The Destruction of Modern Enslavement

When President Lincoln introduced the Emancipation Proclamation, many people

thought the ownership of human beings would forever be a thing of the past in the United States,

but the slavery of humans continues to be a problem in our society today. Millions of dollars are

spent each year to fight thousands of human traffickers, or people who kidnap, buy, and sell

human beings on the black market. Matthew Continenttis Human Trafficking: Do US sanctions

effectively combat human trafficking? shows the horrors of human trafficking and how US

support in other countries can make a difference. Also, Kyle Schroeders PSA Modern Day

Slavery also uses rhetorical appeals in a more effective way by connecting to a specific

audience and using images to promote the fight against human trafficking. Their uses of logical,

emotional, and ethical appeals help show how United States support can help end this worldwide

problem.

Logical appeals are also frequently used in to support the authors claim. These

incorporation of facts are used as evidence for arguments in a piece of work.

While arguing for the funding of money by the United States to other countries to help prevent

human trafficking, Continentti, author of Human Trafficking stated In 2002, the US

contributed a total of more than $55 million to some 200 anti-trafficking programs in 75

countries (Continentti, p.23). He As he continued, he made another claim that There have

been 8,000 human trafficking prosecutions worldwide, with nearly 3,000 convictions
(Continentti, p.34). Continentti is using this evidence to show the small amount of human

trafficking prosecutions worldwide. He stated The US spends more that 1 billion annually on

fighting drug trafficking, compared with $60 million to combat human trafficking (Continentti,

p.41). He is using this evidence to make the claim that the United States is not spending enough

money on human trafficking compared to drug trafficking. The incorporation of facts into this

piece helped the author support his claim that funding to fight human trafficking in other

countries should increase.

Emotional appeals were important to this piece because of the nature of human

trafficking. Right at the beginning of the article Human Trafficking Continentti refers to

human trafficking as A new form of slavery (Continentti, p.1). He does this to show the

darkness of human trafficking by referring to it as slavery, which is notorious for being evil. As

Continetti continues, He referred to child prostitution as Sex Tourism (Continentti, p.20). This

wording is meant to show the disgusting nature of human trafficking. While closing up his work,

Continetti gave some final comments about human trafficking and referred to it as appalling

assault on the dignity of men women and children (Continentti, p.34). This ending is effective

because it concludes the paper with an emotional phrase that will stay in the minds of readers.

An important part in evaluating an article is examining the credentials of the writer and

others in the work. The article Human Trafficking uses the testimonies of many knowledgeable

and respectable officials in the United States government to show its credentials are high.

Continentti begins showing his reliable sources early on while referencing the State Department,

According to the State Department (Continentti, p.4). As Continentti continues, he

specifically references Secretary of State Collin Powell when asked about how the United States

was doing battling human trafficking. He exclaimed Some, such as Secretary of State Powell,
see a long, drawn-out battle ahead, but they also see hope (Continentti, p.40). Lastly,

Continentti shows his extensive research on the topic of human trafficking while referencing the

critique of the United States anti-trafficking measures. While discussing these measures, he

stated Critics disagree over the specific impact of sanctions. Some say that sanctions will have

no impact while others contend that they will actually do harm (Continentti, p.31).

The rhetorical appeal pathos is also used in Kyle Schroeders PSA Modern Day

Slavery. First, he uses a picture of a young girl who appears physically harmed and is holding a

teddy bear to show the horrors that human trafficking can cause. Her bruises and somber look

help relate to the intended audience of parents. This damaged child helps parents become

involved in the picture, because they could see the battered child as their own child. Also, the use

of the phrase Modern Day Slavery in the PSA is an emotional phrase that helps connect to the

emotions of the audience. The word slavery has been associated with evil and tragedies for

centuries. Referring to human trafficking as the modern version can connect to the emotions of

many and want to help make a change. This is a more effective way of using emotional appeals

compared to Continettis piece because the audience can relate more to it through stronger

emotional connections due to images.

Another appeal used in Schroeders piece is the use of ethos. The incorporation of non-

profit groups helps bolster the credibility of the public service announcement. These groups have

been around for years and have thousands of donations placed each year into their support

groups. Schroeder adding these groups onto his PSA helps show his argument and add credible

organizations to his work. HTAP and UAHT adding their logo onto Schroeders Modern Day

Slavery shows that these large non-profits have the same viewpoint on human trafficking as

Schroeder.
Through the uses of these appeals both authors try to spread awareness and fight against

human trafficking through emotional, logical and ethical appeals. Schroeders use of strong

emotional appeals to a specific audience of parents helps him create a stronger argument

compared to Continenttis broader audience. Also Schroeders use of visual images leaves a

stronger image in the minds of readers. One weakness in Schroeders work is his lack of logical

appeals. The use of these appeals can help argue for more United States funding while

connecting with people worldwide to join the fight against one of the most horrifying problems

in the modern generation.
