Preparing for installation

Introduction The UMUX 1500 is a Multi-service Access System. Because of its
modularity and various traffic units, it is possible to configure the
UMUX 1500 for a wide range of applications.
The subrack of the UMUX 1500 can accommodate up to 21 standard width
UMUX units (printed board assemblies).
Most of the units are traffic units with interfaces for external traffic signals or
provide processing for traffic signals. A set of units that is common for all the
UMUX NEs provides NE control and power functions. Restrictions can apply
for the use of such units in a particular type of NE.
Apart from the COBU<X> control unit and the POSU<X> power converter
units, the implementation of all other units depends on your specific
application.
The UMUX 1500 Installation Guide covers the aspects of NE installation
but provides no description of the NE commissioning and operation.
You find UMUX 1500 technical information and the description of the
commissioning procedures and operation as follows:
UMUX 1500 Technical Description, refer to [202].
The UMUX 1500 Technical Description describes the UMUX 1500, its
features and elements, the system architecture and provides all the
relevant technical data and information for system planning.
UMUX User Guide, refer to [302].
The UMUX User Guide describes the UMUX NE commissioning and
operation.
UCST/System Operation Basics, refer to [401].
The UCST/System Operation Basics provides descriptions of all the
generic functions available for commissioning and operation of the
UMUX 1500 and its units.

Cable documentation
Cable descriptions For a detailed description of the cable application and installation, refer to
the user guides of the units. The UMUX Cables Manual [310] provides a
summary of all cables with cable finders.

Ordering codes In the Technical Customer Documentation (TCD) of the UMUX MAP, cables
are identified with an internal reference code. This internal reference is not
an ordering code but allows expressive and logical identification of the
cables with respect to their application and the physical location of the
corresponding connector.
The "Cable Documentation Code Reference Table" [121] provides the
resolution table for the cable reference code used in the TCD and the
corresponding ordering number.
Various signal cables (terminated with the appropriate unit connector) are
available. You can specify the length of the cable with your order. Some
cables are provided as cable sets. There are also connector sets available
to allow on-site manufacturing of cables.
The UMUX Cables Manual [310] provides a summary of all cables with
ordering codes and cable finders.

The FANUV is a 19-inch fan unit for the UMUX 1500 subrack. The
FANUV is separately ordered and has its own packing.
For more information of the FANUV, refer to [502].
DUPOS option
The DUPOS is a multifunctional connection box for the UMUX subrack
that allows you to feed the UMUX with power from 2 separate power
supply circuits and to connect the FANUV to the UMUX subrack. The
DUPOS is separately ordered and has its own packing.
For more information of the DUPOS, refer to [504].
75 Ohm patch panel option
The 75 patch panel is a 19-inch subrack that provides the 75
connectors for the UMUX units with 75 interfaces. The patch panel is

A full equipment protection requires redundant external
connection points for the management communication.
Each control unit requires a separate cable for the
corresponding interfaces. This applies to management
communication via the QX- and Q1- interfaces. Normally, the F-
interface is locally connected. The connection to the EOC
requires an adapter cable for the COBU<X> - SIFOX.
For more information on the cables for the management interfaces refer to
the COBUX/COBUV [315] or COBUL [331] user guides and the ordering
codes provided in the "UMUX Cable Documentation Reference Table" [121].

Test equipment The installation of the basic equipment (subrack, control unit, power units)
does not require special test equipment. Requirements for test equipment for
the traffic units and signals depend on the type of interfaces and signals to
be tested.
Please contact KEYMILE for recommendations on test equipment, if you
need information on suitable test equipment for a particular traffic interface
of the UMUX.

Power distribution It is essential to plan the supply of DC power before the installation of the
equipment.
The installation of the power supply for the UMUX 1500 requires a local
power distribution for the individual NEs in the rack and a corresponding
fusing for each NE. It is a good practice to start the installation of the
UMUX 1500 only after the implementation of the power supply and fuses.
For details of the UMUX 1500 power supply, refer to the paragraph "Power
Supply" and "Grounding and power supply" below.

General instructions for installation

EMC and ESD The UMUX subrack with the front cover installed represents a Faraday cage
considerations like construction if the cables are connected to the cable grounding bar as
instructed. Conductive metal sheets all around the subrack protect the
UMUX 1500 from ESD and electromagnetic fields.
The 19-inch mounting flanges of the subrack are conductive and provide a
conductive contact to the rack if the rails of the rack provide a conductive
surface. The power supply connection of the subrack provides a lead for
system ground. The system ground connects internally to the construction of
the subrack.
When in operation, the UMUX is protected against ESD in accordance with
IEC/EN 61000-4-2 and in accordance with the specified EMC properties,
provided that
all parts have been installed as instructed in the technical customer
documentation
all the equipment is properly grounded
the UMUX subrack is installed with its front cover
KEYMILE approved cables are used
KEYMILE gives no warranty for cables manufactured by third party and
will not accept liability for EMC/ESD compliance if its equipment is
operated with cables that are not approved by KEYMILE.
All the plug-in units used with the UMUX are ESD sensitive units;
they must be handled with care.

