It was Kelvin Edwards dying
wish to donate his autobiography
to the Bacchus Marsh and District
Historical Society.
Close to one year on from his
death, the 550-page book docu-
menting his life has been printed
and Mr Edwards wish granted.
Born in Bacchus Marsh in 1929, Mr
Edwards described the 18-years
he spent in the town in great de-
tail. His wife Jean, son John and
daughter-in-law Clare, donated the
spiral bound book to the Historical
Society last month.
Clare said Mr Edwards, who suf-
fered from motor-neuron disease,
began putting together the auto-
biography in the last three to four
years of his life.
He had a real love for Bacchus
Marsh, he used to talk about it all
the time and it was very important
for him to recapture his childhood
and give something to the town for
future generations, she said.
Kelvin did a lot of research at
the Archive Centre in North Mel-
bourne and the State Library, and
he called upon certain people in
Bacchus Marsh to help him get all
of the dates and details right. He
was a very academic man; he got a
PHD in education at the age of 80.
The autobiography includes rec-
ollections of the Main Street of
Bacchus Marsh, the local Primary
School and the township during
the Second World War.
It also refers to Kelvins life out-
side of Bacchus Marsh as he ac-
counted for nearly every week of
his life, Clare said.
The early years were the most
idyllic though, and he describes his
life in Bacchus Marsh very fondly
and with great detail.
Prior to his death, Kelvin was
admitted to hospital with just one
chapter of his autobiography left to
write. At the time, his debilitating
illness had taken away his ability
to move and speak.
Kelvin was very sick and Jean
and I knew we had to get this last
remaining chapter finished, Clare
said.
Jean said to me, Im not a writer,
but Im happy to tell you the years
following 1985, so we sat down to-
gether and belted out a few pages.
Upon completion, we read the
final chapter to Kelvin.
He was at that last stage of his ill-
ness where he was so sick that he
was barely able to move, but after
listening to the final chapter, he
tapped his two pointer fingers to-
gether as a sign of clapping and
he looked at this alphabet board,
where he would point towards
certain letters in order to make a
word, and after about five min-
utes he spelt out the words, Well
Done.
Clare said she was pleased to have
seen the completion of her father-
in-laws autobiography, which was
very well received by the Bac-
chus Marsh and District Historical
Society.
There were about half a dozen
people sitting in the society office
and we spent about 40-minutes, if
not an hour, sitting with them and
looking through the pages.
There were names that were
obscure to me, but they meant
something to the people sitting
in that room. I found pages that I
thought might be relevant and par-
ticular names were pointed out as
someones great aunt or their great
aunts best friend. Everyone was
interested or attached in their own
personal way.
Mr Edwards passed away on
April 29, 2016, aged 87. His ashes
were interred at the Maddingley
Cemetery on Saturday, April 29
one year on from his death.

Victorious in Maternity upgrade

Shes only 13-years-old, but
Zali Ward is already taking
the hockey field by storm.

was selected in the Hockey
Victoria Under 15 Girls team
after strong performances
in local and representative
hockey, and impressive test-
ing results at the 2016/17
Victorian Hockey Academy
program.
Zali overcame a heavy
burden of travel and in-
jury to help bring home
a gold medal at the 2017
Under 15 National Hockey
Championships.
Between April 4 and 12,
Zalis team was undefeated
across seven matches, de-
feating New South Wales in
the semi-final and reigning
over the championship fa-
vourite Queensland team in
the grand final. The champi-
onship success was the first
time in 20-years that Victo-
rias Under 15 girls team had
won a national title.
Zali said she was really
happy to have been part of
such a significant victory.

