I rejoice that the heavens are open and that the long night of darkness is over. Truth is
restored once more in the same way that it has always been given to men on earththrough
living apostles and prophets. This coming weekend, we will once again have the privilege of
listening to living apostles and prophets as well as other inspired General Authorities. The
revelations, impressions, thoughts, and ideas that came to their minds as they prepared their
General Conference talks came from our Heavenly Father through the power of the Holy
Ghost. They are for OUR time, meeting OUR needs, helping us know how to conduct OUR lives
during these times. This is the scripture for OUR generation on the earth. We would be wise to
listen carefully, pay heed, and study thoroughly the words which we will hear over the 2 days
of General Conference. President Eyring has stated, We also arm ourselves with
righteousness and power as we treasure up in our minds continually the words of life (D&C
84:85) We treasure up those words by immersing ourselves in the holy scriptures and in the
words of the Lords chosen servants, who will share His will, mind, and voice (D&C 68:4) during
the (upcoming) General Conference.
Obviously, the full impact of these inspired addresses cant be comprehended in a single
casual listening. These talks should be studied thoroughly, pondered, prayed about and
discussed. You would be wise to take notes of the talk when it is presented, read it again and
take notes again and then write down any thoughts or strong impressions that you have as
you read it. Clearly, the best way to get revelation is to read revelation. Look up any
scriptures presented and cross reference them. Discuss them in piso in the evening or during
companionship study. Your companion will have insights and impressions that you didnt have. The
Lord gives us a gentle reminder of the source of the words spoken by His servants in General
Conference in D&C 1:38 which reads, and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my
word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my
servants, it is the same. In other words, what is spoken in General Conference by inspired apostles
and prophets of God is as if the Lord himself were saying those things. Again, in D&C 18:34-35, the
Savior confirms that, These words are not of men nor of man, but of me..For it is my voice which
speaketh them unto your; for they are given by my Spirit unto you and by my power. Finally,
referring to the Prophet Joseph Smith (and all true prophets) D&C 21:5 says, For his word ye shall
receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.
I am deeply grateful for ongoing revelation and the knowledge that knowing Godly truths is not a
guessing game when there is a living prophet on the earth. We are the most blessed people on the
face of the earth because of the clarity and sure manner in which we can understand Gods will for
us in these latter days. This is Christs Church, he directs its affairs from on high through His chosen
representatives. That sure knowledge gives me tremendous hope and peace. More than ever, as
the hymn says, we should, Come listen to a prophets voice and hear the words of God. May we
be wise enough to do so is my prayer.
Honor is respecting others because of their worth as human beings. It is showing consideration to
others and treating them with dignity, courtesy, and kindness. It is also respecting others because
of the higher authority they represent.
As I studied honor this week in the scriptures, I could clearly see how important it is that we honor
God, honor our parents, honor church leaders, honor those we associate with and that we also
honor ourselves. In 1 Peter 2:17 we read, "Honor all men. Love the brotherhood, Fear God." All
throughout the scriptures we are admonished to "fear God"--which means to respect God. We do
this by serving him faithfully and by keeping his commandments. We honor Him by being exactly
obedient to all he asks, by accepting callings to build His kingdom and by keeping the covenants
we make with Him each Sunday as we partake of the sacrament. We also honor God by keeping
our temple covenants.
In the Ten Commandments we read, "Honor thy father and thy mother" In 1 Nephi 17:55 Nephi
expresses these thoughts when Laman and Lemuel were about to honor him, he says"...they fell
down before me and were about to worship me, but I would not suffer them, saying I am thy
younger brother, yea, even thy younger brother; wherefore, worship the Lord thy God, and honor
thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God shall
give thee." As a young girl I often thought about my parents as I made decisions, asking myself if
they would be pleased with the decision I was just about to make. I always wanted to honor our
family name and do what I could to bring honor to my parents. A good way to honor your parents
is to remember their birthdays, their anniversary, Mother's Day and Father's Day. I know the most
meaningful gifts my children gave me were thoughtful letters written where they expressed
gratitude for what I taught them and did for them. As missionaries we have the opportunity each
week to send emails to our parents. This is the perfect time to share our feelings of gratitude for the
way our parents have blessed our life.
The scriptures make it very clear that we should honor our leaders, even if our leaders have flaws.
In Hebrews 13:17 we read, "Obey them that rule over you, and submit yourselves: for
they watch for your souls, as they that must give an account, that they may do it with joy and not with
grief for that is unprofitable for you." We can honor our church leaders in many ways. We can accept
callings and assignments humbly and then do all we can to fulfill our assignments with a good attitude.