Respecting the following rules will help you to avoid early equipment
damage and is a prerequisite for successful equipment installation and
operation:
The original packing provides the best protection for your equipment.
Leave the equipment in its original packing until you install it in the
subrack.
Respect ESD protection regulations. To prevent damage of electronic
components by electrostatic discharges, wear a grounded protective
wriststrap.

Selection of site for You should consider the following aspects for the selection of the installation
installation site:
If the UMUX is installed within cabinets or similar, select sites for the
cabinets which are not permanently exposed to direct sun radiation.
Avoid sites with important differences between the daily maximum and
the nightly minimum temperature (except for cabinets with air
conditioning).
Watch for constant temperature and constant relative humidity (within
specified range!). Operation at lower temperatures extends the long-term
reliability (MTTF) and the lifetime of the equipment.
Do not install the UMUX 1500 near or on top of equipment that dissipates
heat.

page 10 of 63 User Guide Systems, UMUX 1500 Installation EN/LZTBU 320 215/3 RA
UMUX 1500, Installation Guide KEYMILE AG

Make sure that the selected installation allows the equipment to dissipate
the heat created within the UMUX 1500.
Select a dust-free room that is normally closed and not generally
accessible.
Do not install the UMUX 1500 near equipment that produces strong
electromagnetic fields (e.g. large transformers, power rectifiers,
generators, electrical machines, railways etc.)
Only proper grounding of the equipment will protect you and your
equipment from lightning. Make sure that the selected site provides
efficient grounding terminals.
A carefully chosen installation site is the first step to reliable and error-free
system operation.

Units and heat dissipation Traffic units operated in the UMUX subrack can require the implementation
of the FANUV unit or of a similar device. Active ventilation is mandatory
for units which
create high local power dissipation (hot spots) while the unit's average
power dissipation is moderate.
dissipate more than 11 W per slot (20.32 mm).
The UMUX unit summary [210] indicates per unit which units require active
ventilation (mandatory).
The specifications on the power consumption provided with each unit
description and the guidelines provided in [208] allow you to evaluate the
total heat dissipation of an NE.

Subrack The ambient temperature for operation of the UMUX 1500 without active
ventilation is rated from -20C to +55C with a relative humidity of up to 95%
(non-condensing). For detailed specification of the temperature range for
UMUX operation and related operational conditions, refer to [201].
It is essential that the site of installation provides an ambient
temperature within the specified range at any time, in order to
preserve the system specifications and to prevent the system from
overheating.
If you plan to stack systems, take into account that the system
below will heat up the air defining the ambient conditions for the
system(s) above!

Since the UMUX 1500 is a flexible Multiservice Access System with high
modularity, it is possible to implement a variety of traffic interfaces and
configurations in a subrack. Depending on the traffic interfaces and services
installed, the units in the subrack can dissipate considerable amounts of
heat. For reliable operation of the UMUX, it is essential to evacuate this heat
from the UMUX subrack and from its environment.
The maximum heat dissipation (of units) within the UMUX 1500
subrack with only natural convection is 150 W and less than
11 W per slot.

EN/LZTBU 320 215/3 RA User Guide Systems, UMUX 1500 Installation page 11 of 63
UMUX 1500, Installation Guide KEYMILE AG

You must install the FANUV unit or a similar device (normally with
heat deflection shields) to evacuate the heat from the UMUX
subrack if the
UMUX installation exceeds any of the above conditions for the
heat dissipation in the subrack or slots.
UMUX has units which imperatively require active ventilation for
the UMUX subrack (as indicated in [210]).

To avoid overheating of the equipment due to inadequate installation adhere

to the following instructions.
Do not block the natural air convection through the subrack and its cards.
Avoid the installation of other equipment directly above the subrack.
Respect a minimum distance of 2 HU (2 x 44.45 mm) to the equipment
above.
Avoid hot spots (concentration of highly dissipating units/interfaces).
Distribute units with high power dissipation evenly in the subrack.
Do not install subracks without a cable tray. The cable tray is mandatory
for the UMUX 1500 and allows cold air to flow into the subrack.
If you stack equipment, install heat deflection shields between the
subracks (refer to figures and paragraphs below). Depending on power
dissipation in the subrack, you need fans to force the flow of the air
through the subrack.
Calculate the maximum expected heat dissipation for your UMUX 1500
subrack. If you plan future upgrades, consider higher power dissipation.
Design the heat exchange capacity of your installation according to
calculated heat dissipation. Fan units and/or air conditioning might be
required.
The installation of the FANUV fan unit on top of the subrack improves the
airflow through the subrack considerably.