Its obviously great to have
won but it was also a great
experience as I made a lot of
friendships with all the girls
in the team and I was able to
learn a lot of new skills.
The Under 15 team was
coached by hockey legend
David Wansbrough, who
has represented Australia in
over 200 games, including
two Olympic games.
Zali played in all seven
games in the mid-field and
showed impressive speed,
hard running and stick
skills.
She was one of the youngest
players at the event and is
young enough to be eligible
to play in the same age group
in the 2018 championships.
Zali has won best and fair-
est awards in her first three
seasons of junior mixed
grade hockey and in 2016,
was awarded Melton Hock-
ey Clubs most outstanding
junior prospect after mak-
ing her senior debut at just
12-years-of-age.
I just love how team orien-
tated it is, she said.
My mum played for a
small country team and one
day I tried out in the Under
10s and I really loved it, so
have just kept playing ever
since.
Zali has now been recruited
to join the Essendon Hockey
Club to play in Victorias
highest level female league,
the Womens Premier
League, in 2017 and beyond.
She played her maiden
game on Anzac Day and
is believed to be one of the
youngest players to compete
at this level.
A $2.5-million refurbishment of the Bacchus Marsh Hospital
has officially commenced.
The extensive project, which started on Monday (April 17),
will boost the number of post-delivery beds in the maternity
unit from 11 to 15, and will prepare the health service to cater
for up to 1,200 births per annum.
The refurbishment will also include the upgrading of
existing nurse workstations and delivery suites, as well as
the addition of a new, three-bay nursery to the maternity
department.
The project is part of a $10.6 million capital investment
program announced by Minister for Health Jill Hennessy in
late 2016.
Djerriwarrh Health Service Administrator, Dr John Ballard
said the commencement of the project was another important
milestone in the continued transformation of DjHS, as it
adapts to better meet the needs of its rapidly growing and
diversifying community.
At Djerriwarrh, we are continuing to get on with the
job of compassionately and professionally caring for the
community we serve, he said.
The upgrade of the maternity department is another vote
of confidence in DjHS and its future. It will better equip and
support the hospital to meet the immediate and future care
needs of the Bacchus Marsh and Melton communities.
DjHS Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Freeman warmly
welcomed the commencement of construction work on-
site and said the roll out of capital investment in DjHS
was fundamental to its continued transformation and
revitalisation.
The capital investment by the State Government combined
with a generous donation from the Ladies Auxiliary will
allow us to significantly upgrade and expand our level of
patient care and to better serve our local communities.
The refurbishment will occur in two stages and completion
is expected to be by March 2018.
Initial construction works on-site will see the erection
of boarding at the front entrance of the Hospital and the
establishment of a new temporary entrance to the maternity
department. Patient and visitor access to the front entrance of
the hospital will be unchanged and the maternity department
will remain fully operational throughout the upgrade works.

Hero duo bros

Two young brothers have

been hailed heroes after they
alerted authorities to a fire at
the Ballan Primary School
gymnasium.
Banjo and Clancy Luke
were at their Ballan resi-
dence on Monday (April 3)
when the base of the school
building was set alight.
Banjo, 5, said he was play-
ing in his cubby house when
he smelt fire.
I could see smoke too, so
I went inside and I told Dad
and he rang the police.
Clancy, 9, said he followed
his dad, Marty, outside to
investigate.
Dad got a bucket of water
and he put it on the burning
fire. Then the police and the
fire brigade came and we
told them that someone had
lit the fire.
Banjo was the real hero
because he smelt the smoke
but I helped too by sharing

founded in 1895 and consisted of
an eight-week summer season of
daily orchestral classical music
concerts and other annual events.
Members of the audience often
dressed in a British theme or add
a splash of red, white and blue,
as well as participate in the event
by singing with the choir and
orchestra.

director, Barry Wilkins said he
hoped to see the same at the local
event held at the Bacchus Marsh
Public Hall on Sunday May 7.
Mr Wilkins said the special guest
soloist was a celebrated Australian
tenor who recently returned from
a singing engagement in Europe
to specifically perform for the
MLO Proms Concert.
Robert Barbaro is a highly sort
after tenor who commenced
training in classical voice and
performing in operas whilst
completing his degrees in Arts
and Law at Monash University.
He has since performed major
roles with State, National and
International opera companies,
as well as leading roles in music
theatre.
Mr Barbaro was part of a
world tour with internationally
renowned singing group The
Tenors and appeared in their 2014
Broadway album.
The MLO performance, to be
held from 2pm, will feature the
traditional selections of Rule
Britannia, Jerusalem and Pomp
and Circumstance.
John Kent, the pipe major from
the Clans of the West Highland
Pipe Band at Melton, will perform
Amazing Grace and Highland
Cathedral with the orchestra.

door from 1pm, with general
admission just $25.

international cross country
competition.
The 23-year-old Bacchus
Marsh resident finished
29th in the Womens Senior
Race of the 2017 IAAF
World Cross Country
Championships held in
Kampala, Uganda on March
26.
Anna was the leading
Australian in the race,
finishing the 10-kilometre
course in a time of 35:20.
It was a bit of a surprise,
she said.
I hadnt really mentioned
it to anyone besides my
coach, but going in to the
race, the main goal was to
try and be the first Aussie
across the line and anything
else that came with that
would just be a bonus, so as
soon as I crossed the finish
line I was pretty stoked.
The event was held on
a Sunday afternoon in
28-degree heat and 80 per
cent humidity.
Anna said it was one of
the toughest races she had
competed in to date.
The course had a lot of
man-made hills and ditches
and there were two or three
sections where they had
chucked a few logs down,
which definitely made
things pretty difficult, she
said.