We can learn from our leaders and humbly accept suggestions and receive correction. It has been said
that when we honor a leader we actually honor ourselves, because the leader represents us. As
missionaries we can honor the General Authorities and the counsel we receive in Preach My Gospel.
With General Conference this weekend, we can listen intently and then do what we are asked to do to
be good members of the church. We can honor President Dayton by following his guidance, our Stake
Presidents and bishops when they admonish us to do something, our Zone Leaders and District Leaders
as they make suggestions on ways we can further missionary work. We can show esteem to our leaders
by asking for their advice and asking for direction when things are not clear. Most importantly, we honor
our leaders when we speak positively about them and look for the good in them.
In the scriptures we learn the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." There
are many ways we can honor others and treat them as we would want to be treated. We can always
remember that each person is a son/daughter of God and we can treat them with respect. It is
important that as missionaries we not let difference in age, gender, race or opinion keep us from seeing
the value of others. We can care for others by listening intently and genuinely asking if there is anything
we can do to help them. We can be honest and apologize if we do something wrong and we can
always be reliable and be our word. If we make an agreement with an investigator, member,
companion, ward member or anyone, we should remember that our word is our bond. Being your word
is so important in building trusting relationships. We can also be positive and look for the good in others
and speaking it to them. Being polite is one of the best things we can do to honor another person. We
can open the door for others, stand when someone enters the room, offer your chair or seat on a metro
or train to someone who needs it, and use respectful, dignified and refined language. We can greet
people by standing tall, making eye contact, addressing them with correct titles and introducing
people to each other. Proper table manners is another way we can honor others. Buddha is known for
saying, "You should respect each other and refrain from disputes: you should not, like water and oil,
repel each other, like milk and water, mingle together."
Showing respect and honor to oneself is one of the most important things we can do in life. When we
respect ourselves, it is easy for us to respect others. In the scriptures we are told to "love thy neighbor as
thyself." We can look for the good in ourselves and express gratitude to Heavenly father for all we are
because of Him. We can repent and forgive ourselves when we fall short. We can eat healthy, exercise
vigorously and honor our bodies as temples of God. We can view good and positive media and read
uplifting material. We can be virtuous in every way and strive to become all our Heavenly Father desires
us to become.
President and I feel very honored for the opportunity we have to serve with you. You are the finest young
maen and women of the church. We speak daily of our gratitude to our Heavenly Father for your
goodness, for your diligence and hard work in bringing others to Christ. Thank you for ALL you do to
Honor your Heavenly Father and the Savior by being faithful and valiant missionaries.

Doctrine and Covenants 1:38 says What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse
not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away,
but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is
the same.
When God speaks we listen, but it is hard to listen unless we know He is talking to us; and so it is
our job to make sure that everyone knows that our Heavenly Father will be addressing us this
coming week. To prepare them and ourselves, here are some things to keep in mind.
Pass-along cards. Remember the template we sent to you? Today or tomorrow every
companionship should have those cards printed and ready to hand out. Invite everyone you
know! (and everyone you dont know, too!)
Questions. Its a great idea to arrive to general conference prepared with a few questions
that you need answered and an even better idea to make sure that members, less-actives,
and all friends you are teaching do the same! Invite all of your friends to come to conference
prepared with a few questions in mind.
Food. We think that King Benjamin said it best when he taught in Mosiah 2:9 My brethren, all
ye that have assembled yourselves together, you that can hear my words which I shall speak
unto you this day; for I have not commanded you to come up hither to trifle with the words
which I shall speak, but that you should hearken unto me, and open your ears that ye may
hear, and your hearts that ye may understand, and your minds that the mysteries of God may
be unfolded to your view. We dont think that the Nephites were having a picnic while King
Benjamin spoke, and we should follow their example. With our Heavenly Father speaking to
us, we should not bring bags of candy, large soda pops, bags of chips, and, yes, even the
mate should be left in piso. Giving all the attention to the Lord will allow not only us but also
those that are watching conference with us to feel the spirit more as we are an example
unto the believers. If we do this, we can say even as the Nephites said, And it is the faith
which we have had on the things which our king has spoken unto us that has brought us to this
great knowledge, whereby we do rejoice with such exceedingly great joy. (Mosiah 5:4)
We are excited for the opportunity that we will have to hear the words of living prophets and
apostles. We know that our hearts as well as the hearts of our friends we are teaching will be
touched and filled by the messages we receive this weekend.
