Question 4
Read the text below.

One hot afternoon, Adam and Steven were on their way home after doing their project work in
a friend's house. As it was very hot, they decided to take a short cut behind some abandoned shop
houses. The back lane was much cooler as there were huge old trees along the road.

As they were walking, they saw a thin scruffy-looking man walking behind them. A little ahead
of them on the right was an old lady. The boys kept on walking, then turned into a narrow lane on the
left that led to their home. While they were busy talking about the project they suddenly heard a
scream.

The boys turned and saw the old lady sprawled on the road . They rushed to her. She was in
pain as she had twisted her leg and bruised her knees. Her face was tear-stricken and she looked
terrified. Pointing at the scruffy-looking man they had seen earlier, the woman cried out that he had
snatched her bag.

Without wasting much time, the boys pursued the man. As they were sprinters, they soon
caught up with him. Steven pinned him on the road while Adam dashed off to the main road to
call for help. A police car patrolling the area saw Adam and followed him to where Steven was.
The police returned the bag to the old lady and the boys followed the police to the police station
to have their statement recorded. The police praised the boys for their courage

Question 5
Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer question (a)- (d).

The River's a wanderer,

A nomad, a tramp,
He doesn't choose one place
To set up his camp.

The River's a winder,

Through valley and hill
He twists and he turns,
He just cannot be still.

The River's a hoarder,

And he buries down deep
Those little treasures
That he wants to keep
The River's a baby,
He gurgles and hums,
And sounds like he's happily
Sucking his thumbs.

The River's a singer,

As he dances along,
The countryside echoes
The notes of his song.

The River's a monster

Hungry and vexed,
He's gobbled up trees
and he'll swallow you next.

Valerie Bloom
