1.0 Specification

1.1Materials Preparation
1. Saw the wood plate into pieces: (body) one 400mm x 100mm, (cradle ends) two 80mm x
80mm, (cradle sides) two 200mm x 80mm, (supports) two 10mm x 114mm
2. Saw the pool noodle into pieces: (wheels) four 25mm thick, (bumper) one 100mm thick
3. Saw the metal rods into the axles: two 160mm long rods

1.2 Body Construction

1. Take the sides and ends of the cradle, see Figure 6 for guidance. Using glue connect the
two sides to the ends, with the inside of the sides meeting the outside edge of the ends
2. Once the glue has dried enough to hold the shape together, place it on the underside of
the body (the side where the axles and wheels will go) with one edge flush against the end
of the body, and trace the cradle onto the body with pencil

3. Mark places 15mm in from each side of the body at either end of the traced area. This
should create four markings in total and should line up with the solid part of the end pieces
of the cradle (positions are shown in Figure 2)
4. Rest the axles against the wooden body, 45mm from each end.
5. Place two wire eye straps over each axle, with the outside edge flush with the outside
edge of the body (Figure 2)
6. Hold the wire eye straps in place and put one screw through each hole, tighten until there
is no movement
7. Mark the centre of all four wheels, which have a 45mm radius, and drill a 6mm hole in the
center. This is smaller than the axle to ensure a tight fit once joined

8. Apply glue to the inside hole of the wheel, quickly slide the wheel onto the axle until the
end of the axle is in the same plane as the outside of the wheel, scrape away whatever glue
is pushed out of the hole
9. Repeat step 6 until all wheels four wheels are on separate ends of the axles (axles should
be inside the wire eye straps for this time as once the glue is dried, it not a reversible
process)

8
10. Mark the 100mm bumper with a line from
the circumference to 9mm towards the center
and another leading perpendicularly
from the inside of that line to the circumference
(as indicated here). Make these markings on
both ends of the bumper

11. Connect the points on the circumference to the correlating points on the other side,
creating a straight line across the bottom and side of the bumper (as indicated here)

12. Use the stanley knife to remove the section enclosed by the lines. If done correctly, this
will create a missing section from the bumper that will fit over the main body of the rover
(Figure 5)
13. Apply glue to the inside of the missing section and press against the front of the rover,
make sure it is facing upwards and not on the same side as the axles. Wait for the glue to
dry
14. Place the completed cradle onto the top (the opposite side to the axles). Hold in place
and screw through markings on the bottom of the body. This will hold the cradle in place
15. Mark both supports with a 45 degree slope from the corner to the opposing sides as
shown here

16. Create the same marking at the other end of the supports

9
17. Saw along the marking to create two trapeziums (Figure 6)
18. Apply glue to the sloped sides of a trapeziums and place with one side against the cradle
and one side against the body
19. Once the glue has dried the rover will be complete

2.0 Dimensions Summary

The drawing package should be referred to as the definitive authority on all dimensions. A

3.0 Risk Management Plan

3.1 Risk Management Introduction

The risk management tables below clearly explain the possible hazards that exist while in the design
phase of this project. These hazards can lead to risks that the designer must deal with. Included are
possible mitigations to the risk as well as likelihood and severity. There is still a residual risk after
said mitigations, which have been included as well.

4.0 Tender Evaluation

4.1 Introduction
This document contains the criteria that will be used to evaluate potential companies to build the
Mars lander. The winning tenderer for the manufacture will be the group the most successfully
satisfies the criteria that is shown below.

4.2 Criteria summary

Criteria Title Criteria Details

Professionalism . Attending meetings on time.

. Business Language.
. Team co-operation.

Time management . Deadline is very important to our project.

Communication . Communicating through Emails or Text messages.
Capability . Sufficient staff to handle the project.
. Appropriate equipment to be ready suitable for the construction of the car.

Understanding of design . Important that the contractors be able to understand the design.

4.3 Criteria Explained

4.3.1 Professionalism.
Here at Ares rover design we value professionalism and display professional behaviour at all
times. the team we will be working with must a high level of professionalism.

4.3.2 Time management.

Deadlines are important to our project. Here at Ares rover design it is important that
company will build the vehicle quickly so that the construction deadline can be met. that's
why time management is very important in this criteria the teams will be decided based on
the score whether they can complete the vehicle early.

The tenderer must be able to show they have sufficient, suitably staff to construct the car.
The tenderer also must have appropriate equipment to Cut the wood plate, the pool noodle
and the metal rod As shown above in the specification and construction.

4.5 Understanding of design.

It is important that the chosen company be able to understand the design so that the
vehicle can be constructed correctly. we believe that our design can be improved by
inspecting it while constructing the vehicle. points will be awarded as follows.

As the table shows that Week 5, Week 11 and Week 12 would be busy weeks for contractors and
designers. Contractors and designers can use Week 7 and Week 9 to do some preparation for the
following weeks. Academic communication and Engineering foundations - Principles &
Communication have presentations at the same week which is Week 12. Would be a better choice to
prepare at Week 11.
