first ask the students what do they think it going to happen when we cook the
water out.

Does caffeine dehydrate you?

Individuals who habitually consume caffeine-containing drinks can be reassured that
intakes of less than 300 mg day)1 caffeine will not compromise hydration status.
Large doses act as acute diuretic >250mg
Single common low dose have little to no diuretic effect
Regular users become habituated to effects of caffeine, diminishing its action.

Total body water and its compartments are not affected by ingesting a moderate dose
of caffeine in healthy young adult males.--> In conclusion, regardless of body
composition, daily water in- gestion, and habitual PA, a moderate dose of caffeine
ingestion does not affect TBW and fluid distribution, over a short-term pe- riod, in
healthy young men who are not regular caffeine users.

With acknowledgement of the study's limitations, results suggest that coffee did not result in
dehydration when provided in a moderate dose of 4 mg/kg BW caffeine in four cups per day.
Thus, these data suggest that coffee, when consumed in moderation by caffeine habituated
males contributes to daily fluid requirement and does not pose a detrimental effect to fluid
balance.