With the harsh conditions,
as well as the elite field
and difficult course, I was
definitely feeling it by the
end, but the experience
itself was amazing.
All the girls in the open
women team were a really
good group of people. We
obviously all wanted to go
out and beat each other,
but in the week prior to the
race we all got along really
all felt a bit after 24-hours of
travel.
In the lead up to the race,
everyone just tried to do
something similar to what
we would back home. We
took it pretty easy with a
few easy jogs and one mid-
week speed session to get
the legs ticking over. Other
than that, it was just about
keeping ourselves occupied
so to avoid going too crazy
or being too nervous before
race day.
Anna returned home at the
end of March and travelled
straight to Canberra to
compete in a half-marathon
on Sunday (April 2). She
was pipped at the line
by Australian marathon
runner Milly Clark, but
finished in a time that now
qualifies her for World
University Games.

I could stick on her, but
having that experience as a
marathon runner, she knew
how to strategise and in the

into individual titles, to help formalise the estate but the

accommodate the plans.

Development Assessment Committee meeting.
Under regulations, the sizes of the shops mean that each
requires eight parking spaces that are currently provided
but with the subdivision plans, ten car parking spaces would
be lost.
Ms Traianon told the meeting that many of the car spaces
are often left vacant, or are used by tenants and customers
from other shops.
The justification for the request is that the common
property parking area is not for the purpose of public car
parking and is restricted to the operators of each of the shops
and their staff, and that 22 car spaces is adequate, read a
council report tabled at the meeting.
Which is where the subdivision found its problems. The
recommendation in the report was to refuse the subdivision,
based on the reduction of parking spaces, and noting that
without the car parking issue it would have been approved
without a problem.
The applicant also maintains that the public who know
about this car parking area use it to access Main Street via the
walk-way on the eastern side of the shops and the applicant
is by default providing public car parking which is not their
responsibility, the report noted.
At the meeting, the discussion between councillors and
council officers on councils history of granting car park
exemptions was robust.
Parking in the CBD is at a premium. This is a site that
has the ability to provide car parking, an officer told the
meeting.
It is a fundamental difference of opinion we see it as black
and white.
However, councillors decided to pass a motion to grant the
permit, but with conditions to be inserted, with the matter
set to return to the next DAC meeting for confirmation of the
conditions and approval.

ANZAC Day in Moorabool

The number of War veterans may be rapidly dwindling
but the same cannot be said for the crowds that support
ANZAC Day marches and services.
A number of towns across the Moorabool Shire held
marches and unveiled new plaques, in honour of past
servicemen and women.
Ballan held a dawn service for what is believed to
be the first time. As Father Glen Wesley said at the
beginning of the service, No one can tell me when the
last one was! An official march followed at 1pm with
laying of wreaths.
Bungaree had a service and gunfire breakfast after
unveiling an Honour Board dedicated to Vietnam
Veterans. Four of the six veterans honoured were in
attendance.
Balliang held a service at their hall and the Lal Lal

community officially opened and unveiled an ANZAC
memorial park.
Lal Lal and Bacchus Marsh both held their services on
Sunday 23 April with Bacchus Marsh also holding a
dawn service on 25 April.