Arrangement in the rack The heat deflection shield removes the hot air rising through the subrack(s)
below to the front or rear of the rack. If there is no equipment producing heat
below the subrack of the UMUX 1500, the heat deflection is not required.
Depending on the evacuation of the heated up air, there are two ways of
installing the heat deflection shield (refer to figures below):
Exhaust to the rear:
The heat deflection shield is installed in such way that the cold air flows
from the front into the subrack above and evacuates as heated up air
from the subracks below to the rear (recommended for 19-inch
installation).

The additional installation of fan units drastically increases the efficiency of

such heat evacuation. The fan units are installed between the subrack and
the heat deflection shield on top. This arrangement increases the airflow
through the subrack and thus the possible power dissipation of the traffic
units implemented in the subrack.
The FANUV is a fan unit designed for the operation with the UMUX 1500.
For details of the FANUV, refer to [502].
It is essential to maintain the specified range of the ambient
temperature for the subrack in order to preserve the system
specifications and prevent the system from overheating.

For illustration of this basic arrangement of the UMUX subrack, FANUV and
heat deflection shield in the rack, refer to the figure below.

The installation of stacked subracks in standard ETSI racks

requires other arrangements, since there is normally no room for
the evacuation of the heated air at the rear of the racks.

Please note that:

If the equipment is stacked, a heat deflection shield is installed
on top of each subrack (or the FANUV) to evacuate the heat
produced in the subrack. Depending on the rack, the top
equipment does not require deflection.
A heat deflection shield installed below the subrack might help
to remove the hot air produced below.
Please note that it is possible to use other heat deflecting
devices. In such cases, the installation of the heat deflection
shields as instructed above might become obsolete.

Considering the above it is possible to create a layout for the UMUX

equipment and heat deflection devices in the rack.

Power supply
Supply principles The UMUX 1500 subrack provides an internal connection point (P in the
figure below) for the power supply with
1 connection point for the UT (-48/-60 VDC) conductor
2 connection points for the 0 V conductor and system ground (subrack
construction).
The cable tray provides the connection points for the external power supply
circuit(s). The short cable C connects the connection point P of the
UMUX 1500 subrack to the connection point for the external power supply
circuits on the UMUX cable tray. For the connection of the external power
supply circuits, the cable tray support 2 options (refer to the figure below):
A Standard power supply (1 power supply circuit)
The cable tray carries the connector block with the external power
supply circuit and provides the power connection for the UMUX
subrack.
B Power supply with DUPOS (2 power supply circuits)
The cable tray carries the DUPOS multifunctional connection box with
the external power supply circuit. The DUPOS provides the power
connection for the UMUX subrack.
It is possible to upgrade an installation from A to B.

Standard power supply The standard power supply is in principle for 1 power supply circuit (as
shown in the figure above).
However, if redundancy for the DC power supply is required with the
standard supply set-up, it is possible to connect redundant supply circuits as
shown in the figure below.
The UMUX subrack requires and accepts only 1 power supply circuit. At the
power distribution point, diodes decouple the 2 external supply circuits for
the power supply connection point on the adapter/cable tray of the
UMUX 1500.
Normally, the power distribution panel of the rack provides the required
fuses and decoupling (refer to figure below).

and D<n>2 (n = 1 4) to the individual connection point for the Vbat

conductor feeding the UMUX subrack. A fuse in the distribution panel
protects this conductor individually per subrack. This design does not protect
the power lines between the power distribution panel in the rack (fuse) and
the connection points of the individual UMUX 1500 subracks.
Please note that:
The equipment for power distribution as shown in the figure
above is not part of the UMUX equipment.
If the installation has no connection point for the DC power
supply on the cable tray, the principles of the redundant DC
power supply remains unchanged. The fused power cable from
the distribution box is directly terminated on the UMUX 1500
subrack.

Supply with the DUPOS The DUPOS multifunctional connection box allows you to directly integrate
(Option) the connection points for the external power supply circuits PS1 and PS2
(refer to the figure above) on the UMUX cable tray.
Please note that the DUPOS has no fuses for the external power
supplies.
The power sources PS1 and PS2 must be fused for the operation
with DUPOS.

