What needs to be taught in schools that currently are not being taught.

C students study what A students do not study

This is rather an unusual way of opening an essay of this sort; however I may be
justified because this topic is pleasantly unusual. The opening sentence was from Robert
Kiyosaki, a lot of folks may know him (he is not as famed as star wars though). If I
remember well, he was talking about Rich Dad and the Rich Dads neighbor, who we later
found out to be the Poor Dad. Sad!
If this has crossed your mind that there are certain skills which need to be taught in
school that are actually not being taught, you can be sure you are not alone. In the
following paragraphs, I will essay to put a little list of what I (and a lot of people ) think
should become part of our learning curriculum.
It will not be true to assume that we have an innate ability to communicate . There
should not be a branch of learning only which a handful of students take. The art and
ability to communicate should be known to and exercised by all and sundry. Good
conversation will be a more direct application of this skill if acquired. Humans have found
great companionship in the media and internet, replacing the need for good
communication to a smaller or larger extent amongst individuals. How much of negative
feelings would have been communicated, how much injury would have been avoided ,
how many relationships would have been saved, how many suicidal feelings and hate
would have been communicated where remedy could have been foundthe list goes on
and on if people learnt how communicate; to set the right atmosphere to talk with one
another.
There is an unanimous consent that financial wisdom and the skill to manage
money should be incorporated into our school system. It is no longer the case of Robert
Kiyosakis Rich Dad and Poor Dad, but a somewhat universal feeling that this would be a
step in a good direction. The idea that money is first a conceptual thing; the understanding
that money is first abstract and then concrete justifies this need the more. In that light , the
subject of money handling and financial discipline should attract due attention like the
sciences and all other noble subjects. Students should have good understanding of the
trappings of cash management because education costs money, and healthy principles in
dealing with money will never harm now or anytime in the future. This also prepares the
students for the life after not only for managing their own money but also that belonging to
other people.
Admittedly, educational systems all over have failed to some degree In their ability
to create entrepreneurs. The norm has been to graduate a horde of students who have
their eyes cast on the horizon for the big paying jobs. The number of graduates grow
exponentially while the jobs remain almost in decline and or largely outnumbered. Special
training structures, the Business schools have metamorphosed over the years and , have
become grounds for advanced education for those who want to develop the
entrepreneurial spirit. So you may begin to wonder : between acquainting the individual
with knowledge and establishing self reliance, which should be the broader aim of
education? I am of the opinion that critical principles taught in the business schools
should make up part of the curriculum in our schools. Can there be a huge justification in
spending long years in colleges and universities to graduate and discover that one needs to
enroll into another institute of learning to spend additional years in learning the principles
of good money management, investment and or entrepreneurship. I believe we will be
doing great good to the large body of students if we can also cater for that need; by and
large, a number of individuals would have great need of business education. Acquisition of
knowledge should become good bed fellow to self reliance, originality, and the ability to
become a self starter. This becomes even more interesting if we look at the massive
amount of students who seek federal loans. It is so easy to see how much loans are
forgiven, which arises when individuals were unable to payback possibly arising from lack
of financial education and how to efficiently manage and pay back loans. I strongly believe
this is an area that should be taught in schools.

Time is everything, you may often hear people say. And there is this school of
thought that believes that time itself is money. Whichever among this we may choose to
believe, there is no denying the fact that time management is critical and constitutes what
makes the huge difference between two seemingly equal situations. Whatever we may
achieve in life will lie on the greater part, how much time we devote to it. The more of that
time we can create, the more we may be able to achieve. None of us can ask for more
time ;Providence has given an equal measure of time for each day. No more, no less. We
cannot get more but can only learn how to manage time efficiently; to make the best use of
it. Some may have by repetition or by habitual attendance to a particular task learnt the
critical skill of efficient time management. But for the remainder of us, it is a skill that we
may have to learn; giving much thought to as much as we do other to noble disciplines.
However, this is an important life skill that people rarely get the opportunity to learn
without making conscious efforts towards it. If you love life, do not waste time for time is
what life is made up of is a word from Bruce Lee.
Drug abuse is a social epidemic. Every message around us condemns it and
seriously warns of the dangers thereof. I like to think that drug abuse is a manifestation of
something much more deeper, something that is a representative of the individual. This is
the individuals mental health. It is a fact that there is mass education on drug abuse, but
we need to look at the root cause ;we need to take an aim at the genesis and not the
manifestation. If an individual possesses a healthy mind and psyche, the less probable it is
that such an individual may resort to the use of drugs to bolster self confidence or for other
personal gratifications.
Self defence I believe should be taught in schools. The preservation of life and
ability of prevent injury to self arising from the activities of others and or unforeseen
dangerous situations is of utmost importance. It cannot be argued that several individuals
have suffered from harm and injuries which an act of self defense should have averted.
Such an individual would be unable to act if there had not been any education on what
best to do in such situations. What readily comes to aid is the rush of adrenaline, the
individual is overwhelmed with a powerful fight or flight emotion. This is of little help
without adequate information on the best course of thoughts and actions. Wrong course of
actions in the face of danger is as dangerous as the situation; this cannot be over-
emphasized. Between the sexes, the female is considered more prone to injuries from
attacks , at least from the standpoint of biological interpretation. The perpetrator always
than not is a male. I have really thought of how many rape attempts would have been
unsuccessful if the female had been drilled on how to defend herself against being raped in
situations where that was possibility. At least, several people have demonstrated time and
time again that if the right physical maneuvers are employed during an attempt to rape, the
female has a lot of chances of holding the attempt at bay. The justification here is that
several women and girls would have been spared of the ugly experience and the aftermath
which is psychologically crushing and mentally delibitating. Have you thought about this
yet?
One can go on and on and come up with a pretty long list of things that should be
taught in schools that are currently not been taught. There will always be things that the
individual will need to learn by self, but a whole bunch of things should become part of the
life of an individual upon graduating from an institution of higher learning. This sometimes
is what may make a difference, for the little things do make a huge difference every now
and then