Raising a child with autism
can have its difficulties, but
for Bacchus Marsh mum Bec
Hughes, she said she just
needs an extra pair of paws.
Ms Hughes is attempting
to raise money for an au-
tism assistance dog for her
5-year-old son, Ryan.
Assistance dogs are
matched with children and
young adults on the autism
spectrum in order to provide
support in a number of areas
including communication
skills, social relationships,
environmental understand-
ing and behaviour patterns.
Ms Hughes said the dogs
provide a constant partner
and companion for the child
to bond with.
In public, most children
are tethered to the dog,
which acts as an anchor for
the child who may bolt or
run away when over-stimu-
lated, she said.
The dogs are trained to
become a canine version of a
weighted sensory blanket to
help the child when the in-
evitable meltdown occurs.
Ryan is currently on the

waiting list for an assistance
dog, however the animal
doesnt come cheap, with
a price tag of more than
$26,500.
These type of dogs are ex-
pensive and there is no gov-
ernment funding, as train-
ing them is still a fairly new
concept, Ms Hughes said.
The price covers the puppy
from the moment it is born.
It pays for vaccinations and
de-sexing, the weeks lead-
ing up to being picked up
and the extra training which
occurs every one to two-
years over its lifetime.
Ms Hughes said an assistant
dog would help to ensure
her son is safe at all times.
Ryan is such a lovely little
boy, but he has these huge
meltdowns which have seen
him destroy a classroom on
the second day of school.
That was something that
upset me so much, yet due to
his lack of empathy, he had
no concept of that.
When we go to the shop-
ping centre he has what
they call a sensory overload,
where all of the noise, colour
and people comes rushing at
him at a hundred miles per
hour and he doesnt know
how to process it, so he
runs up and down the isles
shouting.
With an assistance dog,
Ryan will be physically con-
nected to it in order to pre-
vent him from moving away.
The dog will be used as a
weight to slow or stop him,
which may lower the likeli-
hood of his breakdowns.

A young Bacchus Marsh
man who evaded a random
breath test was already dis-
qualified from driving, a
court has heard.
Tyson Barry appeared in the
Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
Court on Friday (April 28)
charged with failing to stop
vehicle on police direction.
The court heard the 21-year-
old failed to pull over despite
a police officer directing him
to do so at about 11:20am on
August 27 last year.
The preliminary breath test
site was set up on Halletts
Way in Darley.
Police informant, Ser-
geant John Cody from the
Moorabool Highway Patrol,
said the police vehicle was
parked on the western side
of the road, just short of Car-
ey Crescent.
He said two vehicles were
stationary in the testing
line when the accused was
directed to pull over by
Senior Constable Shaun
Woodhouse.
The court heard that the po-
lice officer waved a 20-centi-
metre long baton with flash-

ing lights at the accused,
who was driving a white
Toyota van.
Sergeant Cody said the ac-
cused continued to drive
away from the line of test-
ing, travelling on the wrong
side of the road to do so.
Barry was allegedly recog-
nised by both Sergeant Cody
and Senior Constable Wood-
house as they had both had
dealings with him in the
past.
Sergeant Cody said the ac-
cused was the owner of a
disqualified license and that
the white van was unregis-
tered at the time.
Barrys defence questioned
the evidence given in court,
stating that there was no
confirmation that it was his
client that was driving the
vehicle.
However, Sergeant Cody
and Senior Constable Wood-
house said they were both
positive that Barry was the
driver as they had spoken to
him on multiple occasions in
the past and were aware he
drove a white Toyota van.
The court heard Barry had
a number of prior driving
offences including driving
while disqualified and ex-
ceeding the legal blood alco-
hol limit.
Magistrate Louis Hill told
the court he was satisfied be-
yond reasonable doubt that
the driver of the vehicle was
indeed the accused.
In terms of his driving his-
tory, he has made a good ef-
fort to make a name for him-
self, which I am sure is why
he was recognised by police
on the day, he said.
Barry was fined $1,500 and
disqualified from driving for
six months.

years there had been some
very disappointing out-
comes for Ballan. The match
started well for the Blues
and they managed to hold
onto the lead all day. Nick
Kettle and Sam Sher teamed
up in the centre and kept up
that centre dominance all
day. Jake Wilkinson as ever
gave great drive in defence
and up forward the Blues
had nine individual goal
kickers lead by Adam Kurz-
man who booted four. So the
young Blues squad finally
got to sing the song on a
ground that has in the past
been a very unhappy hunt-
ing ground. Coach Jason
McNamara was delighted
with the win but under no
illusions as to the challenge
next week against Beaufort
who are now certainly finals

Last weekend the G B Forestry
Cobras unveiled their 2016
Senior Premiership Flag in front
of a big crowd. Ironically the
weekends game was actually
against Sunbury who we defeated
in the Grand Final. Though both
clubs are enemies on the field,
Sunbury were very supportive
on the day and lined up with our
players as the flag was unveiled,