The DUPOS multifunctional connection box provides features and functions

as follows:
Connection point for 2 external power supply circuits for the UMUX
subrack and the FANUV (Option).
Monitoring of the external power supply circuits for failures. Failures are
alarmed via the COBU<X> interfaces for external alarms.
Monitoring of the FANUV unit for failures. FANUV failures are alarmed
via the COBU<X> interfaces for external alarms.
It is possible to implement the DUPOS unit at any time (with service
interruption).
Please note that you need additionally the commissioning for the
COBU<X> interfaces for external alarm signals as described in [504].

For detailed information of the DUPOS including installation and upgrade

procedures, refer to [504].

Wire gauge The minimum wire gauge required for the conductors of the power supply
lines (for 1 UMUX) between the power distribution panel (or DUPOS) and
the UMUX subrack is 1.5 mm2 (2.5 mm2 is recommended).

EN/LZTBU 320 215/3 RA User Guide Systems, UMUX 1500 Installation page 19 of 63
UMUX 1500, Installation Guide KEYMILE AG

Fuses It is essential to fuse each power supply circuit (-Vbat = -48/-60 VDC) for the
UMUX 1500 subrack at the power source side with a 10 A slow-blow fuse
(Fuse <n> (n = 1 4) in the figure above).
Omitting the fuses in the power supply circuit might lead to
seriously damaged equipment or create a fire in the case of
overload or short circuits.

Grounding and power The UMUX 1500 is telecommunication equipment compliant to protection
supply class 1.
It is mandatory to connect the equipment to suitable protective
ground!

The electro-mechanical design of the UMUX 1500 takes special care with
respect to EMC. The subrack of the UMUX covered with its front cover
represents a "Faraday cage" type construction, if the signal cables are
shielded and the equipment is grounded as instructed. The subrack features
a conductive coating, which allows large area conductive connections
between the subrack and the mounting rails of the rack, provided that the
rails are conductive as well.
With installed front cover, the UMUX 1500 achieves compliance
with the EMC specification (of the UMUX 1500) without dummy
covers for empty slots.
The installation of dummy covers instead of the front cover will
however not guarantee compliance with EMC specifications.

The 0-volt potential of the (external) power supply is directly connected to

the mechanical construction of the subrack (M_GND). The (internal)
electronic ground GND (the 0-volt reference potential at the output of the
internal power converter(s)) is fed to the backplane for the distribution to the
units.
There the electronic ground GND is connected to the construction of the
subrack via the front panels of the traffic units. Diodes guarantee a
conductive path for dc - currents between the 2 ground systems, even if the
subrack has no inserted traffic units (diodes not shown in the figures below).
The power supply voltage UT (-48/-60 VDC) is first filtered (UTF) in the subrack
and then fed via the backplane to the power converter units and other units
requiring UTF (refer to figure below).

The subrack provides three connection points for system ground. In order to
achieve effective grounding at least one of the three connection points has
to be connected to the system ground:
1) Direct connection of the wire "M_GND of subrack construction" to the
system ground.
2) Conductive installation of the subrack into the rack (frame), which
must have a suitable connection to the system ground.
3) Connection to the system ground via the connection point of the
grounding bar (thread M4).
The front panel of the POSUS power converter unit is isolated from
the electronic ground GND.

In order to preserve the specified EMC characteristics of the

UMUX 1500 it is essential to adhere to the following instructions:
Connect the subrack properly to the system ground.
Check the fitting between the subrack, the mounting rails and/or
the rack for conductivity.
Use (shielded) signal cables as instructed.
Connect the shields of the signal cables to the grounding bar of
the subrack.
Implement the ferrite toroids on the signal cables as instructed
in the user guides of the units.
Cover the subrack with its front cover.
It is essential to place the UMUX ferrite toroid side of the signal
cables (e.g. cables for subscriber line interfaces) between the
grounding bar of the subrack and the connector of the unit.

Special considerations for

power supply from AC mains
General The UMUX 1500 does not provide inlets for AC power supply. Instead, an
external AC/DC converter converts the AC mains to a suitable DC power.
The converted DC voltage has to comply with the specified range for the
power supply of the UMUX 1500.
A reliable AC power supply for the UMUX 1500 requires the
implementation of a battery backup for the converted DC power.

Lightning and over-voltage The UMUX units provide secondary over-voltage protection for their
protection interfaces in co-operation with external equipment.
The primary protection (as required for lightning protection) is normally
implemented at the connection points of the signal cables to the outside
world. Depending on the units and interfaces, the implementation of gas
discharge tubes at the connection point is suitable for providing such
protection.
Poor cabling and grounding present a danger to personnel and
might lead to seriously damaged equipment.

