conducted the impact analyses this EA presents in. Because the
Bristol, Tennessee, plant expansion would occur within an existing
building, there would be no potential environmental impacts to the
surrounding environment in relation to interior building
modifications, and incremental operational increases in emissions,
effluent streams, and waste generation would be small and well
within existing permit limits. Exide has operated the plant for 15
years. For the Columbus, Georgia, plant the demolition of existing
structures, the construction of a building addition, and the
expansion of operations would occur within the existing site
boundaries. The onsite areas that would be affected have already
been disturbed and have been dedicated to industrial activities for
the past 46 years. The incremental operational increases in
emissions, effluent streams, and waste generation would be small
and well within existing permit limits. Emissions of carbon dioxide
could contribute to cumulative increases in greenhouse gases and

socioeconomic impacts would occur from increased employment
opportunities and spending in the affected local economies.

new electric starter. This project yielded the first car battery of the
modern type. (Within 5 years, there was a substantial field
of aftermarket brands in storage batteries and starters for
automobiles, as evidenced by the advertisements in automotive
trade journals of the era.)
When the United States entered World War I, Exide batteries were
used to operate airplane radio sets and power radio stations. In
1938, the Electric Storage Battery Company acquired the Giant
Storage Battery Company, and expanded into battery chargers and
testers.
During World War II, the Electric Storage Battery Company was a
major supplier of batteries for U.S. Navy submarines and primary
contractor for batteries used in theMark 18 electric torpedo. [4]

Arthur M. Hawkins resigned as chairman and chief executive officer
of Exide in October 1998.[7] Robert A. Lutz, former president and vice
chairman at Chrysler Corporation, was appointed Exide's Chairman
of the Board. He reorganized the worldwide management structure
into Global Business Units and sold off non-battery units to allow the
company to concentrate on its primary business.

India (Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal) and two
smelting operations. Its key export markets include Singapore,
Australia and Europe.
The company also has a 50% stake in ING Vysya Life Insurance

The battery lies hidden under the bonnet and is anessential
component of the vehicle. Regular care is a must, for if it in bad
shape, the car will refuse to move. "Push-start" is a solution but
cannot be carried on for long. A well-maintained battery lasts for two
years.
The Product
Purchase Occasions :
19 | P a g e
The automotive battery business consists of OE (original equipment)
and after-market or replacement market segments. The OE market is
around 1.2 millionunits and the larger replacement market is around
5 million units per annum.Purchase therefore occurs when the
current battery dies, which is usually after a period of
approximately two years.

For the rest 15 per cent of the pie, theres a clamour between
players like Prestolite, Volta, AC Delco, Delkor & Amaron and the
mid-range Panasonic batteries and high-end Varta batteries. Other
players in theorganized market are Tudor and Amco. The other zero-
maintenance batteries, apart from Amaron such as the German Varta
(OE supplier to Mercedes andBMW in Europe), are at much higher
price points. Other competitors are AmaraRaja ABLs Power Breed;
Middle East Battery Companys JV with Delphi;Dynex; EL; Furukawa;

manufacturing for use in the transportation industry. DOEs Proposed
Action in this EA is to provide a grant to partially fund expanded
manufacturing of two types of batteries at two existing Exide
Technologies plants: a spiral wound absorbed glass mat design at its
Bristol, Tennessee, plant and a flat plate absorbed glass mat design
at its Columbus, Georgia, plant. At the Bristol plant, Exide would
move new or existing process equipment into an existing 110,000-
square-foot building; the spiral wound battery manufacturing would
require about 50,000 square feet. At the Columbus plant, Exide
would demolish some existing structures and build a 44,000-square-
foot

would be small and well within existing permit limits. Exide has
operated the plant for 15 years.

FINDINGS
59 | P a g e
As far as advertisement is concerned T.V, news papers, shop
displays and shop paintings, play major role in drawing the attention
of the consumers.
Exide, amron and amco are the brands which are dealt by many of
the garage people.

CONCLUSIONS
The expansion of operations at the Exide Technologies facilities
in Bristol, ennessee, and Columbus, Georgia, would take place on
existing company-owned plant sites. The Bristol site occupies 134
acres, and Exide has operated it for about 15 years; the Columbus
site occupies 42 acres and has operated for 46 years.

beyond the site boundaries. The disciplines DOE did not carry
forward include:

impacts to be small. In addition, the potential for reduced emissions
has the potential to result in a net decrease in U.S. carbon dioxide
emissions.
RECOMMENDATIONS
63 | P a g e
2. Provide better after sales services then the competitors, with
out delay after receiving complaints.
3. Letting the stock of batteries in the MASS and other big
garages by providingthem the batteries at discounted prices
will help to increase the sales.
4. More advertisement is needed for increasing the sales.
5. Advertisement in TVs, news papers and shop displays plays
important role indrawing the attention of consumers.
6. Should have a good rapport with garage people apart from
dealers and retailers.
7. Dealers margin and retailers margin should be more then the
margin provided by the competitors so that they can provide
commissions to the mechanics.
8. Take necessary action towards the batteries which are
damaged within the warranty period, without delay.
9. Need to invest more on promotional activities as there is more
potential for automotive batteries.