For more information on lightning protection and corresponding

recommendations, please refer to [505].

The adapters provide M6 nuts for the fixing holes of the 19-inch
mounting standard.

To install the UMUX equipment into an ETSI rack you have to first install the
adapters into your ETSI rack:
Select appropriate type of adapter for left and right side. (Watch for the
fixing threads of the cable tray).
Locate fixing position and fit captive nuts.
Secure adapters using M6 screws. Tighten the screws provisionally.
The remaining installation steps are identical to the steps for 19-inch rack
installation with some minor differences.
It is good installation standard to follow the steps for the installation of the
UMUX in the order shown below.

Patch panels (optional) Some of the traffic interfaces might require local patch panels to adapt the
interface cables of the UMUX to cables of other characteristics or to provide
points of connection according to the local standard.
Patch panels are optional items provided on request only. A description and
corresponding instructions for installation are provided together with the
patch panel.
A 19-inch patch panel is available which provides coaxial connectors for the
75 interfaces of the LOMIF (LOMI4) and of other units with asymmetrical
E12 interfaces.
For details of the 75 patch panel, refer to [501].

The UMUX 1500 equipment Check the unpacked equipment before you start the installation:
Check for complete consignment and for correct designation (refer to
ordering information).
Check the equipment for damages due to storage, transport or handling.
Check the front and backplane connectors (if any) of the units for
damaged pins.
Leave units in their protective ESD bags until you plan to plug them into
the subrack.
Please note:
Do not throw away any pieces packed with the equipment; you
might use them later.
There are no connectors packed with the basic unit. The
connectors and cables are in separate packing.
Keep the original packing of the components if you plan to
move or dispatch the equipment later; the original packing
provides the best protection for the equipment.

The signal cables All external equipment connects to the UMUX (unit and traffic interfaces,
maintenance interfaces, alarm and clock interfaces) via the connectors on
the front panel of the units. KEYMILE provides signal cables of variable
length for all traffic and system interfaces.
For the visual inspection of signal cables check the following:
Mechanical condition of the connectors and the cables.
The contact holes of the connector must be clean.
Mechanical condition of the latching system of the units.
KEYMILE provides cables with latching clips.
The labelling (designation) of the cables must conform to the
documentation of the installation.

Installing the DC power supply

Standard power supply The following instructions apply for UMUX 1500 installations without DUPOS
(without DUPOS) and prepare the cable tray for the connection of the power supply to the
UMUX subrack.

Figure 34: Cable tray with installed WAGO connector block and cables

Make sure that the - 48/60 VDC power is switched off before you
connect the power leads to the connector block.

To install the WAGO connector block onto the cable tray proceed as follows:
Take the original power cable provided, with the WAGO connection
assembled, and snap the studs of the block into the 3 holes from inside
the cable tray, while the cable tail is looking to the front of the cable tray.
Connect the cables providing the power supply and system ground on
the WAGO connector block. The block has a cage spring wire grip. Strip
the insulation at a maximum of 8 mm to 9 mm. Open the grip by pushing
down with a screwdriver, push the stripped wire in, and release the grip
(refer to figure below).

Push the spring grip (1) to open the contact.

Insert the cable (2) into the contact.
Release the spring grip (3).
Repeat steps (1) to (3) for all 3 wires.
Never use power cables without sufficient insulation (e.g. near the
WAGO connector block). Short circuits with flash over might result.

Power supply with DUPOS The following description applies for UMUX 1500 installations with DUPOS
(OPTION) and prepares the cable tray for the connection of the power supply to the
UMUX subrack.
The installation of the power supply with the DUPOS is different from the
standard procedure described above.
The installation of the DC power supply with the DUPOS option is described
in [504] and applies as well for upgrades of the standard supply to power
supply with the DUPOS.

Tying signal cables to the The cable tray makes the installation of the external cabling for the units
cable tray easier. It provides a means to arrange and fix the cables before the
installation of the subrack and thus provides space for convenient working.
On the front, the cable tray carries a label bar with numbers corresponding
to the slot positions of the subrack. It is essential that you align the position
of the connectors and cables for each unit and interface with respect to the
front line of the cable tray.
Depending on the unit and its traffic signals the signal cable provides
different EMC measures:
The (signal) cables have a common metallic braid shield for all the signal
leads of the cable and a
one-ferrite EMC filter (refer to figures below)
two-ferrites EMC filter (refer to figures below)
To maintain the equipments EMC status signal cables without
braid shield are no longer supported!

The distance between the cable tray and the connector as well as the type
of the cable and connector depends on the plug-in unit (although identical
for most units and interfaces). The distance of the area with exposed cable
shield is constant with respect to the front line of the cable tray.

To install the cables onto the cable tray proceed as follows:

Label cables with their respective slot number (as previously
documented).
Align each cable on the cable tray with respect to the slot number.
Align the connectors with respect to the front line of the cable tray as
indicated with the installation instructions for the corresponding unit (refer
to the figures above). The cable length between connector and cable tray
depends on the unit and interface (for detailed information, refer to the
user guide of the corresponding unit).
Place front cable ties in order to allow cables to be bent neatly to the
grounding bar in the front part of the cable tray.
Install the rear cable ties. The positions of these cable ties depend on the
cable type (refer to figures above).
Secure each cable loosely (e.g. using cable ties). It should still be
possible to move cables back and forwards. The signal cables have to be
arranged (and fixed) on the cable tray so as not to block the access to
adjacent units in the subrack.
Cables should be positioned so as not to block the airflow into the
subrack. Blocking the airflow might lead to overheating inside the
subrack.

Traffic units The user guides of the corresponding traffic units provide the layout of the
cables used for the interfaces of the unit. For most units with traffic interfaces
one cable connects all the interfaces of the unit.
For details on the installation of signal cables refer to the corresponding
(unit) user guides.

Control unit The control unit features the following interfaces with corresponding cables:
Management interfaces
Alarm interfaces (inputs / outputs)
Synchronisation interfaces (inputs / outputs)
The user guide of the corresponding COBU<X> control unit provides the
layout of the cables. All cables for the COBU<X> interfaces including the
cables for the QX-interface are shielded. It is essential for the specified EMC
characteristics of the UMUX that you connect all shields properly to the
grounding bar of the subrack.
For details, please refer to the user guides [315] and [313].
Cable tray and cables are now ready for the installation of the subrack.

Tying cables to their The cables terminated on the UMUX are connected to their connection
connection points points in accordance with the documentation of the installation and to the
customer's specifications.
In order to maintain the EMC characteristics of the UMUX system,
it is essential to connect the shield of shielded cables at both sides,
at the UMUX grounding bar and at the external connection point
(e.g. distribution frame).

Patch panel (optional) The patch panel is an optional item provided on request only. Description
and instructions for installation are provided together with the patch panel.
A 19-inch patch panel is available which provides coaxial connectors for the
75 Ohm interfaces of the LOMIF (LOMI4) and of other units with
asymmetrical E12 interfaces.
For details, refer to [501].
Lightning protection The lightning protection is implemented at the connection points of the cables to
the outside world. The UMUX equipment only provides secondary protection.
For more information on the implementation of lightning and over-voltage
protection, refer to the corresponding paragraphs in this chapter.

Connecting the alarm

interfaces
All NEs The COBU<X> control unit provides
Alarm interface outputs (solid state relay contacts):
Urgent alarm (UA)
Non-urgent alarm (NA)
Alarm interface inputs (4) for electrical signals
The termination of each alarm interface depends on the devices connected.
For the technical specifications of the interfaces, refer to the description
[213], [215] or [201]. Check for compatibility with the connected equipment.
The FANUV [502] and DUPOS [504] options use the COBU<X>
interfaces for external alarm signals (inputs).
Special cables are provided with the options.

NE with redundant control units For systems with redundant control units only:
Alarm inputs (refer to figure below):
For full protection, it is essential to connect the inputs of the backup
COBU<X> separately from the default control unit. This requires
Separate conductors for the two signal paths between the external
connection point and the control units. Normally the external alarm
source is a dry relay contact, which does not require drivers.
Optionally (e.g. for high resistance solid state alarm sources)
individual line drivers at the external connection point for each of the
two signal cables.
A reasonable compromise relies on one common driver for a high
resistance solid alarm source at the external connection point for the two
signal conductors (provided there is sufficient capacity of the line driver).

Alarm outputs:
For full protection, it is essential to connect the outputs of the backup
COBU<X> separately from the default control unit. There are two
principles possible for the provision of external alarms:
Each control unit drives its own external alarm device. The installation
is fully redundant.
Common wiring of the alarm contacts of both control units (The 2
types of contacts require 2 different schemes of connection):
AC: For alarm contacts Active Closed the corresponding
conductors of each control unit are connected as wired
or e.g. at the external connection point. The NE drives
an external alarm device between the AC and the COM
contacts as one Active Closed contact.
AO: For alarm contacts Active Open the corresponding
conductors of each control unit are connected in series
with the external connection point. The NE drives an
external alarm device between the two AO contacts of
the two control units as one Active Open contact.
The two COM contacts are not used.
The figure below shows the wiring and the relay states for
- Active COBU<X> in slot 11 (inactive unit in slot 12)
- UA pending

All the alarm contacts of the COBU<X> are solid state relay
contacts.
Connecting
synchronisation interfaces
All NE The COBU<X> control unit provides interfaces for 2048 kHz timing signals
as follows:
Outputs
PETS driven outputs (sources on the COBU<X>):
ESO-1 3
SETS driven outputs (sources on the SYNI<X>):
ESO-4
Inputs
PETS driven inputs (timing system on the COBU<X>):

(X) The corresponding feature is available with the templates and

hardware as follows:
COBUX 145, 146: ROFBU 367 103/1 R2B
COBUV 137, 237: ROFBU 367 103/2 R1A
COBUQ 144: ROFBU 367 114/1 R2B
Older hardware of the COBUX, COBUQ and the COBUL do not
support the (X) features.
For details on hardware versions of the control units, that are
compatible with the interfaces above (120 and galvanic
isolation), refer to the release notes of the UMUX Multiservice
Platform.
Due to the physical limitations of the connector, it is not possible to contact
more than 4 timing signals (sum of input and output) at a time. For this
reason 4 types of cables are proposed:
- COBUX/C1.1-1: Synchronisation ESI-1 / ESO-1, 2, 3 (all 75 )
- COBUX/C1.1-3: Synchronisation ESI-1 / ESO-1, 2, 4 (all 75 )
- COBUX/C1.1-4: Synchronisation ESI-1, 2 / ESO-1, 4 (all 75 )
- COBUX/C1.1-6: Synchronisation ESI-1 / ESO-1 (all 120 )
The requirements of the application define the appropriate cable. For
technical specifications of the interfaces, refer to the description [215] and
[213]. Check for compatibility with the connected equipment.
Timing signals require proper line termination!
It is possible to configure the inputs of the COBU<X> for a high
impedance or 75 Ohm termination (ESI-1 for 75/120 Ohm).
Normally the termination with 75 Ohm (ESI-1 and ESO-4 for
75/120 Ohm) is the best choice. It is possible to select High
impedance, if the timing signal is terminated externally but close
to the interface of the control unit.

page 46 of 63 User Guide Systems, UMUX 1500 Installation EN/LZTBU 320 215/3 RA
UMUX 1500, Installation Guide KEYMILE AG

NE with redundant control units For systems with redundant control units only:
Inputs synchronisation (refer to figure below):
For full protection, it is essential to connect the inputs of the backup unit
separately from the default control unit. Since the timing signals require
proper termination, additional considerations apply for installations with
redundant control units:
The inputs are terminated on each control unit either with 75 Ohm
(ESI-1 with 75/120 Ohm) or with high impedance. The physical
termination set via a jumper on the control unit is independent of the
active/standby state of the control unit. The settings have to be
identical for both units, since
a setting not matching the configuration creates an alarm
operation of 1 unit only (during repairs) will change the termination
There are several ways to terminate the timing signal properly:
a) Individual drivers at the external connection point for each
signal cable.
b) External termination of the timing signals close to the
units.

The figure shows only 1 timing signal and applies for a line impedance of 75
Ohm (line termination). A similar wiring applies for lines with 120 Ohm of line
impedance (termination).
It is essential to keep the non-terminated cable tails d1 and d2 short!
Sync outputs:
The timing signals on the outputs are active only if the control unit is
active. Proper termination of the timing signals provided, there are
several ways to handle the timing signals of the redundant control units
The timing signal outputs of the COBU<X> use separate cables to the
connection point. They are individually terminated on a device, which
selects the timing source for its output signal automatically between
the 2 inputs.
The timing signal outputs of the COBU<X> use a common cable,
which is terminated at the external connection point. It is essential to
keep the connection between the corresponding 2 outputs very close
in order to reduce signal distortions due to reflections from the non-
terminated tail.
The timing output of each control unit uses its own cable, which is
terminated at a common external connection point. Such wiring is only
possible if the cable and the termination at the common connection
point accurately match the impedance of the signal source. Any
mismatches will create distortions of the timing signal due to
uncontrolled reflections.

Connecting management
interfaces
All NE The management interfaces are normally terminated on the local craft device
(F-interface) or on an Ethernet device (QX-interface). Please refer to the
technical specifications of the equipment and the interfaces to check for
compatibility.
For technical specifications of the interfaces, refer to the description [215]
and [213]. Check for compatibility with the connected equipment.
For principles and details on the implementation of the management
communication of the UMUX, refer to [901].

NE with redundant control units For systems with redundant control units only:
QX-interface
The QX-interface is an Ethernet LAN interface. It is possible to connect
the interfaces of both control units to the LAN (e.g. via hub). Only the QX-
interface of the active control unit communicates. After the switchover to
the standby unit the system requires some time to update the address
resolution of the IP-address with the new MAC-address of the newly
active control unit.
Q1-(slave)interface
The Q1-interface is a bus interface. It is possible to connect the Q1-
interfaces of both control units parallel to the local Q-bus since there is
only one interface active. Although there is only one unit active, the
second unit loads the bus as any other device connected to the bus.
For this reason, a UMUX 1500 with redundant control units reduces the
remaining capacity of the Q-bus by two NEs.
Q1-master interface (for NEs with COBU<X> only)
The same requirements apply for the Q1-master interface as for the Q1-
interface.
Refer to the paragraph above.
F-interface
The main application of the F-interface is the commissioning and
maintenance of the UMUX via a local craft device. The local craft device
connects directly to the F-interface of the active unit at the time of such
access.
It is not possible to connect the F-interface in parallel. The F-interface of
each of the redundant control units requires its own termination on a
corresponding serial interface (or a selector box).
If the F-interface operates in the mode management communication via
EOC then the F-interface of each of the two redundant control units is
terminated on its own SIFOX interface (refer to the figure below).
To connect the COBU<X> to the EOC you need a standard SIFOXEOC
cable and the adapter cable COBUX/C3.1-3.

Installing the subrack The backplane at the rear of the subrack provides a 3-pin (fast-on) terminal
power cable for the power supply and the system ground. The subrack is delivered with a
power cable, one end terminated with a connector fitting this terminal, the
other end terminated with a WAGO connector (refer to figures below).
The matching WAGO connector block on the cable tray or DUPOS
terminates the external cables providing power supply and system ground.
If required, you can directly terminate a customised power supply
cable (without intermediate WAGO connector blocks) on the plug
fitting to the 3-pin (fast-on) terminal.
With this, you will lose the flexibility of the front access for the
connection of the power supply.

If you use the FANUV option, complete the installation of cables as

indicated in [502].

Installing heat deflection The heat deflection shield removes the hot air rising through the subrack(s)
shields and fan units below to the front or rear of the rack.

At position (6) at the right side of the subracks grounding bar there is a
supplementary connection point for system ground. The thread accepts M4
screws. It is possible to use this connection point as a bonding point for
wriststraps.
To remove the left side cable clamp from its grounding bar:
Turn the spring bracket to the left (1).
A screwdriver might help to unlatch the spring bracket.
Remove the left end of the clamp from the grounding bar by rotating it
outward (2).
Unhook the right end of clamp from the grounding bar and remove the
clamp completely (3).
Follow the same steps mirrored to the right to remove the right side clamp
from its grounding bar.

UMUX 1500, Installation Guide KEYMILE AG

To re-install the left side cable clamp to its grounding bar:

Check the placement of the conductive foam on the grounding bar and
cable clamp. Realign if appropriate.
Check the fit of the signal cables on the grounding bar. Realign if
appropriate.
Hook the right end of the clamp onto the grounding bar (4).
Rotate the left end of the clamp inward onto the grounding bar until the
spring bracket to the left snaps in (5).
Check both spring brackets for fit.
Follow the same steps mirrored to the right to reinstall the right side cable
clamp to its grounding bar.

Units and signal cables

Inserting units in the subrack Depending on the degree of commissioning specified with the system order,
the subrack of the UMUX 1500 is delivered without or with inserted units.
You can skip this paragraph if all units already occupy their position in the
subrack.
Units are sensitive to electrostatic discharges!
Use grounded protective wristband when handling units! Keep the
units in their ESD protective plastic bags until you use the units!
To insert units (new connector system):
Remove the cable clamp(s) from the grounding bar(s) of the subrack.
Follow steps (1) to (3) in figure above for the left and/or the right side
cable clamps.
Identify the slot for the plug-in unit and engage the unit to the upper and
lower rails. Slide unit half way in.
Insert plug-in unit as follows (refer to numbers (1x) in figure below)
Push both levers in outward position (11).
Slide the unit in until its connectors touch the front of the backplane
connectors (12). Do not insert completely!
To engage the unit with the backplane connectors, press carefully and
simultaneously the top lever downwards and the bottom lever
upwards (13). The lever movement will engage the connectors of the
unit to the backplane connectors.
Tighten both the top and bottom screws (14) to fix the unit to the
subrack.
Never use force to insert a unit!
